Suspected Chelsea Bomber Allegedly Attacked Family In 2014

Ahmad Khan Rahami unleashed his fury on those closest to him ― his family ― long before he allegedly planted a string of bombs in New Jersey and New York.

That’s according to a 2014 police report obtained by the Associated Press. In it, Rahami’s sister, Zobydha Rahami, claimed that her brother threw items at her, punched her in the face, threatened to hit her with a dumbbell, and attacked her mother with a phone charger wire. When another one of her brothers tried to intervene, Rahami stabbed him.

Rahami, a 28-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Afghanistan, was only charged for the stabbing. He spent a month in jail, and a grand jury ultimately declined to indict him. His father told reporters that Rahami was violent toward his family “for no reason.” It was that incident that inspired him to report his son to the FBI.

But that was not the suspected serial bomber’s first encounter with law enforcement. Two years earlier, Rahami was arrested for violating a domestic violence restraining order. It is unknown who the order was intended to protect, as those documents have not been publicly released.

If this pattern sounds familiar, it should. Over the past few years, many men accused of committing atrocious acts of public violence have had a documented history of abusing their families.

A partial list: Omar Mateen, who committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, was accused of beating his former wife. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who planted bombs at the Boston Marathon, was arrested for beating his girlfriend. Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, the man who rammed his truck into a crowd in Nice, France, abused his wife and his mother-in-law.

More recently, the young man accused of opening fire inside a mall in Burlington, Washington, and killing five, had a lengthy history of allegedly abusing his family.

Arcan Cetin, 20, faced at least three domestic violence assault charges involving his stepfather. He was not convicted on any charges. In 2015, a judge told him that he was not to possess a firearm. CBS News reports a formal no-contact order was entered for both of his parents.

Former classmates said Cetin was also known for sexually harassing women. “He would grope women in high school and middle school,” said one student. Another said he often talked about girls and rejection.

While most domestic abusers reserve their violence for the vulnerable people inside their own homes, a rare few go on to commit heinous crimes against others. For example, most mass shootings in the U.S. involve a perpetrator targeting a family member or intimate partner.

And according to one analysis of criminal offenders in Washington State, a felony domestic violence conviction may be the single greatest predictor of future violent crime among men.

Domestic violence perpetrators typically blame their spouse or family members for their own failings, and feel entitled to hurt them, explained Chitra Raghavan, a professor of psychology at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

In contrast, she said, people who commit public acts of violence generally feel a sense of grievance against a group of people, and attribute their personal failures to society as a whole.

So what would make a person go from attacking their family to attacking members of the public?

One theory, Raghavan said, is exposure to jihadist propaganda. Latching onto a justification for violent behavior may give some abusers the permission they need to take out their anger on society, instead of their parents or spouse.

“One possibility for the motivation is to shift the feelings of self-hatred and failure away from the self to society,” she said. “What starts as deeply personal then conveniently becomes ideological.”

While Raghavan said it’s not reasonable to screen domestic abusers for their potential to commit terroristic acts, once a person is on a terrorist watch list, it would be appropriate to investigate their domestic violence history as a potential warning sign.

Life Lesson From The Pan Man

It’s 10 am on a January day that’s colder than what I’m used to. Maybe it’s because of the ocean breeze that’s whipping my hair around my face like free formed streams of ice. It could be that everyone is moving around me. There’s bundled up vacationers briskly walking in front of me on the beach, sandpipers scurrying from the rolling waves, and my hands are gripping the mallets tightly as the pinging sound of my steel drums gets lost in the rushing sounds arounds me. This morning is freeze framed in my soul. It was a different world on the beach that day. The sounds, the movement, the uniqueness of being a street performer when I was 9 years old made an impact on me. It was a humbling impact, not only because when you look out over the ocean and experience a oneness as your own compass but also how insignificant but grand a person can be. Imagine playing two ginormous steel drums alone as a child there while people walk past you – sometimes smiling, usually not. A homeless man next to me carrying a conversation with me during my breaks and his own conversation to himself while I play. I fell for the steel drums that day but also for the lifestyle that it portrayed. A lifestyle of humbleness, freedom, musical sovereignty and at the end when I was breaking down to go home — I realized… after repeating four songs over for three hours — which may be why the homeless man was talking to himself, is I needed a teacher.

Kelvin Hart was ancient. That was my first thought when I saw this wiry Trinidad man. When reading “To Hell with Dying” by Alice Walker, the character Mr. Sweet is described as being a “tall thinnish man with thick kinky hair going white.” I could not think of a better description for Kelvin. The second thought going through my head when I met Kelvin was regret. I was regretting learning and as our lesson progressed — I kept on regretting it. Kelvin spoke softly and very quick with a strong Trinidad accent, making him next to impossible to understand. Besides the verbal communication issue was the way he taught music — by ear. I was to memorize the song he played for me. I don’t think I got a single note right during the first lesson and if one was to ask who had more regret at the end of the lesson — we’d both say it was a tossup! The following lessons we learned from each other and as the months went by, I don’t know who looked forward to the lessons more — I’d say it was a tossup! I became his protégé, the student he bragged about with the other steel pan band members from his band, the Pepper Pot. I found out later, they’d practice behind his small white frame home, in a patch of dirt by the carport and in between the practice sessions, the conversations sprinkled with progress of the little protégé. When I gave him a copy of Tiger Beat Magazine that featured Justin Bieber on the cover and a feature article about me, he was ecstatic!

I asked Kelvin a few times about his experiences as a steel drum performer. Like many older people I talked to over the years, the past in not something they wish to dwell on. They don’t want accolades for surviving it and they don’t want a medal for the success they experienced with their achievements. Kelvin talked about his winning the coveted steel drum competitions in Trinadad as a boy like he asked for coffee in the morning: briefly and in a monotone voice. But one day, he added to the time long ago in his homeland, “I won two years and each time I had to run. I was always running with my pans.” If one looked at the pans, they aren’t something you can run easily with besides being large, they are also heavy. Sometimes understanding Kelvin you had to understand what he didn’t say. Kelvin came from Trinidad where one in five people live below the poverty level. Kelvin had to run with his pans so he could keep them from being stolen.
Over the next year, there were many more lessons. Some I was comfortable with and others were difficult. Kelvin was a tough teacher and sometimes I wanted to tell him I was good enough. I wasn’t planning on making a career of steel drum performing. However, the lessons with Kelvin were synonymous with Mitch Albom’s Tuesday with Morrie. If everyone had a Morrie in their life, they would be a more humble person. They would be a more understanding person. They would be just better. By this time, I had plenty of gigs I was doing, I was in most of the local papers at least once, dozens of radio interviews, a few magazines and I was feeling well accomplished in the steel drum world. My street performing had led to starting my own radio show when I was 11 years old and Kelvin was proud. I performed at a rowdy local beach bar called Ocean Deck in Daytona Beach, FL and behind me on the tiny stage was an old picture of Kelvin and his Pepper Pot band. I told Kelvin about it at our next lesson and he just looked down and gave a little laugh. His pride in me kept me going with the lessons. I wanted him to see that his belief in me was justified. That I did it.

2016-09-28-1475070910-9973136-FullSizeRender44.jpg

The holidays are always a busy time and as the 2011 year ended, I had interviews I was doing for my radio show and it was a normally frantic time. I opted not to have the steel drum lessons during the holidays thinking Kelvin probably had some gigs and it was all for the good. My mother received a call on January 8, 2012 and it was Kelvin’s wife. Kelvin had died and would I be able to play at his funeral. The moment of regret tastes acrid in one’s mouth. It freezes the bones. I didn’t know what to say, what to do, who to blame. I wanted to blame Kelvin for dying, me for not having the next lesson, everyone else for giving me a ridiculously busy holiday schedule. I didn’t know what to do and was too scared to want to perform at his funeral but I said yes, because Kelvin would have wanted me to be there. Then we received word the plans had changed for the funeral and I felt cheated for not being about to perform. I felt guilt for not having a lesson, I felt guilt for being selfish over wanting to blame everyone and then guilt for an opportunity that was no longer there. A performance that would have been our last lesson together. Guilt, grief and then never wanting to miss an opportunity like that again with anyone. Maybe that was Kelvin’s last lesson for me after all.

Dustin From ‘Stranger Things’ Speaks Out About His Disability

Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin on “Stranger Things,” has a disability ― and he’s not ashamed of it.

Last week on the British talk show “The Jonathan Ross Show,” he opened up about his cleidocranial dysplasia, a condition he was born with that affects the development of bones and teeth.

In the short clip above you can hear the 14-year-old actor speak frankly about his condition. He tells host Jonathan Ross that he does not have collarbones and still has his baby teeth, which causes him to speak with a lisp.

But he’s totally OK with it.

I just want to raise awareness for it and let people know that it’s not something that you should be afraid of showing.
Gaten Matarazzo

“I just want to raise awareness for it,” he told Ross. “And let people know that it’s not something that you should be afraid of showing.”

Gaten boasts this opinion despite being rejected for acting jobs for two years because of his disability.

“It was always because of my lisp, and me being shorter and having the teeth issue, that was always the reason they couldn’t cast me,” he told the radio show BBC 5 Live. “Because they couldn’t write in a disability into the show because they had already written the script.”

Yet, the Duffer brothers, who created “Stranger Things,” decided to embrace Gaten’s cleidocranial dysplasia and gave the funny and lovable Dustin the same condition.

He told The Daily Beast:

“When they wrote it into the show, I [started] getting a lot of messages and emails online from people who have the condition, saying that it really helps them come out of their shells a little bit.”

This kid really is as sweet as chocolate pudding.

A la perfeccin! Para dominar la mecnica de la escritura (Spanish Edition)

Based on research on the acquisition of writing proficiency in a second language A la perfeccin! concentrates on helping students improve and master the mechanics of writing. In A la perfeccin!, nothing is taken for granted. Students gradually progress from the articulation of sentences to the construction of paragraphs, to the elaboration of coherent essays, papers, critiques, and other academic writing. Often, writing papers in an advanced literature class is a source of frustration for both student and instructor. Students find that they lack the tools to use the language to express ideas in a clear and concise manner. Instructors are forced to spend time correcting the paper for legibility rather than being able to suggest improvements in style and structure. With sections devoted to reviewing grammar, consolidating knowledge to allow for speed, and developing style, A la perfeccin! provides the necessary tools for a student to improve their overall writing. A la perfeccin! can be used in any advanced Spanish Composition and/or Grammar and Stylistics course or in any course designed to improve students’ writing. The exercises in the book and in the workbook additionally take into consideration the vocabulary and content students need to review to succeed in the Praxis Teachers Certification Exam. We Should All Be Outraged By Trump’s Absurdly Racist Pitch To Black Voters

Donald Trump has absolutely no idea how to bridge America’s racial divide.

Trump, who interrupted and insulted his way through his first presidential debate against Hillary Clinton, boldly claimed to have a “good relationship” with African Americans. But when asked by moderator Lester Holt on how he would achieve racial healing during a time that requires it, the Republican nominee responded the only way he seems to know how when it comes to race: by insulting black voters, proposing to double down on crime and wholly ignoring the reality of present-day racial tensions.

During the debate portion on “Race In America,” Holt, who is black, cited how dramatically recent killings of black people by police, and the protests, anger, an distrust that followed, have amplified racial tensions in America.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton acknowledged the everyday role race plays in the country’s housing, education and criminal justice systems. Clinton briefly addressed the shootings in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte, North Carolina and laid out a plan to prevent similar incidents from re-occurring which aims to reduce gun violence, review police practices and help restore trust between communities and the police

Trump’s plan to help bring about racial healing pales in comparison. Instead, the fear-mongering, tough-on-crime nominee proposed that the way to lessen racial tensions between communities and police is “to bring back law and order.

Trump, who ripped a page from the Richard Nixon playbook and declared himself the “law and order candidate” earlier in his campaign, responded to Holt’s question on the protests in a way that not only failed to acknowledge the recent police killings of black people but also disparaged the same minority voters he hopes to win over.

“We need law and order. If we don’t have it, we’re not going to have a country.”
Donald Trump

Trump made only brief remarks on Charlotte, the city where 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott was recently gunned down by police. He made absolutely no mention of Scott or any other victim of police brutality, encouraging harsh policing in the city where his financial investments are apparently more valuable than black lives.

“We need law and order. If we don’t have it, we’re not going to have a country,” Trump said. “And when I look at what’s going on in Charlotte ― a city I love, a city where I have investments ― when I look at what’s going on throughout various parts of our country… we need law and order in our country.”

In a particularly outrageous moment of the night, Trump discussed the use of stop-and-frisk and falsely claimed that the controversial policy, which unfairly targeted black people and Hispanics in New York, helped to bring “the crime rate way down.” That happened after stop-and-frisk was deemed ineffective and ruled unconstitutional in New York, but Trump continues to praise the racist policy.

It is absolutely absurd that Trump’s vague proposals to alleviate issues with policing involve laws that could help to perpetuate the problems within it. It’s essentially a slap in the face to black Americans who have relentlessly protested the racially-targeted practices of police officers.

In a failed attempt to redirect the conversation from police brutality to “black-on-black” crime, Trump quickly pivoted from Charlotte to Chicago (appearing to forget, apparently, that Chicago has its own recent history with police violence). He completely ignored any concerns around police violence to talk about tackling community violence in inner-cities like Chicago, which are independent issues that have absolutely no direct correlation to one another.

Trump went on to make egregious, blanket statements about minority communities by claiming that African Americans and hispanics are “living in hell” in inner-cities where “gangs roam the streets” and illegal immigrants “have guns” and “shoot people.” It goes to show how racist Trump is in this thinking about minority communities and how grim he can get when describing people of color. He was even lambasted by Clinton for painting such a “dire negative picture” of black neighborhoods that, she said, have “a lot that we should be proud of.”

Yes, crime in cities like Chicago is a serious issue but Trump, who thinks black people should vote for him because they have “nothing left to lose,” fell horribly short by avoiding to mention any of the systemic racial issues that play a role both in Chicago and in daily black American life.

Clinton went on to lay out the facts about policing that Trump so casually dismissed. She highlighted how black men are disproportionately targeted by police officers and pushed to eliminate racism from our communities and especially among our criminal justice system.

“It’s just a fact that if you’re a young African-American man ― and you do the same thing as a young white man ― you are more likely to be arrested, charged, convicted, and incarcerated.”

However, it was Trump’s comments on birtherism that stood out as one of the more egregiously insulting remarks he made to black Americans that night.

For five years, Trump has denied that President Barack Obama was born in America. It’s an inherently racist claim and one Trump showed little remorse over when Holt addressed the topic on Monday night. Rather, Trump thinks he did a “great service” in getting Obama to present his birth certificate to the public, which is a reflection of his own smug assessment on denying the legitimacy of the country’s first black president. It all paints yet another example of the blatant disrespect Trump shows towards black Americans.

When asked by Holt if he’d like to apologize to the black community over his earlier comments on birtherism, Trump audaciously said: “I say nothing.” These are the sort of responses that fall in line with the antagonizing, racist rhetoric Trump constantly unleashes and completely unloaded during the debate.

It simply goes to show that even when presented with the opportunity to amend his wrongdoings, Trump willfully continues to make a mockery of minority voters. And, at the end of the day, that’s a reality black Americans can’t be burdened with.

Do We Have The Courage To Prune The Behaviors That Refuse To Die? Can We Cut The Ego Down To Size?

To many of us, fall feels like a new beginning because we associate fall with the start of school and the end of that languorous season summer with its vacations and trips to the beach. But fall can feel like a new beginning for yet another reason — because so many trees and plants shed their leaves, die or become dormant in some way. And that’s really the beginning of the new beginning — when the old begins to die.

For many of us, patterns that we have carried within us, sometimes forever, are beginning to die, but often they don’t die gracefully like the leaves of the old maples. They die fighting. For example, our political system is corrupt. No matter what party you belong to, you can see that corruption is common. But what is that corruption about? It’s about looking out for personal, short-term interest instead of for the highest good of all. It’s about putting our group, family, town, football team, race, religion or nation before the whole, before the all, before the highest good. And while these patterns are destructive and sometimes deadly, they don’t want to surrender and allow us to come together to co-create new ways. Instead, they scream that WE are going to die if we change, rather than that it is the old patterns that are dying so we can live.

It’s not easy for these behaviors to fall away, especially if we are trying to change individually. How can we not stay short-sighted and self-serving when we see others being that way and getting rewarded for it? How can we not fall into the obsession to control when our child goes back to using drugs, even though trying to control doesn’t work, or how can we not regress into patterns of shaming and blaming, when we see injustice? How can we not get into self-protection when we feel we have to defend ourselves against a world which is filled with powerful people who exploit us? How can we equally not get into self-protection when we feel threatened by the desperate and angry people, who have neither the skills nor the opportunities to be seen, acknowledged and cared for, people who may in fact be angry at us? Our many dysfunctional patterns, including aggression, addiction, discouragement, anger, denial and self-centeredness, these old patterns cling to us individually and collectively, refusing to fall, refusing to become the fertilizer for the future that they are meant to be.

Let’s look at ourselves today and see what old patterns are still clinging to us or to our world. And what can we do about them? When a plant has dead leaves or a tree has dead branches, we often clip or prune. Do we have the courage to do the same to ourselves and our society: clip off those parts of us that are killing us or one another, prune the patterns that are blocking us from thriving? Do we have the courage to do this ourselves? And do we have the courage to stand up to convention and demand that we all do this for the sake of our world, our future and our very survival?

The ego has created these patterns which are supposed to protect us but which ultimately destroy us all. Are we ready to take out the tools that will cut the ego down to size?

TheInnerRevolution.Org is reaching out to others so that we may come together to prune the ego. If you are interested in learning how, please contact our Director of Outreach, Helen Hillix, at helen@heinnerrevolution.org.

From Deli To Doctor, Doctor To Deli

“For this we sent them to college!” their great grandmothers holler from their graves as their great grandchildren announce their intentions not to be doctors or lawyers or I-bankers but to open a food truck or a restaurant. “We worked hard to spare you back-breaking work.” Why are millennials pursuing career opportunities like these when more traditional avenues closed to their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents are now open to them? Pin-striped suits and rep ties have gone out of style, while interest in nontraditional careers has grown exponentially among affluent, young college graduates.

With few other career options, no college education, no fancy internships in investment banks and Fortune 500 companies, past generations and new immigrants opened restaurants to make a living. Sweat equity was their “capital” investment, and their drive and hard work opened paths for their descendants. One of our Baby Boomer friends, a prominent ophthalmologist, grew up working in his parents’ deli. This instilled an impressive work ethic along with knowledge of pastrami, tongue, and corned beef. He is part of the generation that wanted to excel academically and pursue prestigious careers closed to his parents despite their intelligence. Respect and affluence followed as he donned a white coat instead of an apron.

These current young entrepreneurs often have a mission. They may want to introduce vegan or vegetarian dining to the American meat and potatoes public. They see their mission as promoting public health, a way to encourage eaters to consume less fat, sugar, glucose. Clover Food Lab, with popular restaurants in Boston and Cambridge, started as a food truck at MIT and serves only vegan and vegetarian food (though they don’t advertise this for fear of turning people off). They still have food trucks. Ayr Muir, a descendant of the naturalist John Muir, is an MIT-trained Material scientist with a degree from Harvard Business School. Following his stint as a high-powered management consultant at McKinsey, he went into food service because of its potential environmental impacts.

2016-09-27-1474987664-6403209-CloverFoodLab.jpeg

“The first Clover outpost was an MIT-based food truck which opened in 2008. Muir originally saw it as an opportunity to try out menu items, but he ended up helping to launch a food-truck trend that swept the nation. Today, the original food truck continues to be one of the chain’s most popular outposts – unsurprising, given that a full quarter of Clover’s customers are either students or people who work at a university, according to their internal surveys.”

His “save the environment” goal has spawned several other innovative chefs.
2016-09-27-1474986064-2268511-MeiMei.jpeg

Another restaurant that started in a truck is Mei Mei’s kitchen in Brookline, near the Boston University (BU) Bridge. Here the food purveyor-physician choices have been reversed. The founders’ mother, a local physician, can be seen dining in the restaurant. She paved the way for her kids to become chef entrepreneurs, realizing their dream. The Mei Mei food truck has been awarded “Boston’s Best Meal on Wheels” by Boston Magazine and “Boston’s Best Food Truck” by the Improper Bostonian.

Here the mission is artistic, painting a delicious menu of Asian-American fusion food using locally grown ingredients.

The food craze is happening nationally too. Real estate agents in Seattle and the Carolinas are using food to lure new buyers since, “Most luxury buyers have a passion for fine foods and wines.”

It isn’t just the prestigious schools in Boston that are spawning restaurant entrepreneurs.
Columbia University, home to Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and President Obama, featured an article on their alumni magazine on food entrepreneurs, including Siggi’s Icelandic yogurt (founded in 2004 by Sigurður Hilmarsson ’04 Business School) and Happy Family organic baby food (founded in 2006 by Shazi Visram ’99 Columbia College, ’04 Business School). Our food tastes have changed. “Twenty years ago we counted fat grams and calories. Now, we scrutinize food labels, calibrate carbs, protein, and healthy fats, and demand ingredients that are vegan, paleo or gluten-free. We want to know if our food is organic, seasonal, and sustainable.”

Maybe all this is due to disillusionment with high falutin’ goals. Money alone doesn’t bring happiness, nor does sitting in board rooms watching PowerPoint presentations. This generation is going back to basics to find meaning in life. Of course Donald Trump loves fast food, whereas Hillary Clinton enjoys dark chocolate and Goldfish crackers.

Maybe tastes have changed because once our basic needs are met we look for more variety, quality, and meaning. After all, we humans still need food: Now reasonably affluent Americans can afford more than just food to sustain us, but food that is nutritious, healthful, and delicious. School cafeterias are increasingly focusing on healthy foods to reach children of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Cookbooks reflect our changing society, especially the role of women as technological advances and feminism liberated women from the kitchen and enabled them to enjoy the larger world. The Schlesinger library at Radcliffe has a huge library of cookbooks. Our mothers’ bible was The Settlement Cookbook, with the subtitle “The Way to a Man’s Heart,” published in 1901 by Lizzie Black Kander of the Ladies Relief Sewing Society in Milwaukee, to support a local settlement house. Joan Nathan, author of Jewish Cooking in America, owns 18 different editions of the book. Her 95-year-old mother was given a copy in 1937 as a wedding gift, and it remains in her kitchen today. “She considers it her Bible.”

2016-09-27-1474987186-5797332-SettlementCookbook.jpg

Now the subtitle of our trusty cookbooks might be, “The Way to a Healthy Heart.” Bill Clinton, who now prays at the altar of veganism, personifies the healthy food trend, with a waistline to prove it.

Little Beauties: A Novel

Little Beauties: A Novel

The lives of three characters — an obsessive-compulsive, a pregnant teenager, and the teen’s unborn child — come together in National Book Award finalist and Pushcart Prize winner Kim Addonizio’s unsparingly funny and transcendent debut novel. Diana McBride, a thirty-four-year-old former child pageant contender, now works in a baby store in Long Beach. Between dealing with a catastrophic haircut, the failure of her marriage, and phone calls from her alcoholic mother, Diana has gone off her OCD medication and is trying to cope via washing and cleaning rituals. When pregnant teenager Jamie Ramirez enters the store, Diana’s already chaotic world is sent spinning. Jamie can’t stand being pregnant. She can’t wait to get on with her normal life and give the baby up for adoption. But her yet-to-be-born daughter, Stella, has a fierce will and a destiny to fulfill. And as the magical plot of Little Beauties unfolds, these three characters’ lives become linked in ever more surprising ways. With a poet’s ear for fresh, evocative language and a deft humor that exposes her characters’ foibles, Addonizio perfectly captures the messiness and unexpected beauty of life.

The U.S. Military is Not a “Disaster”

A running theme in discussions of U.S. military strength in recent years is the notion that the United States is not spending enough on the military, and that as a result the current U.S. military is “in shambles,” or, even worse, “a disaster.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

On the spending front, it is important to remember that the Obama administration has spent more on the military than was spent during the administration of George W. Bush, and that current levels of spending exceed the peak year of the Reagan buildup of the 1980s.

The nearly $ 600 billion per year now devoted to the Pentagon and related agencies is more than the amount spent on their militaries by the next seven largest spenders in the world combined, including two and one-half times what China spends and nine times what Russia spends.

If there is a problem with Pentagon spending, it isn’t that there’s not enough of it. It is that it is being poorly managed and poorly allocated. We don’t need more Pentagon spending. We need more spending discipline.

Despite the fact that the Pentagon wastes tens of billions of dollars per year buying things we don’t need, the U.S. military’s capabilities are unparalleled. As Gen. Paul Selva, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, noted in testimony before Congress earlier this year, “At no time in my career have I been more confident than this instant in saying we have the most powerful military on the face of the planet.”

No other nation has a military with global reach. The United States currently has 10 active aircraft carriers. China and Russia have one each, and neither is as capable as a current generation U.S. carrier. In a speech to the Naval War College early in the Obama administration, then Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said “The United States has the most powerful Navy in the world by far: “The US Navy . . . in terms of tonnage . . . is larger than the next 13 navies combined — and 11 of those 13 navies are U.S. allies or partners . . . The overmatch in terms of capabilities is even greater.”

Gordon Adams has done a good capsule summary of the capabilities of the U.S armed forces:

“the United States has the only truly global military — one that can deploy forces anywhere, fly anywhere, and sail anywhere. Unlike other militaries around the world, it has a truly global network of bases and global logistics, transportation, communications, and intelligence. It has Special Operations forces that, at nearly 70,000 troops deployed in over 80 countries, outnumber the militaries of all but a handful of countries.”

The other line of attack favored by those who seek more money for the Pentagon is to claim that there is a “readiness crisis” due to the caps on Pentagon spending that were imposed by the Budget Control Act of 2011. This a misleading claim.

The truth is, although the caps have kept the Pentagon from buying everything on its wish list, they have still left its budget at historically high levels, as noted above. Congress has moved the caps upward twice, and the Pentagon has used the war budget – which is not subject to the caps – as a slush fund to pay for tens of billions of dollars worth of items that have nothing to do with fighting wars.

To the extent that there is a readiness problem it is because Congress and the Pentagon have been neglecting readiness funds in favor of pet projects that have little or nothing to do with supporting troops in the field.

There is plenty of fat that can be cut at the Pentagon – more than enough to make up for any shortfalls in providing training and appropriate equipment to our troops. High on the list of unnecessary expenditures is the plan to spend $ 1 trillion dollars over the next three decades to build a new generation of nuclear-armed bombers, submarines and missiles when the United States already possesses massive nuclear overkill. Another misguided expenditure is the Pentagon’s use of over 600,000 private contractors, many of whom do work that duplicates that of government employees. And as the Project on Government Oversight has noted, the troubled F-35 aircraft, which is currently projected to be the most expensive weapons program in the history of the Pentagon, may never be ready for combat. The F-35 could be scaled back or replaced with upgraded versions of current aircraft at a savings of tens of billions of dollars in the coming years.

In addition to spending on goods and services we don’t need, the Pentagon is extremely careless in how it spends taxpayer dollars. It is the only major federal agency that cannot pass an audit. This sloppy accounting renders the Department of Defense uniquely vulnerable to waste, fraud, and abuse. The Pentagon routinely overpays for routine spare parts, and despite Congressional criticism, it has not even been able to keep its employees from using their government-issued credit cards to pay for frivolous items like visits to casinos and strip clubs. These expenditures add up. In a report earlier this year I documented $ 33 billion in Pentagon waste generated by 27 separate projects over a multi-year period.

The bottom line is that the United States has the strongest military in the world, and that there are more than enough resources available to keep it that way if the Pentagon and the Congress spend them wisely. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Falling Forward — Winning Success From Failure

I have self-doubt. I have insecurity. I have fear of failure. I have nights when I show up at the arena and I’m like, ‘My back hurts, my feet hurt, my knees hurt. I don’t have it. I just want to chill.’ We all have self-doubt. You don’t deny it, but you also don’t capitulate to it. You embrace it. ~ Kobe Bryant

Patty doesn’t just walk into a room, she takes it over. She stands tall, speaks with confidence and is always well dressed. She is friendly with everyone and remembers each person’s areas of interests and birthday. Is she actually good at her job? No one questioned it; all her colleagues assumed that she must be. Until one day she failed. Her division came in under plan for the year while all the other divisions surpassed plan in both profit and gross sales. Yet in the annual review and promotions process, Patty was one of the two people promoted. Falling forward, that’s Patty.

Do you know of someone like Patty? I worked with Patty early in my career and the lessons she taught me by example have been valuable ever since. Instead of fearing failure, she behaved as if success is hers to claim. She dove into new possibilities, took risks and came out of failure with innovative ideas on how to improve. Here are the key points that I’ve gained from observing her on how to fall forward instead of down:

  1. Be prepared – Patty came to work each day fully mentally and physically ready to shine. Confident, well groomed and happy to engage.
  2. Be interested in others – you can learn from others, help them, have fun and gain a supportive network in the process.
  3. Stretch – Say yes to the new assignment/project and then learn how to do to it. You can only improve if you take on new projects. Seek help and ask questions.
  4. Don’t be afraid to fail – the fear of failure can hold you back from taking the risks that can advance your goals. Not trying is a recipe for guaranteed mediocrity in the long run because you can only advance if you move from where you are now. However there is always a potential for missing the mark, so prepare contingency plans in case they are needed
  5. Admit your mistakes – learn from them and use the insights to help you improve. The sooner you deal with what didn’t go as planned, the faster you can analyze what happened and use the new understanding to leverage the current situation to making things better.

Many people live life based on avoiding making mistakes. They are afraid of falling down, but actually you can fall forward! Patty is a great example of how you can turn seeming flops into winners. Greet each day as another opportunity to grow, improve, and have fun. With a mind open to looking for possibilities for the good, you are already ahead in the game. In this autumn season, also known commonly as the fall season, dare to reach for more. You won’t fall down, you can fall forward!

Personal disclosure: I included some of the highlights of what I learned from Patty into my first book, “How to Use What You’ve Got to Get What You Want”. May you too gain from her shining example.

I’ve come to believe that all my past failures and frustrations were actually laying the foundation for the understandings that have created the new level of living I now enjoy. ~ Tony Robbins

Eliza O’Neill was diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome on July 17, 2013 at the age of 3. Sanfilippo syndrome is a rare disease that is estimated to affect 1 in 70,000 newborns. Sometimes described as “childhood Alzheimer’s,” the disease is characterized by the body’s failure to break down long chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans.

Sanfilippo syndrome is degenerative, causing young children to gradually lose their ability to walk, talk and eat on their own. Seizures and joint stiffness are also common symptoms. Most people with Sanfilippo do not live past their teens.

Desperate to save Eliza from this fate, her parents worked with photographer Benjamin Von Wong to make a video about the little girl and this devastating illness. The emotional video went viral, flooding news outlets and social media feeds.

Since posting that first viral video in 2014, “so much has happened,” Glenn told The Huffington Post.

Between the ages of 4 and 6, Eliza gradually lost her ability to speak. She also experienced decline in her motor skills, as she stopped coloring and using forks and spoons to eat.

“She can’t tell us if she’s hurting and why,” Glenn said. “And as the disease has progressed, it has become hard sometimes to know exactly how much she understands or does not.”

Still, there have been positive developments as well. The family’s Cure Sanfilippo Foundation has raised over $ 3 million to fund research for the disease.

In May 2016, Eliza became the first child in the world to be treated with a one-time intravenous gene therapy clinical trial. The treatment consisted of a single injection into a vein in her hand.

While Eliza will undergo many follow-up tests in the years to come, her family and doctors are simply waiting to see how well the gene therapy is working to alter the course of the disease. Glenn and Cara said they’re optimistic about the future, as this treatment stopped the disease and allowed mice to live normal lifespans in pre-clinical studies.

“Since she is the first human in the world to receive this type of treatment, no one knows if it will work, how well, how long it will take, etc,” Glenn said. “We do see a new light in her eyes and a new connection with us, in just a few months since treatment. We thought this was lost.”

The dad explained that Eliza seems to be engaging more in activities and doing things she hasn’t done in a long time.

“The quiet moments at night when I read her a book or sing her a song, she smiles and looks deep into my eyes,” he said. “I believe she is understanding. These small moments give us HOPE. We used to take these things for granted, but not anymore.”

Meanwhile, Eliza attends a full-time autism therapy program, which uses applied behavior analysis (ABA) to help her hopefully regain the skills she has lost. She also receives speech and occupational therapy.

Since undergoing the gene therapy treatment, Eliza clearly “wants to learn more,” Glenn said. “She is trying to sound out words again, and getting better and better at it. She is in there, and she’s now doing it all with a smile on her face. We believe we are witnessing a miracle,” he added.

Early reports indicate that the treatment may be having a positive effect. Two other children have been treated since Eliza, and several more are scheduled to follow.

The road to receiving this treatment was a difficult one.

In May 2014, Glenn and Cara decided to isolate their family to protect Eliza from a particular virus which, if she caught it, would disqualify her from the clinical trial. Eliza and her older brother Beckham were homeschooled, groceries were delivered (and thoroughly wiped down) and interactions with others occurred only through Skype. Though they thought their period of isolation would be 100 days, it ended up lasting 726 days.

Beckham, who is 9 years old, went to live with his grandparents for a few months as the isolation dragged on, but now that the family is no longer sequestered, he’s back in school and fitting in socially again, Glenn said.

“Having a sister with Sanfiippo is not easy,” the dad said. “He isn’t able to have a normal and playing relationship, even though he tries. He likes to try to read to her and get her to say words, and is so proud when he is able to.”

Glenn added that Eliza often requires more attention in order to be safe and cared for, and Beckham “has been wonderfully understanding” about the situation.

“Beckham can’t wait for the medicine to ‘work even better’ as he says, so they can play more together,” said the dad.

Although Eliza has received this potentially life-saving treatment, Glenn and Cara are hardly stopping their fight. “Many Sanfilippo families have joined us in our efforts and raise funds so that more children might have a chance at life,” Glenn told HuffPost.

The O’Neills emphasized that they raised funds for the gene therapy research and treatment with no way of knowing whether or not Eliza would be included in the clinical trial. “We fund and accelerate research to human clinical trials, and then it is up to the doctors to create criteria and choose the children that will participate,” Glenn explained.

He added, “But we knew if we didn’t help get the trial up and running, and fast, she would have no chance because the disease is rapidly degenerative. We chose to tell our very personal ‘Saving Eliza’ story for the greater cause for all children.”

This is why the family decided to make another video ― to help other kids with Sanfilippo.

In addition to telling Eliza’s “miracle” story, Glenn said they wanted to share a sobering truth: If they don’t act fast to raise money for more research, the many Sanfilippo kids who weren’t selected for this limited clinical trial will lose even more of their abilities and eventually die.

“That is the reality,” the dad said. “It is agony on parents. These kids are on a timeline, and there is life-saving urgency.”

Glenn and Cara said it’s hard to describe the emotional transition from watching their daughter fade away with each passing moment to feeling renewed hope that the disease may be stopping through treatment.

“It is the most powerful and uplifting feeling in the world,” explained Glenn

Glenn and Cara believe their daughter’s viral story made an impression on many families, even those not affected by Sanfilippo.

“I think Eliza has touched the world by giving parents additional perspective into how much of a gift it is to have healthy children ― perspective to remember to enjoy the moments, take nothing for granted, and fiercely love,” said Glenn, adding, “Parents would go to the ends of the earth for their kids, and parents can relate with our cause and the fight we are in.”

The O’Neills said they’re grateful to the millions of people around the world who listened to Eliza’s story, shared it and donated, often multiple times.

“The amazing and compassionate support from strangers from around the world has carried us through during the hardest of days,” Glenn said. “They have truly made a difference and now afforded my child and others a chance at life.”

Now that Eliza has become, in many ways, the face of Sanfilippo syndrome, her parents hope she can help her fellow Sanfilippo kids get a similar chance at life.

“We hope people realize how many more children can be saved, with action,” Glenn explained. “Supporters have seen through our story that miracles can and are happening. We have to press forward with even more urgency for Eliza’s Sanfilippo friends.”

The dad added, “At the end of our original ‘Saving Eliza’ video, Eliza said ‘Please share.’ Well, she can no longer say those words at this time, so we’d ask for her, that those moved by her story please donate and share to save children’s lives.”

Referencing a quote from Cara’s mom in the first video, Glenn said. “Hope is a nice word, but we need action. It is the action that makes the difference.”

A Taste of Progress: Food at International and World Exhibitions in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

A Taste of Progress: Food at International and World Exhibitions in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

World exhibitions have been widely acknowledged as important sources for understanding the development of the modern consumer and urbanized society, yet whilst the function and purpose of architecture at these major events has been well-studied, the place of food has received very little attention. Food played a crucial part in the lived experience of the exhibitions: for visitors, who could acquaint themselves with the latest food innovations, exotic cuisines and ‘traditional’ dishes; for officials attending lavish banquets; for the manufacturers who displayed their new culinary products; and for scientists who met to discuss the latest technologies in food hygiene. Food stood as a powerful semiotic device for communicating and maintaining conceptions of identity, history, traditions and progress, of inclusion and exclusion, making it a valuable tool for researching the construction of national or corporate sentiments. Combining recent developments in food studies and the history of major international exhibitions, this volume provides a refreshing alternative view of these international and intercultural spectacles.

A Spoiled Brat Named Little Donnie Thwimp: The Importance Of Sound Symbolism

As strange as it may sound, the sound symbolism of a name has become an unnamed central issue in the 2016 presidential campaign. As a cognitive linguist, my job is to study the issue and, at the very least, to name it.

Perhaps the best-known discussion of naming occurs in Juliet’s soliloquy in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Here is Juliet, proclaiming that all that divides her from Romeo are their family names.

Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title.

Shakespeare here was writing about love, not profit or politics. Donald Trump’s father changed the family name from Drumpf to Trump. It was a name change worth billions. Herr Drumpf understood the power of naming, as has his son, who renames his rivals: Lyin’ Ted, Little Mario, Crooked Hillary.

Trump has made his fortune by marketing and selling his name. He slaps his name in large bold letters on Trump Tower, Trump Airlines, Trump Steaks, and so on. He has even managed to get his name on property he doesn’t own!

< http://politicschatter.com/politics-talk/slideshow/trump-owns-properties-name/> The name Trump is his brand, his product; he sells his name. When he seeks financial backing for a project, he insists that he be paid very well for the use of his name, even if his name is used just to get investors or bank loans. The condition is that he gets paid for the use of his name, even if the project fails and goes into bankruptcy. Time and again, his companies have gone bankrupt; but though others — builders, employees, investors — lose money, Trump is always paid for the use of his name.

What it is about the name “Trump” that sells, and would it sell if it were changed a bit?

Sound Symbolism

There is a subfield of cognitive linguistics that studies sound symbolism, where there is pattern in a language linking sound structure of a group of words to what is called an “embodied conceptual schema” that characterizes a significant part of word meaning, though by no means all word meaning. To give you a feel for sound symbolism, consider words ending in -ip: drip, clip, snip, rip, dip, sip, whip. There is a pattern here: the meanings all involve a short path to a sudden stop. This is what the mouth is doing; there is short path of breath to a sudden stop. The pattern is called an “image schema.” It provides structure to a meaning, without filling out the whole meaning. Moreover, the pattern does not cover all -ip words or all short paths to a sudden stop. It is simply a pattern that fits a significant number of important cases.

The -ip sound is called a rhyme, which occurs at the end of a syllable. Sound symbolism also occurs at the beginning, or “onset”, of a syllable. Consider words beginning in cl-: clap, cling, clasp, clump, clench, cleat, cloak, closed, club, cluster, … . The pattern involves things coming together: either the part of the hand in clench, the two parts of a clasp, the two hands as in clap, the members of a club, the trees or plants in a clump or cluster, the cloak what comers together with the shoulders it is attached to. When the blades of scissors come together in a short path to a sudden stop, there is a cl+ip, as in clip. English has dozens of such sound-symbolic patterns, as observed by Richard Rhodes and John Lawler in their classic paper “Athematic Metaphor” (Chicago Linguistics Society, 1981; .

TR- Words

This brings us to tr- words. When you say tr- in English, your tongue starts out with the tip just in back of the teeth and pressed along the top of the mouth to pronounce an r. Then a vowel follows and the mouth is forcefully opened, moving with the vowel in one direction or another. In short, there is forceful press and a forceful release. Not surprisingly, English has a very common sound-symbolic pattern in which the initial cluster, the onset tr- expresses Force, with a forceful tension followed by a forceful motion.

There are many kinds of forces involved in many kinds of forceful actions and experiences. As a result the tr- words span a wide range of meanings in which an initial force is part of the meaning of the word. Start with tr+ip, trip — a verb expressing a force resulting in a short path to a sudden end: you can trip on something that exerts force on you sending you moving to a quick sudden stop, or you can trip someone else sending them moving to a quick sudden stop.

Then there is try, in which someone exerts force to achieve some purpose. Trap can be a forceful action by one or more people to retain someone, or can refer to a mechanism that exerts force to restrain someone. A truss holds an injured body part in place by force. And to trim or truncate something is to forcefully cut it shorter. To forcefully start something is to trigger it. A tremor is a forceful movement of the earth, as in an earth quake. A trench is a long hole dug with force. A trumpet is a musical instrument that takes force to play and as a result of the force makes a loud sound.

Then there are machines that exert force to move things: a truck, a tractor, a train, a trolley, a tram, and forms of transit. Motion across some area usually requires force to carry out the notion. Trans– means across and in the right word, it can express forceful motion across or forceful change, as in transmit, transfer, transpose, and transfigure.

The forceful motion of a train moves along a track, while heavy steps on wet ground can leave tracks. The forceful motion of people over a landscape creates a trail that others can move along. Forceful motion on a landscape over a distance can be a trek. Forceful walking is treading, with the past tense trod. And the tires of a wheeled vehicle need tread to forcefully grip the road. To forcefully step repeatedly on something to destroy it is to trample it. And an object to jump up and down on forcefully and repeatedly for the sake of exercise or play is a trampoline. The successful use of force to achieve something significant is a triumph. A problem that can be solved by forceful action is tractable. A trend is an event sequence understood as exerting a force in itself to continue motion in the same direction in the future.

Some forceful events exert harm, for example, a trauma, a tragedy. The very thought of them can exert the force to make you tremble. A trial is an event you undergo that can seriously harm you and that takes forceful action or resilience on your part to avoid that harm. A tribulation is a harmful effect you undergo when you experience a trying experience.

You can sense the force of the tr- sound in a word if you try to rename an object or experience. There is a reason why a tractor is not called a yiss! Or why a trauma or a tragedy is not called a wug. In studying sound symbolism, you need a sense of your own reaction to the sound of word and what would happen under a renaming.

-UMP Words

Now we move to the sound symbolism of –ump words. In the pronunciation of –ump, the u is a schwa, a mid-vowel, neither high nor low, front nor back, a giving up of breath, as in “uh.” The nasal m is pronounced by opening the nasal tract allowing air to move up and around the nasal tract and then down to the mouth to stop at p. There is release of low energy “uh” tracing a rise in the nasal tract m and then a lowering and stopping of the breath at p.

It is a sound pattern that expresses entities of low or no energy having a three-dimensional shape that can be traced over time as a rise and then a fall. We can see this sound symbolism in bump, lump, hump, rump, plump, and stump, which in each case has a 3-D shape that can be traced by a rise and then a fall. A clump (say, of trees) is a group brought together (cl-) with that shape. A pump is an instrument for blowing up stretchable objects into that shape. A jump in place is a rise and then fall. When you dump something, it goes downward (d-) and what is dumped has the — ump shape. A frump is a low energy person with such an appearance. A grump is someone who makes a growling sound and has that appearance. To slump is to take on such a shape, and a baseball player goes into a slump when his hitting becomes ineffective and his batting average falls. A chump is an ineffective person who is a “fall guy” in interacting with an aggressive effective person who can take advantage of him. And a thump is the sound made by a low energy fall against a solid resonant object.

This bring us to tr+umpTrump as a name. It has a causal structure: a causal force (the tr-) followed by a person or object (the -ump) that the force acts on and affects. The person or object either already is an -ump or is made into an -ump by the force. As a person’s name, tr- followed by -ump symbolizes a person who acts with force on existing chumps or creates them by his exertion of force. In short, it names someone who has the power to take advantage of others. In business, it names a person who can profit by taking advantage of others. Similarly, in the game of bridge, trump is a card of a suit that will always win the trick, that is, it has power over a competing card of lesser strength.

That is why he can sell his name in a business deal, market his name by plastering it on everything he owns — the Trump Tower, his airplane, his steaks, wine, suits, ties, with signs in bold letters. He even has managed to get his name on buildings he does NOT own < http://politicschatter.com/politics-talk/slideshow/trump-owns-properties-name/>.
Tr+ump is a perfect last name for a presidential candidate who offers himself as the ultimate authority, able to turn others into chumps in politics. It is the perfect name for the ultimate Strict Father and authoritarian ruler — the ultimate authoritarian who makes those ruled into chumps.

The Renaming

The point here is that Shakespeare was wrong. A rose by any other name need not smell just as sweet. Tr+ump is a great name if you want to vote for a powerful person who can take advantage of others — make chumps out of people you don’t like: liberals, Mexicans, Muslims, the Chinese, blacks and people who can’t take care of themselves, namely, the poor.

If you are among the tens of millions of Americans who wholly or mostly idealize strict father morality, someone named TR+UMP sounds like your man.

But what if he didn’t have that name? Would you be voting just for the name, not the real person?

It has been observed that he often acts like a spoiled child. In fact, he was a spoiled child. When his father tried to teach him personal responsibility by making him take on a paper route in Manhattan, he kept out the rain by getting the family chauffer to drive him around in the family Cadillac on his paper route!

In financing building, he got loans on his father’s collateral housing empire that would not rent to African-Americans or Latinos. He got tax breaks through his father’s influence with city officials, who depended on his father’s political donations. When things don’t go his way, he just makes up lies and depends on then power of his name to get him through.

And he renames is opponents: Little Marco, Lyin’ Ted, Crooked Hillary.

Suppose he were renamed.

If there is any a putative strict father cannot be, it is childish and spoiled — and weak. Some children at a young age have trouble pronouncing T+R. The r turns to w after a t, as in Twump, and the t may weaken to th, as in Thwump. Suppose we change the u to i, to indicate smallness. That would be Thwimp: Little Donnie Thwimp. The -ie on Donnie is called a “diminutive,” it makes someone or something sound smaller. Thwimpie is a possibility.

Imagine a national renaming campaign, starting now. Imagine those with photoshop skills might change the name on the image of his tower to Twimp Towie. Changing the letter on his plane to Twimp, and have it falling toward the ocean. Photoshop campaign signs to Thwimp/Punts. Imagine running Twitter campaigns with #Thwimpie.

The fact is that Little Donnie Thwimp is something a strict father authoritarian cannot be named because it is a weak childish name!

Little Donnie dreams of being the ultimate strongman, like Putin, and to cover his weakness, he tells lies, he tells BIG LIES, REALLY BIG LIES! But the bigger the lie, the greater the weakness. He is weak on foreign policy. He is weak on economics. He is especially weak on history. He is really weak on his taxes and has to hide them. And he is dangerously weak on the facts about the use of nuclear weapons!

Twimpie’s weakness is revealed in his exaggerations: What he likes is “terrific.” What he dislikes is a “disaster.” All or nothing. Weak on careful, subtle reason.

Would voters who want a strong authoritarian vote for someone named Thwimp? Or Thwimpie? Or Little Donnie?

Do the Thwimp polls. Let’s find out.

Democratic candidates need not engage in the renaming. Let the ordinary people who understand the lies and the weaknesses do the renaming on social media.

But isn’t this just fun and whimsical? Shouldn’t everyone be focused on fear — the fear that he might just get elected. The fear is real and justified. But the problem with justified fear-mongering is that it gives power to the person you’re afraid of. By all means discuss why the fear is justified. But take the power away. Rename and rebrand: Twimpie.

If people vote for someone on the basis of the sound symbolism of his name, change the name. Let them try to say they want to elect a Thwimp with a straight face.

The Point

What’s the point of a Thwimpie campaign? The candidate is not going to change his name, and reporters are not going to do serious investigative reporting using only the candidate’s new name.
The point is simple: The President of the United States and the Leader of the Free World should not be chosen on the basis of the sound symbolism of his name.

The sound symbolism is unconscious. This paper brings it to consciousness. Offering an alternative with very different sound symbolism is crucial if Americans are to become aware that the sound of the name can be working on them unconsciously and against their better judgment.

Sound symbolism is an issue in this presidential campaign — as weird as that sounds. The issue can only be brought up with a discussion of what the sound symbolism is and what a very different sound symbolism might be.

The issue may sound laughable. But it is quite serious. It needs to be brought to attention, and to be reported on.

And it should raise ratings. Because while being serious news, sound symbolism is not just informative; it is fun. Fun in the news raises ratings.

Fear also sells in the media. Shouldn’t you be afraid that someone has a chance of being elected president based on the sound of his name?

This is a real fear, as well as fun.

#Thwimpie

What The Buddha Would Say To Mr. Trump

If a bull goes straight when the herd is crossing a road, then they will all go straight because he leads the way. The same among people. If the one who is thought to be the highest lives in goodness, the others do so too. The whole realm lives happily if the ruler lives rightly. The Buddha

This is true when the leader is virtuous and honest. But Donald Trump is leading his followers into a quagmire and they don’t even know it. He is using the most destructive of qualities–greed, hatred and delusion–to gain power and prestige. This is the behavior of an egomaniac who thrives at others’ expense.

We are not presuming to know what the Buddha might say to Mr. Trump, just as we don’t presume to know what might be said to any of us. But the Buddha clearly taught about the dangers of greed, hatred and ignorance, what he called the three poisons, that Trump displays frequently. Where greed grabs our desires, hatred uses fear to incite insecurity and then blames everyone else, while ignorance clouds our vision.

The three fires of greed, hatred and ignorance destroy the mind from which they are born. The Buddha

The mind is everything. What you think you become. The Buddha

Greed has many relatives, such as ambition, self-centeredness, pride, grasping and clinging, giving rise to dissatisfaction, irritation, frustration and anger. The craving to have and possess stops us from giving; it generates a fear of not having. Donald Trump personifies greed in his desperate desire to win at all costs, no matter how he does it. For instance, he insists on flying aboard his luxury jet, rather than a more practical airplane, at a cost to taxpayers of millions of dollars.

Hate is destructive, indiscriminate, like a snake it can rise up out of nowhere and attack. It is most seen in prejudice, whether against different races, political beliefs, or sexual preferences. When we are fixed in the belief that we are right, then anything that questions or threatens that belief becomes the enemy and must be eliminated. Hatred’s many bedfellows include criticism, sarcasm, misogyny, and racism. Need we say more?

The Buddha pointed out that such hatred becomes our own worst enemy for no matter how much we try to annihilate the hated one, the hate remains inside us, slowly destroying and eating away at our own happiness.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; while you are the one who gets burned. The Buddha

Abhorrence towards others is based on the belief that we are all separate from each other, that I am more important than you. This breaks friendships and families, while creating self-righteousness and arrogance. Prejudice closes our heart and shuts down our sensitivity.

The moment that you think of doing harm to someone, that thought harms you first. Unless you hate yourself, you can’t hate others. If you love others, that means that you create the feeling of love within you first, and then you offer the love to others. Your thoughts pass through your entire system, and are expressed through your mouth and through your hands and actions. Without thinking, you cannot speak or act. So the harmful thought, from its very origin, spoils your system. In other words, you can’t hit anyone else without striking yourself. Sri Swami Satchidananda

Where hatred closes our heart, delusion makes us believe there is a permanent, separate and fixed ‘me’ so that we take ourselves very seriously. It belies a lack of awareness, especially of anything outside ourselves. This is the ignorance of our essential connectedness with all others.

The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear. What seeds will you grow there? The Buddha

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

The Debates Won’t Change The Minds Of Trump Or Clinton Backers

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton reportedly has spent countless hours sequestered with a team of advisors, analysts, and debate coaches preparing for her round of debates with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. They’re throwing every kind of question and attack point that they can think of at her to get ready to parry either Trump’s bombastic attacks or pirouette and deal with a kinder, gentler, calmer and more focused Trump. The point is not just to one-up Trump, and score more debate brownie points, but to dial her poll numbers up a notch over Trump. Presidential candidates see debates as their chance to really shine before millions and show that they, not the other guy, or in this case woman, is really not in their league as a fit match for the Oval Office.

The blunt reality is that it doesn’t make much difference what Trump or Clinton have to say about each other and policy issues. It won’t change the fact that presidential debates make good theater but not much more. Studies back that up and show that a majority of voters feel they don’t learn much from the debates, and are disappointed at that. Even the minority of respondents who say they learn something from the debates insist that they don’t influence their decision on who to vote for. Party affiliation, long-standing political preferences, personal beliefs and values largely determine that.

Richard Nixon, more than any other presidential candidate in modern times, found that out the hard way. The widely held belief is that Nixon’s fidgety, wooden style, and unkempt appearance in his first 1960 televised debate with a relaxed, tanned, youthful looking John F. Kennedy did him in.

In their two follow-up debates, though, a much better composed and relaxed Nixon came off as having as good, if not better, command of the issues than Kennedy. His perceived debate loss to Kennedy didn’t finish him. Yet, it sealed the belief that an afternoon shadow, mussed hair, a malapropism, and a gaffe during a debate will make or break presidents and their challengers. That’s a myth. In 1976, President Ford’s bid for a full elected term supposedly went down the tubes when he blurted out that Poland wasn’t under Soviet domination during his debate with Democratic challenger Jimmy Carter. Presumably, that gaffe shot to pieces Ford’s credibility on vital foreign policy issues. But Ford could not shake Republican blame for the Watergate scandal, and his pardon of Nixon. This more than his debate miscue did him in.

In 1980, it was thought that Republican challenger Ronald Reagan’s carefully scripted and rehearsed “There you go again” retort to Jimmy Carter when he accused him of wanting to slash Medicare so befuddled Carter that his re-election bid came unglued. But by the time of their debate, Carter’s presidency was badly tattered. Voters blamed him for high inflation, unemployment, waves of business failures, and the bungled Iran hostage rescue mission.

In 1988, Democratic presidential contender Michael Dukakis’ automaton-like answer in his debate with Vice President Bush Sr. to the loaded question about the death penalty supposedly blew his presidential bid. But Bush Sr. carried Reagan’s imprimatur. The Reagan administration gave the appearance of fostering an economic boom, had stunning foreign policy successes marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union, and stratospheric public approval ratings.

In his debate with Democratic challenger Bill Clinton in 1992, President Bush Sr. repeatedly glanced at his watch and seemed impatient to get the debate over. That allegedly soured voters on him. That did not torpedo his re-election bid. Bush’s inability to resuscitate the economy and urban racial turmoil badly hurt him. What really nailed him was the insurgent campaign of Reform Party presidential candidate Ross Perot. He siphoned off thousands of potential Republican votes.

In 2000, George W. Bush came off as personable, witty, and conversational in his debate with Democrat Al Gore. By contrast Gore was perceived as stiff, arrogant, and condescending. Yet, many experts believed that despite Gore’s personality glitches, he still beat Bush on the issues. Gore went on to win the popular vote. It took the Florida vote debacle and a Supreme Court ruling to settle the matter for Bush.

In the 2008 and 2012 debates between Obama and respectively McCain and Romney, the debates were pretty much seen as a draw. But the draw had almost nothing to do with any perceived erudition of either of the candidates on the issues. The voters that liked Obama liked him just as much or at least no less after the debates than before. The same held true for McCain and Romney.

Trump versus Clinton will be good for the ratings, good TV watching for legions of viewers, and a good chance for Clinton and Trump’s backers to cheer wildly for their guy or woman when they score a hit on a point. But after the cheers and telecast end they’ll still be just as likely to vote for Clinton or Trump as they were before the two took center stage.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

The Mood Cure: Take Charge of Your Emotions in 24 Hours Using Food and Supplements

This is the food and nutritional answer to mood disorders – Patrick Holford, the founder of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition, praised it as ‘working better than any anti-depressant’. Written by one of the most successful names in nutrient therapy, The Mood Cure shows you how you can permanently lift dark moods and emotions in less than 24 hours. Most mood problems are caused by biochemical imbalances, many of which don’t need Prozac or other drugs to cure them. Such drugs are often liberally prescribed despite the risk of side effects. Julia Ross has been working with natural nutritional solutions at her clinic in California for over 15 years – and with dramatic results. She has developed an extremely successful nutritional plan using specific foods and supplements that can lift dark moods and emotions in less than 24 hours. It works by restoring the body’s natural chemical balance, thereby relieving mood-related symptoms, such as depression, PMS, stress, low self-esteem, irritability or SAD. Assess your mood profile with a four-part questionnaire Identify and understand your underlying chemical imbalance Devise a targeted plan of supplements, good mood foods and menus according to what your body needs Address hormone imbalances, food intolerances, allergies, insomnia and addiction Lift the dark clouds of depression and anxiety in as little as 24 hours Now, with The Mood Cure, you can blast the blues forever.

Elite ‘Bundlers’ Raise More Than $113 Million For Hillary Clinton

More than 1,100 elite moneymen and women have collectively raised more than $ 113 million for Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid, according to an analysis by the Center for Public Integrity of information released this week by her campaign.

The list, updated monthly, includes more than 260 new bundlers who had not previously been disclosed by the campaign. These newly revealed fundraisers and donors include lawmakers, entertainment icons and titans of industry.

Among them: actor Ben Affleck, former Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester, former U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia of Florida, filmmakerGeorge Lucas, Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer, TV producer Seth MacFarlane, Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, U.S. Rep. Brad Sherman of California, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, fashion designer Vera Wang and attorney James Zimmerman, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

A “bundler” is someone who collects checks from friends or associates and gives them to the campaign. They are often rewarded for their efforts with prize positions in the administration of the candidate they support. That is, if the candidate wins.

Also new on the list are U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, and his wife, Cynthia Blumenthal; Timothy Boyle, president and CEO of Columbia Sportswear, and his wife, Mary Boyle; Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings and his wife, Patricia Quillin; and actor Tobey Maguire and his wife,Jennifer Meyer.

By law, only registered lobbyists who bundle campaign contributions must be revealed — along with the exact amount they raise.

Individuals, or couples, who raise or donate at least $ 100,000 toward Clinton’s presidential bid have been dubbed “Hillblazers” by her campaign, which is voluntarily releasing their names but not the exact amounts they have raised.

Clinton’s Republican rival, Donald Trump, has not voluntarily revealed any information about his top fundraisers.

Former President George W. Bush and U.S. Sen.John McCain of Arizona both disclosed the names of their top presidential campaign fundraisers, while 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did not.

Under both Democratic and Republican presidents, campaign bundlers have often landed perks after their preferred candidate is elected, including plum ambassadorships, government contracts and access to exclusive White House meetings and social events.

As the Center for Public Integrity previously reported, dozens of top fundraisers for President Barack Obama were nominated for ambassador posts — often in western European capitals such as London, Paris and Stockholm.

Obama used broad disclosure categories when revealing details about how much his bundlers had raised. The largest category was simply “more than $ 500,000,” although sometimes fundraisers collected millions of dollars.

For instance, businessman Matthew Barzun — who served as Obama’s first ambassador to Sweden and now serves as ambassador to the United Kingdom — apparently raised more than $ 3 million for Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee, according to information revealed earlier this month as part of the hack into DNC emails.

And investment banker Azita Raji, whom Obama nominated to be ambassador to Sweden in 2014, raised more than $ 4.7 million for Obama’s two presidential bids, according to documents obtained by the New York Times in 2012.

Unlike Obama, Clinton is revealing only one category for her Hillblazers, making it impossible to readily ascertain which ones are in a class above the rest.

Additionally, as of July, the Clinton campaign has been including on its list people who contribute or raise at least $ 100,000 for the Hillary Victory Fund or Hillary Action Fund. These two joint fundraising committees benefit Clinton’s presidential campaign as well as the DNC and state-level Democratic parties.

Donors can give far more to a joint fundraising committee than they could to a candidate’s campaign committee.

The Hillary Victory Fund alone benefits 38 state Democratic parties, in addition to the DNC and Clinton’s campaign — meaning an individual donor could currently cut a single check to it for nearly $ 420,000 and immediately make the list of Hillblazers.

As of June 30, elite fundraisers had helped Clinton raise at least $ 49.6 million — or at least 18 percent of the $ 275 million her campaign committee had raised at that time.

Bundlers were also responsible for about one-fourth of the first $ 47.5 million Clinton’s presidential campaign raised last year.

Staring Down The Epidemic Of Loneliness

I know the look when I see it. Eyes downcast, body either rigidly still or desperately fidgeting, discomfort clear. Some deep shame is working its way to the surface. Buried discomfort is forming into words. Sometimes the words are barely audible. Sometimes they’re shouted. I sit across from the shame, offering steady eye contact for the client who is ready to meet it. When given the opportunity, I meet the shame with acceptance.

As a licensed mental health counselor, it is my job to share space with individuals and hear their stories. Often these stories have shame woven into them. By “shame,” I’m referring to painful feelings of humiliation or distress, often turned towards the self (as opposed to feelings of guilt, which often relate more directly to behavior towards others). When we give voice to difficult things, as Brené Brown mentions in her TED talk, and when we meet them with empathy, we take away the power of shame.

But when shame festers without a voice, it can be isolating. And isolation, in turn, can lead to loneliness and feelings of worthlessness… which can continue to perpetuate shame. Loneliness and shame walk around, bullying our sense of human connection into hiding. In reading a recent New York Times article on the “epidemic of loneliness,” we learn that loneliness is an underlying cause of many chronic conditions, both physical and mental. How did we let this epidemic develop? Where have the points of connection gone, and what happened to the voices that help us to challenge shame?

It’s my opinion that we are isolated by our lack of ability to have difficult conversations. We are restricting our speech: we sometimes misuse trigger warnings as an acceptable form of avoidance; we question if an individual should be allowed to kneel in quiet protest during the national anthem at an athletic event; our social media and internet ads are tailored to match our own views, narrowing our perspective; we wonder if we can voice an opinion at a political rally without being met with physical violence. We are limiting our ability to connect with others in a respectful way. We are isolating ourselves from the person, and many times even disparaging the person, who holds a differing opinion from our own. And we are silencing our own voices out of fear of vulnerability and out of fear of retribution. We are, in effect, building the walls of loneliness and shame ourselves.

In counseling sessions, I find myself offering that steady eye contact to the clients ready to receive it. Along with an army of other therapists and helping professionals, I’m challenging shame with acceptance and staring down the epidemic of loneliness. Counseling provides an opportunity for the walls of isolation to disintegrate, for genuine connection and respect to occur in the midst of difficult conversations. It’s my hope to facilitate stronger human connections both inside the office and out, so that clients may share their shame resilience and foster connection in their own relationships.

I have hope for healing in my work and in our world. Together we can heal some of the divisions between people and within people that have allowed this epidemic of loneliness to grow. We need counseling for the safe space and genuine connection it provides. We need each other, to normalize difficult conversations with respect. We need ourselves, to find our own voices and activate our own ears. We will find connection in our disagreements as well as our shared interests, and we may well help to spread an epidemic of connection.

Distinguished critic at The New Yorker since 1998, Peter Schjeldahl has been described as America’s most influential writer on art. Blessed with an unerring eye, he tackles a myriad of subjects with wit, poetry, and perspicacity, examining and questioning the art before him while reveling in the power and beauty of language. His writing springs from a desire to be understood by all readers, and a determination to help them engage with art of every kind.Covering subjects drawn from a broad canvas of the history of art from ancient Greece, Mexico, and Byzantium, through Raphael, Rubens, and Rembrandt, to Bruce Nauman, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and John Currin the writings collected here seek out with precision and economy the essence of the individual artist or work under discussion, but they never lose sight of the bigger picture: What is beauty? What does it mean to be an American artist? What can the art we produce and admire tell us about ourselves? With an imaginative introduction twenty questions, each one posed to Schjeldahl by a different artist or writer this collection will appeal to anyone who considers the experience of art, and of writing on art, an invitation to a voyage.Coverage includes: large-scale exhibitions at leading institutions around the world shows at private galleries profiles of prominent members of the art world personal accounts of time spent with artists the influences of museum spaces on our experience of art

Colin Kaepernick’s Protest Makes The Cover Of Time Magazine

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is featured on the latest issue of Time magazine for his ongoing protest of police violence and racial inequality.

The magazine announced Thursday that an image of Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem will be the cover of the Oct. 3 issue, indicating how the NFL star’s protest has permeated national culture.

The Time cover story, written by Sean Gregory, explores how Kaepernick’s protests have spread across the country. The issue also features several commentary pieces on the protests.

Kaepernick’s protest first drew attention during a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, during which he refused to stand during the anthem. After the game, the quarterback explained his motivations to NFL.com’s Steve Wyche.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” he said. “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Kaepernick has continued to protest the anthem, and many other athletes have since joined him in calling attention to the injustices faced by black Americans. However, Kaepernick has also faced fierce backlash ― including some death threats ― for his demonstration.

“If something like that were to happen, you’ve proved my point,” he said of the threats earlier this week. “It’ll be loud and clear why it happened.”

Since Kaepernick began protesting, at least 15 black people have been killed by police.

Piece Of Mind vs. Peace Of Mind

I have learned that more people love to talk than listen. Between the pundits, politicians, experts and social posters on the internet, everyone’s talking and expressing an opinion. But how many are really tuned in and listening?

These past few weeks I turned down the “noise” to address some personal matters that meant more to me than what people thought and said. I found it rather peaceful. No anxiety from the news and less time wasted scrolling through umpteen posts. I was able to have real conversations with people in person and by phone rather than just abrupt texts.

For years I was a better talker than listener. After my breast cancer diagnosis I was forced to listen to my doctors and to my own body that had been telling me for years to take it easier. I learned to ask questions and listen more intently. I also learned (slowly) to be quiet.

A skilled communicator knows how to express herself verbally and with purpose and how to listen with intent and sincerity. She doesn’t talk over someone or around them or hog the conversation. She knows how to punctuate a statement to get her point across and how to pause to elicit an effective response. Anyone can be a better listener. It just takes being quiet and focusing on the person in front of you or the situation around you with thought and without distraction. Many people practice their speaking skills, but it’s just as important to practice your listening skills.

Listening is not just about what you hear around you. It’s also listening to your inner voice. And it’s “listening” to someone’s body language and how he or she is expressing him/herself by remaining silent. Much can be heard without anyone saying a word if you are perceptive.

Being a good speaker makes people listen to you. Being a good listener puts people at ease.

It’s far better to give someone peace of mind rather than a piece of your mind.

Five steps to be a better listener:

  1. Disconnect from distractions around such as computers, iPhones, people
  2. Practice deep breathing techniques to help you concentrate and look the person speaking to you in the eyes
  3. Ask questions
  4. Repeat what he/she is saying to reinforce your concentration
  5. Count to 5 or 10 before interjecting your opinion into the conversation and avoid interrupting

The Spot-On Way Chris Pratt Handles Arguments With Wife Anna Faris

When Chris Pratt isn’t blowing up the box office fighting dinosaurs, guarding the galaxy or dating in space, he may or may not be taking lessons on how to be a dream husband to actress Anna Faris.

He can actually French braid Faris’ hair. He moonlights as the stunt dummy in his wife’s wrestling lessons. And then there’s this spot-on advice about how to deal with that late-night argument:

“Sometimes you got [sic] to go to bed mad,” he says in the Entertainment Tonight video below. “But at least just touch toes and say, yeah, I know. I know. We’ll deal with it later. I need to get some sleep.”

It’s as if he took the words right out of an expert’s mouth.

Hashing out your problems and clearing the air can strengthen relationships, Amanda Deverich, a Williamsburg, Virginia-based marriage and family therapist previously told The Huffington Post. But she added: “Never going to bed angry could elevate a fight and reduce the ability for a couple to resolve the issue.”

You’ll probably be better equipped to discuss your problems after a good night’s sleep, she said.

That’s because being sleep deprived can make you more likely to get emotional ― and less likely to respond in a controlled, appropriate way. Studies show the brain’s emotional centers are actually more reactive when we’re sleep deprived.

Other research suggests being sleep deprived interferes with the brain’s decision-making processes, inhibits our ability to focus and pay attention, and actually makes fights among couples worse.

We’ll go with Pratt’s take on that classic “don’t go to bed mad” advice: “I think that’s garbage,” the 37-year-old actor said.

Federal Reserve Maintains Key Interest Rate In Another Nod To Slow Recovery

WASHINGTON ― The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it will leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged, likely sparing consumers and businesses an increase in borrowing costs for another few months.

The central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee kept the target federal funds rate — or the interest rate banks charge one another for overnight lending — at a range of 0.25 percent to 0.5 percent.

The federal funds rate is the benchmark for short-term borrowing rates throughout the economy, including auto loans and some housing loans.

Maintaining the current target federal funds rate almost certainly ensures that the cost of borrowing for consumers and businesses will remain low.

The decision reflects the central bank’s trepidation about the pace of economic growth, seven years after the Great Recession officially ended.

The economy grew at a disappointing pace in the first half of this year, increasing in size by about 1 percent. Recent job growth has been steady, but too sporadic to stem the historically high share of workers who have given up looking for work or settled for part-time employment.

The Fed typically raises its benchmark rate to prevent excessive inflation by cooling off the economy. But due to an inadequate job market and slow wage growth, core inflation, which excludes the volatile prices of food and energy, is still well under the Fed’s 2-percent target.

And even if Fed officials would not say as much, many Fed watchers point out that the imminent presidential election may have affected the Fed’s decision not to raise the key rate. The next Fed meeting when an interest rate hike will likely be on the table is in December.

“You do not want to do anything to change the political game, especially in an election as contentious as this one, and especially when there is a candidate who questions the Fed’s integrity and independence,” said Nela Richardson, chief economist of Redfin, an online real estate company.

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has accused Fed Chair Janet Yellen of keeping interest rates low to bolster President Barack Obama’s legacy. (Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, condemned Trump’s remarks, saying it is inappropriate for presidents or presidential candidates to comment on Fed decisions.)

I don’t think there is a single person who predicted before the recession that we would end up with consistently low rates.
Dan Alpert, Westwood Capital

The Fed’s decision was not a surprise to most analysts and investors. But the lingering impact of the deep recession has defied all expectation.

“I don’t think there is a single person who predicted before the recession that we would end up with consistently low rates,” said Dan Alpert, a fellow at the liberal Century Foundation and founder of the investment bank Westwood Capital.

Those low rates are the Fed’s response to an economic recovery that’s been slow and still isn’t robust enough to restore pre-recession job market health.

Many of the headline economic figures ― such as the 4.9 percent unemployment rate and record streak of consecutive monthly job creation ― paint a decidedly rosy economic picture. But those statistics obscure the fact that many workers have moved into jobs with lower pay or fewer hours, and still others have dropped out of the workforce.

An alternative measure of employment, the prime-age employment-to-population ratio, accounts for those who have stopped looking for work, and excludes workers under 24 and over 55 who may be out of work voluntarily.

That ratio has improved consistently throughout the current recovery. As of August, however, 77.7 percent of Americans ages 25 to 54 had a job, which is still lower than the percentage who were employed at any one time in the two business cycles prior to the recent recession.

Commentators celebrated the news that median household income jumped 5.2 percent from 2014 to 2015, but it still has not reached its pre-recession peak, let alone its all-time high in 1999.

And the gap between the wages of black and white workers, which narrows when tighter labor markets make it harder to discriminate, has remained steady or grown in recent years.

As a result of these job market weaknesses, consumer-driven businesses have performed inconsistently. The value of the S&P Retail Select Industry Index, a basket of major retail company stocks, has gone down about 5 percent from this same point last year.

The industry-wide trend is more or less consistent with the experience of Hobby Works, a privately-owned hobby retail chain with four locations in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Hobby Works CEO Mike Brey told The Huffington Post in December that if sales growth continued, he planned to hire more people. Instead, sluggish sales have forced him to cut back on workers’ hours.

“There has not been a solid, steady improvement,” Brey said. “Things have been getting better in fits and starts.”

Things have been getting better in fits and starts.
Mike Brey, HobbyWorks

For Ron Nelsen, CEO of Pioneer Overhead Door, a garage door company in Las Vegas, the business climate is more favorable.

Nelsen, who employs five people including himself, lost two workers who went elsewhere for higher pay. One of them went to work for a competitor in the garage door industry, which Nelsen said is booming.

After making a profit in two of the past three years, Nelsen said he can weather an increase in interest rates on his business loans that might result from a hike in the federal funds rate. The biggest threat to his business is now competition, which “is the way it should be,” he said.

When the Fed raised the benchmark rate in December for the first and only time since December 2008, Yellen cited the desire to avoid having to increase it “abruptly” if inflation were to take off suddenly.

But there is another reason that Fed officials are eager to “normalize,” or raise, the key rate as soon as the economy permits it. A higher federal funds rate would give the central bank more ammunition to stimulate the economy when the next recession rolls around.

There has been greater pressure on the Fed not to interrupt the economic recovery, however, because Congress has refused to enact fiscal policies that would stimulate the economy, either through tax cuts or public spending, like infrastructure investment. That is why the central bank, like its counterparts in other developed nations, have earned the nickname “the only game in town.”

“Governments in the developed world ― especially in the U.S. and Europe ― are not doing what they need to do in order to spur growth in their economies,” Alpert concluded. “When the history of this period is written, that will be the theme of it.”

Learn Mindfulness: Practice 6 — Mindfulness Of Sounds

2016-09-07-1473253789-9852272-TCPBookCover.png

Let go of your mind and then be mindful. Close your ears and listen!
Rumi

INVITATION:

In my morning meditation I am sometimes joined by Ty (a large labrador) who tries all his tricks to get my attention.

I close my eyes, he nuzzles my ears. I centre myself, he licks my face. I focus on my breath, he rams a toy in my hand. I ignore him, he sits squarely on my lap.

Now sometimes I acquiesce and we play together on the floor. In those moments I try to be fully present with him and the game becomes something of a meditation itself.

Other times, he gives up his nuzzling and sits quietly at my side. We then both journey inward, he to sleep, and me into meditation.

Ty has taught me that an authentic mindfulness practice cannot be overly rigid and must include space for the spontaneous and the unexpected.

MINDFUL TIP:

In this practice, listen to the sounds around you and pay vivid attention, as if you were hearing birdsong for the very first time.

PRACTICE:

Begin by finding a comfortable posture and by bringing your attention to the breath. Take a few moments to let yourself arrive and allow the breath to draw you gently into internal awareness. Allow the gaze to soften, the eyes to close.

1) Wait.

2) Listen.

3) What can you hear?

4) Silently name three specific sounds: e.g.

The hum of electrical equipment

The sounds of traffic

Distant birdsong

5) Now bring your focus to a single sound. Pay full attention to it. Describe it silently to yourself using five single words. If listening to the ocean your words might be:

Wave, Crash, Smooth, Wash, Sweep.

6) Take five breaths here and fully explore the sound.

7) If the mind wanders, gently bring it back to the sound by finding something new about it. Take five further breaths here as you listen closely.

8) Next, repeat instructions 5-7 for your second and third sounds.

9) Return to wakefulness in your own way.

Record your experience and your chosen sounds and words in your Mindfulness Journal.

If practising with others, take turns sharing your discoveries.

This practice is an extract from 100 Mindfulness Meditations: The Ultimate Collection of Inspiring Daily Practices by Neil Seligman published by Conscious House and available on Amazon priced £12.99.

10 Mindfulness Meditations is an album of audio meditations to accompany the book and is now available on iTunes priced £7.99

Neil Seligman is the Founder of The Conscious Professional, home of Corporate Mindfulness, Resilience and Wellbeing Solutions.

11 Latinos Nail The Beauty And Pride Of Hispanic Heritage

The Latino community is incredibly diverse, especially when considering it’s made up of a variety of races and nationalities. But celebrating our differences doesn’t mean we can’t also celebrate what binds us together.

With that in mind we asked HuffPost Latino Voices readers on Instagram to tell us what makes them proud to be Hispanic or Latinx, and they responded with beautiful and thoughtful messages of pride and love for their culture.

Here are just 11 Latinos on what makes them proud of their Hispanic heritage.

“This was a part of my morning conversation with my 8-year-old as we walked to school. I am proud of my culture & traditions being able to share and enhance them through out the years through generations to come as our families grow bigger. #Honduras #Punta ” ― @eda_minerva5

“[Being Hispanic] means flavor….we have this fire and aspirations to be more in life…to break barriers and set no limits …” ― @kasperalvarado30

“Being Latina is not one specific thing, it’s everything. That’s what makes Latinos and Hispanics special.” ― @g_love1975

“I’m proud to be Latina because I get to celebrate my roots. My ancestors. My vibrant, colorful and beautiful cultura. ❤️ #latinxpride” ― @stefnay21

”There are so many things that make me proud to be Latina. 1. The sense of family and respect from even members you are just meeting for the first time. 2. The sazón, lol, nothing taste as good as Hispanic food (no offence [sic] to other cultures). 3. La música” ― @yennyflores

“What makes me proud is my curly hair, tan skin, accent, beautiful culture filled with music and food. Being Latinx is being a part of a collective struggle that we all fight and rise above to become a multicultural powerhouse that kicks ass! ” ― @cugatron
