Kamala Harris: ‘A Good-Paying Job Is A Woman’s Issue’

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) spoke to the crowd Saturday at the Women’s March on Washington, emphasizing that issues like the economy, climate change and national security are women’s issues.

“We all know the truth: If you are a woman trying to raise a family, you know that a good-paying job is a woman’s issue,” she said.

Harris was one of several senators who spoke at the rally. Even more lawmakers showed up to march or showed their solidarity with the demonstrators.

“We know that it is right for this nation to prioritize women’s issues,” Harris said.

9 Things Passionate People Do Differently

2017-01-19-1484866370-6450458-9ThingsPassionatePeopleDoDifferentlyHP.jpeg

Do you have enough passion in your life? Passion is the difference between playing the piano and being a pianist; it’s who you are, not just what you do. Passion makes you leap out of bed in the morning, eager to start your day.

Dr. Robert Vallerand at the University of Quebec has studied passion more than anyone, and he asserts that passion is self-defining. According to Vallerand, “Passion is a strong inclination towards a self-defining activity that people love, that they consider important, and in which they devote significant amounts of time and energy.”

“Passion is the genesis of genius.” – Galileo

It’s important to note that passion doesn’t require expertise–although there is a correlation, it’s not a given. Vallerand and two other researchers studied 187 musicians and found that those who focused on perfecting their performance–what Vallerand calls “mastery–developed a higher level of expertise than those who focused on merely being better than other musicians. If passion defines you, it makes sense that your personal best will be about you and no one else.

So what does passion look and feel like? A great way to understand passion is to consider what makes passionate people different from everybody else.

1. Passionate people are obsessed.
Put simply, passionate people are obsessed with their muse, and I don’t mean that in an unhealthy OCD sort of way. I’m talking about a positive, healthy obsession, the kind that inspired the quote, “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” No matter what else is going on, their thoughts keep returning to their passion. Not because they feel burdened and pressured by it, but because they’re just so dang excited about it. They’re obsessed with their muse because it inspires them and makes them happy.

2. They don’t waste time. You won’t find passionate people wandering around a park all afternoon playing Pokemon Go. They don’t have time to be bothered with things that don’t matter or things that just kill time. They devote every minute available to their passion, and it’s not a sacrifice, because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

3. They’re optimistic. Passionate people are always focused on what can be rather than what is. They’re always chasing their next goal with the unwavering belief that they’ll achieve it. You know how it feels when you’re looking forward to a really special event? Passionate people feel like that every day.

4. They’re early risers.
Passionate people are far too eager to dive into their days to sleep in. It’s not that they don’t like to sleep; they’d just much rather be pursuing their passion. When the rooster crows, their minds are flooded with ideas and excitement for the day ahead.

5. They’re willing to take big risks.
How much you want something is reflected in how much you’re willing to risk. Nobody is going to lay it all on the line for something they’re only mildly interested in. Passionate people, on the other hand, are willing to risk it all.

6. They only have one speed–full tilt.
Passionate people don’t do anything half-heartedly. If they’re going, they’re going full tilt until they cross the finish line or crash. If they’re relaxed and still, they’re relaxed and still. There’s no in between.

7. They talk about their passions all the time.
Again, we’re talking about people whose passions are inseparable from who they are, and you couldn’t form much of a relationship with them if they couldn’t be real about who they are, right? It’s not that they don’t understand that you don’t share their obsession; they just can’t help themselves. If they acted differently, they’d be playing a role rather than being authentic.

8. They’re highly excitable.
You know those people who probably wouldn’t get excited if an alien spaceship landed in their front yard? Yeah, that’s not how passionate people operate. It’s not that they’re never calm, or even bored. It’s just that it takes less to get them excited, so they get excited more frequently and stay excited longer. One theory is that they devote their energy to just one or two things, so they make more progress, and that momentum fuels their excitement.

9. They’re all about their work.
Passionate people don’t worry about work/life balance. Their work is who they are, and there’s no separating the two. It’s what they breathe, live, and eat, so there’s no such thing as leaving it at the office. Asking them to do that is tantamount to asking them to deny who they are. And they’re OK with that because there’s nothing else they’d rather be doing.

Bringing It All Together

Now that you know what separates passionate people from everybody else, do you think you have enough passion in your life?

Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

The Women Who Are Running To Protest Trump Are Tapping Into History

In the wake of President Donald Trump’s electoral victory, Alison Désir, the founder of a community running organization in New York City called Harlem Run, turned her frustration into political action.

Désir’s remedy: a four-woman, 240-mile relay, beginning in Harlem, New York City, on Jan. 16 and ending in Washington, D.C., on the day of Trump’s inauguration. The race was designed to raise money and awareness for Planned Parenthood in honor of women. As of Jan. 20, the (Four Women) Run For ALL Women GoFundMe page had raised more than $ 89,000 ― more than twice their goal ― to give women access to cancer screenings and preventive care, even if Planned Parenthood is defunded this year.

Though Four Women are running specifically in opposition to Trump, they are participating in a legacy of people who run in protest or with advocacy in mind.

Protest and advocacy runs range from sponsored marathons to singular, public displays of support, such as Terry Fox’s famous 143-day marathon for cancer research or the recent 2,000-mile relay run from North Dakota to Washington, D.C. to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Désir’s activist relay is part of a larger tradition of running as a form of protest. Women in particular have a history of using long-distance running to call attention to their fight for equality. In fact, just the act of running while female used to be protest enough.

When Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb’s 1966 Boston Marathon entry was rejected by the Boston Athletic Association because women were neither allowed to participate, nor “physiologically able” to compete, she ignored her denial letter.

Instead, she dressed in her brother’s clothing, hid her hair under a hooded sweatshirt, and joined the race without a bib.

Gibb would go on to prove her detractors at the Boston Athletic Association wrong. She finished in the top third of the pack.

“Last week a tidy-looking and pretty 23-year-old blonde [had] a performance that should do much to phase out the old-fashioned notion that a female is too frail for distance running,” Sports Illustrated wrote at the time.

Her protest run also inspired other women to participate, most memorably at that time 20-year-old Kathy Switzer, who officially entered the Boston marathon under the non-gender specific name “K.V. Switzer” the following year. Remarkable though her physical achievement was, race director Jock Semple tried to tackle Switzer and toss her from the race for entering under false pretenses (as seen in the photo above snapped during the assault). As Switzer writes on her website:

A big man, a huge man, with bared teeth was set to pounce, and before I could react he grabbed my shoulder and flung me back, screaming, “Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!” Then he swiped down my front, trying to rip off my bib number, just as I leapt backward from him.

The resulting photos transformed Switzer into the face of women’s running and cemented her status as a feminist role model for generations of women.

Six women in New York City built on that activist legacy. When the gun went off at the start of the New York City Marathon in 1972, the women sat down at the starting line and held up signs protesting the Amateur Athletic Union, which required female runners to participate in a “separate but equal” marathon and start the race 10 minutes before the male runners, or on a different starting line.

A photo of the sit-in ran in the New York Times the following Monday.

“It made a huge difference because it happened in New York. After that, the A.A.U. allowed women to run with men,” Nina Kuscsik, one of the protesters, told the Times in 2011. In 1972, Kuscsik became the first woman to officially win the Boston Marathon.

As for Désir, she and the women of (Four Women) Run For ALL Women are carrying what Désir calls the “baton of hope and health” into Washington Friday, then joining the Women’s March on Saturday, in honor of the rights of women everywhere.

In doing so, they’re building on the legacies of Gibb, Switzer and Kucsik.

“There will be four of us running, but we’ll be running for all of us,” Désir wrote on her GoFundMe page.

Chinese Death Rituals in Singapore

Chinese Death Rituals in Singapore

Through a cultural analysis of the symbols of death – flesh, blood, bones, souls, time numbers, food and money – Chinese Death Rituals in Singapore throws light upon the Chinese perception of death and how they cope with its eventuality. In the seeming mass of religious rituals and beliefs, it suggests that there is an underlying logic to the rituals. This in turn leads Kiong to examine the interrelationship between death and the socioeconomic value system of China as a whole.

‘Carnage’ Is The Top Dictionary Search On Trump’s Inauguration Day

A word cloud of Donald Trump’s inaugural address would likely feature phrases like “the people” and “unite.”

The subtext of his speech is another story. Trump’s promise to put “America first,” for example, is a fraught one. Historically, the phrase has been used by Nazi sympathizers. And his avowal to protect the interests of the police is brimming with racist undercurrents

While the address ostensibly rings of promise and change, the words that were most searched on dictionary sites are alarmingly opposite in tone.

According to Dictionary.com, the top look-ups during the speech were “carnage,” “radical” and “pugnacious.” On Merriam Webster, “carnage” saw a spike in searches, too.

Merriam Webster defines “carnage” as “the flesh of slain animals or humans.” Dictionary.com defines it as “the slaughter of a great number of people, as in battle; butchery; massacre.”

In the past year, both sites have kept close tabs on what users searched for during political events. During election season, “glass ceiling,” “trumpery,” “demagogue” and “cavalier” all saw an increase in look-ups.

With “carnage,” the connotation of searches on these sites has gone from wary to flat-out bleak.

Ten Simple and Unexpected Ways to Boost Happiness

What are some small ways to boost happiness in everyday life? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Raj Raghunathan, Professor of marketing and happiness expert at UT Austin, on Quora:

I once surveyed my students to make a list of three small things that make them feel happy after watching this video. Here’s the Top Ten list from that survey:

Note that not all of them will work equally well for you, so you need to figure out which ones work best:

1. Engage in vigorous physical activity.

The next time you need a mood-boost, try this out: go for a long run or play a game of basketball. Now, what counts as a long run for you may be a mere walk in the park for me (it’s more likely to be the reverse), but the point is that the activity needs to be vigorous enough get your heart pumping and your mind distracted from your negative ruminations. If you are like most people, you are unlikely to want to get off your butt if you are feeling down. But, as the Nike slogan says, “Just Do It!” Here’s a fact to get you going: you are guaranteed to feel better after a workout than you felt before it.

2. Hang out with friends.

When we feel down, we typically don’t want to interact with others. This is partly because we don’t want others to see our negative side, but it’s mostly because we don’t think that hanging out with others is really going to help us feel better. I’m not sure where this intuition comes from, but I can tell you that it is wrong: our mood reliably improves after we socialize, especially if the people with whom we socialize are happy and likeable. Similar to how it’s important to overcome the reluctance to exercise, it’s important to overcome the pessimism we feel about the effectiveness of socializing when feeling down.

If you are wondering where and with whom to socialize, just call one of the “favorites” on your smart phone and make a plan to meet. Tell them about what is troubling you to get you started–even a short chat with a close-friend can significantly improve your mood.

3. Consume a moderate amount of alcohol.

I know, I know, I shouldn’t be encouraging people to drink, but what to do? It turns out that when we desperately need a happiness quick-fix, consuming a moderate amount of alcohol can be effective. The key here is to consume just enough to feel a little relaxed. The very process by which alcohol lowers inhibitions can also lower the tendency to worry. In other words, alcohol can temporarily take your mind off things that are causing you to feel negative and thus, can be useful in situations in which our mind is on a “negativity overdrive.” Needless to say, it is important to consume only a moderate amount of alcohol. If you are one of those who can’t stop after two, don’t try this at home or elsewhere!

4. Dress to kill.

As I mentioned in an earlier article, human beings are highly social creatures, which means that we worry a lot about what others think of us. When we believe that others view us positively, we feel good, and when we believe that they view us negatively, we feel bad. So, one way to make yourself feel good is to wear your best clothes and perfume (or cologne, as the case may be) and venture out to your local park or mall. We you look and smell good, or think that you do, you are likely to believe that others view you positively and this will make you feel good.

5. Revisit old (and positive) memories.

Reliving the “good old times” can be a surprisingly effective mood-booster. I say “surprising” because many of us, especially the young among us, rarely engage in reliving fond memories. Curiously, it seems that the more our life has become virtual, the less we are likely to revisit the past. My parents, for example, regularly spend time recalling pleasant past memories, and also routinely pore over the “family album” to relive past memories. Our existence in the virtual world, e.g., on social media websites, should, if anything, allow us to revisit our past even more effectively, given that many of our cherished memories and experiences are merely a “click away”.

A note of caution, however, if you are looking to the Internet to revisit the past: stay away from those who make you feel inferior. That is, stay away from people who are into the game of “keeping up with the joneses”–you know, the ones who frequently post pictures from their vacation in Spain, or engage in name-dropping. Findings show that such “friends” bring you down.

6. Watch a funny or touching video.

Some people prefer funny videos and others prefer heart-warming ones. Regardless, findings show is that even a short exposure to a positive video can significantly boost happiness. (There’s a reason why one of the most popular ways to manipulate mood in experiments is to have participants watch a video.) Here are links to two funny and two touching videos. (Note: the last one is relatively long, at about 15 minutes, but it is well worth it!)

The Duck Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=…

Heart-warming videos:

7. Talk to an older relative.

It’s a bit of a pity that, in many “new” cultures (like the US), the elderly aren’t as respected as they are older cultures (like China or India). Think about it: as you grow older, you get physically weak and mentally less nimble. The one saving grace could have been that you gain in respect. Without it, growing old seems to have no positives. No wonder the US is so “youth crazy”!

As findings on hyperopia show, the elderly do deserve our respect because they have “been there, done that.” They thus have many valuable lessons to share. In particular, no one can put things in perspective like the elderly can. Talking to them will help you discern the important from the merely urgent and will also help you not sweat the small stuff.

8. Tick something off your “to do” list.

Have you ever written down something on your things to do list just so that you can have the pleasure of scratching it out? Well, turns out you are not alone. Findings show that people derive an “efficacy boost” by accomplishing goals and this can, in turn, make them feel good. If you don’t have a things to do list or can’t think of something to write on it to scratch off, don’t worry. Just do something simple and easy, like depositing a check or washing a cup, and you’ll be on your way to feeling good.

9. Do a small act of kindness.

Perhaps the most powerful determinant of how we feel is the story we tell ourselves about who we are. The more we believe that we are efficacious and successful, the better we feel–which is why tip #8 (ticking something off your list) works. Another story you can tell yourself is that a large-hearted, generous person. One way to convince yourself of this story is to act like a large-hearted and generous person. This doesn’t mean that you break your bank to serve someone; all you need to do is to perform a small act of kindness such as, rescuing a kitten from a tree, or giving left-over food to a homeless person. Even merely smiling or saying “good morning!” to someone can pick your mood up.

10. Venture into nature.

Most urbanites don’t recognize it, but human beings are biophiles, that is, we love being out in nature. I take my MBA students on a two day retreat each year to a place out in the boonies. We hike up a hill and swim in the river and do various other “nature-oriented” things. Before going on the trip, most of my students are skeptical that being out in nature is going to do anything good, but many come away making a pledge that they will get out more in nature in the future. (I’m not sure if they actually make good on their pledge, but the pledge is good enough for me.) Turns out you don’t need to go on a two day retreat to reap the benefits of being out in nature: even a short hike or a picnic in a park can help you feel good.

New Genetic Discovery May Explain Why Some People With Crohn’s Disease Suffer More

More than half a million people in the U.S. suffer from Crohn’s disease, according to recent estimates, but their experiences with the chronic illness can diverge dramatically ― and new research changes the thinking on why the disease affects people differently.

“Some patients can experience pretty mild disease with relatively little disruption to their lives while others have a really torrid time with severe symptoms and recurrent flare-ups,” said James Lee, a gastroenterologist at University of Cambridge and author of a new genetic analysis of people with Crohn’s.

Indeed, some people may not notice symptoms for years after diagnosis, and others with the disease require courses of aggressive immunosuppressant medications and multiple surgeries, as well as time off from work or disability leave

While the cause of Crohn’s is not totally clear, researchers have established that the presence of certain genes ― more than 170 genes fall into this category ― along with the presence of some types of gut bacteria, are linked to a person’s risk of developing the disease. Typically, the more of these 170-plus Crohn’s “risk” genes a person has, the more likely they are to develop Crohn’s.

And until now, experts had assumed that people with particularly severe Crohn’s disease likely carried even more of these genes. But Lee and a team of researchers have identified a completely different set of genetic markers that explain severity: Four genes ― previously not known to be related to Crohn’s ― that appear to determine how severe a case of Crohn’s will get.

Tracking The Genes That Contribute To Crohn’s

The researchers analyzed whole genomes of 2,734 individuals with Crohn’s, identifying four genes that influenced how severe a person’s symptoms were, but did not play a role in that person’s overall risk of developing Crohn’s in the first place.

What’s more, none of the 170-plus genes previously linked to Crohn’s risk seemed to affect the severity of the prognoses, counter to what had been the medical consensus, Lee said.

And the four genes newly connected to Crohn’s were ones other research had previously found play a role in determining the severity of other chronic conditions, like arthritis and other autoimmune diseases (though they are not linked to the risk of developing those illnesses either).

That link to other diseases suggests that if scientists are able to design drugs that work against the specific genetic pathways identified in this study, such therapies may be effective on a range of illnesses, not just Crohn’s, Lee said.

The Future Of Genetic Therapy

A bulk of Crohn’s research over the past 10 years has focused on how the disease develops rather than how the symptoms manifest.

“From a patient’s (and doctor’s) perspective, the most important questions [at the point of treatment] are not related to how the disease developed, but rather to what the disease will do over the coming months and years,” Lee said via email.

When it comes to treating patients with Crohn’s, doctors currently start by prescribing strong immunosuppressive drugs to help keep the disease in check. But if those don’t work, some patients will require surgery to remove parts of the damaged intestine ― and some patients go on to have these surgeries multiple times.

We can now focus on developing drugs that actually target relevant pathways ― which should provide more effective therapies.
James Lee, a gastroenterologist at University of Cambridge

“By identifying the genes that are involved in determining outcomes in Crohn’s disease, we can now focus on developing drugs that actually target relevant pathways ― which should provide more effective therapies,” Lee explained.

Such new drugs are still likely a long way off, he added. The next step is taking a closer look at the four newly identified genes to better understand them and then repurpose existing drugs (or design brand-new ones) to specifically target the parts of those genes that cause Crohn’s to flare up. And once scientists have an idea of what drugs might work, they would need to first be tested in the lab, then in animal models (if possible) and then in multiple phases of clinical trials in people.

But for the doctors and scientists actually investigating how to better help people with Crohn’s disease, Lee said: “This work represents a major step forward.”

The Religion of Thinness

The Religion of Thinness

With so many women approaching their diets, body image, and pursuit of a slender figure with slavish devotion, The Religion of Thinness is a timely addition to the discussion of our cultural obsession with weight loss. At the heart of this obsession is the belief that in order to be happy, one must be slim, and the attendant myths, rituals, images, and moral codes can leave some women with severe emotional damage. Idealized images in the media inspire devotees of this “religion” to experience guilt for behaviors that are biologically normal and necessary, and Lelwica offers two ways to combat this dangerous cultural message. Advising readers to look hard at the societal cues that cause them to obsess about their weight, and to remain mindful about their actions and needs, this book will not only help stop the cycle of guilt and shame associated with food, it will help readers to grow and accept their bodies as they are.

Muslim Helplines Have Been Flooded With Calls Ahead Of Inauguration

Two telephone helplines that offer counseling and support to Muslims in North America were flooded with calls during and after the U.S. presidential election, according to NBC News.

The Canada-based organizations, Naseeha Muslim Youth Helpline and NISA Helpline, say there’s been an uptick in calls from American Muslims, some of whom are worried about their future under the administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Leaders at both Naseeha and NISA expect this upward trend to continue after his inauguration on Friday.

Islamophobic rhetoric was a core part of Trump’s campaign. In the past, he’s floated the idea of banning Muslims from entering the country and even been open to the idea of registering American Muslims on a national database. He’s now surrounded himself with advisors who harbor prejudiced views of Islam.

All of that has resulted in anxious calls to her organization, according to NISA helpline director Tanweer Ebrahim. NISA specifically provides free, confidential telephone counseling for Muslim women. In 2015, it reportedly received 3,579 calls. That number increased to about 4,500 in 2016. In particular, Ebrahim says she saw a 3 to 4 percent bump in calls after the election.

“We have mothers fearing for the treatment of their children in school. And overall, they’re worried for the future of their children with a Trump presidency,” Ebrahim told NBC.

Naseeha’s founder, Yaseen Poonah, said that calls to the youth hotline increased from 4,000 in 2015 to 16,000 in 2016. Many of those calls reportedly went unanswered because the organization is short-staffed ― a problem Poonah is attempting to fix by recruiting and training new volunteers.

Poonah told The Star that the boost in call numbers could be a result of better word of mouth, advertising and success on Google search. But he also tied the uptick in calls to the U.S. election. Along with calling about issues that affect young people of all religions ― like depression and bullying ― it’s also becoming more common for Naseeha to receive calls about discrimination.

“Youth are struggling with the sentiment that they don’t belong and that is manifesting itself in unhealthy behaviors,” he told The Star. “Admittedly, we are a little concerned about what will happen after Inauguration Day.”

Ibrahim Hooper, National Communications Director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, told The Huffington Post that he wasn’t surprised that many of the calls were coming from American Muslims, whom he said have been feeling “stress and strain and apprehension” in the weeks leading up to the inauguration.

“This just says we need to do more here in the U.S. to deal with these issues,” Hooper said. “Very often, we get so caught up in protecting civil rights and dealing with social justice issues, that people can fall through the cracks with their personal concerns.”

Dr. Ben Herzig, a Massachusetts-based clinical psychologist, has often worked with Muslim clients. In an article for The Islamic Monthly, he described how some of his clients have reacted to the election results with “sadness, fear, disappointment, anger and nervousness.”

While Islamophobia has never been a patient’s primary complaint, Herzig believes anti-Muslim political rhetoric has had a negative impact on his patients’ mental health.

“American Muslims are fearful of policies that might target them under the incoming administration. The outcome of the election has generally exacerbated issues like depression and anxiety for American Muslims who had been suffering from them prior to the election,” Herzig told HuffPost in an email.

But despite these fears about life under a Trump administration, Herzig said that another narrative is also emerging within the community ―a story of increasing civic engagement and resilience.

“For Muslims with depression, anxiety and other challenges, the presidential election does not need to reinforce a personal narrative of victimhood or aloneness, but it also undeniably reflects the fact that, for nearly half of their fellow voting citizens, Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric was not disqualifying,” Herzig wrote. “My response as a psychologist involves validating that pain and being realistic about the obstacles ahead, but also emphasizing the idea that fear and despair can be the exception and not the rule.”

Still Stressed Out About The Election? You’re Not Alone.

Although the presidential election ended 71 days ago, more than 1 in 3 Americans continue to experience inner turmoil over the outcome.

According to a new Washington Post-ABC News Poll, 35 percent of those polled say Trump’s election has increased their normal stress level. Only 12 percent say it has reduced their stress. The majority, 52 percent, say it’s made no difference.

The groups most likely to say their stress has increased after the election include Democrats, Hillary Clinton supporters, Hispanics and people without a religious affiliation. Of those who voted for Clinton, 39 percent say their stress has increased a “great deal” and 25 percent say it has increased “somewhat.”

More than half of Hispanic respondents ― 54 percent ― say that Trump’s election has boosted their stress levels. Thirty-eight percent of African-American voters agree, versus only 29 percent of white voters.

Women are also more likely to report anxiety over Trump’s election, with 41 percent saying it has increased their stress levels, 20 percent by a great deal. Men tend to be more indifferent, with 58 percent saying the election has made no difference in how stressed they are.

Trump supporters and Republicans are significantly less stressed about his future presidency. Sixty-five percent of Trump voters and the same percentage of Republicans say the election result has made no difference in their stress levels, while 31 percent of Trump voters and 25 percent of Republicans say it has actually decreased their worries.

A few other groups also say the election didn’t affect their stress levels. Sixty-three percent of people who didn’t vote or who voted for a third-party candidate say the election has made no difference in how stressed they are.

The Washington Post-ABC News Poll was conducted by telephone Jan. 12-15, 2017, among a random national sample of 1,005 adults, including landline and cellphone respondents. Overall results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Why Would Anyone Listen To Betsy DeVos On The Subject Of Education? It Can’t Be Results.

During the hearings on Betsy DeVos, Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Education, the Republican Senator Richard Burr from North Carolina asked why people get all hung up on process, when they should be talking about “results.” DeVos agreed. I was hoping the committee might then discuss the results of DeVos reforms in Michigan and Detroit. Or anywhere else. How awesome is Detroit, which is overrun with charters? On the National Assessment of Educational Progress, it is the lowest performing urban district in the nation. How awesome are Milwaukee and Cleveland, which have had vouchers and charters for more than 20 years? They barely top Detroit among the lowest performing urban districts in the nation.

Here is what the New York Times said about charters in Detroit:

Michigan leapt at the promise of charter schools 23 years ago, betting big that choice and competition would improve public schools. It got competition, and chaos.

Detroit schools have long been in decline academically and financially. But over the past five years, divisive politics and educational ideology and a scramble for money have combined to produce a public education fiasco that is perhaps unparalleled in the United States.

While the idea was to foster academic competition, the unchecked growth of charters has created a glut of schools competing for some of the nation’s poorest students, enticing them to enroll with cash bonuses, laptops, raffle tickets for iPads and bicycles. Leaders of charter and traditional schools alike say they are being cannibalized, fighting so hard over students and the limited public dollars that follow them that no one thrives.

Detroit now has a bigger share of students in charters than any American city except New Orleans, which turned almost all its schools into charters after Hurricane Katrina. But half the charters perform only as well, or worse than, Detroit’s traditional public schools.

“The point was to raise all schools,” said Scott Romney, a lawyer and board member of New Detroit, a civic group formed after the 1967 race riots here. “Instead, we’ve had a total and complete collapse of education in this city.”

This morning I was on the NPR radio show from D.C. that used to be the Diane Rehm show but is now called “1A,” with Rick Hess of the DeVos-funded American Enterprise Institute, and he said that Detroit charters were outperforming Detroit public schools. As Stephen Henderson, the editor of the Detroit Free Press, wrote not long ago, the charters in Detroit vary in quality but many of them are failing and they are no better than the public schools.

Henderson deconstructed the CREDO studies that Rick Hess cited, and concluded:

In a city like Detroit, for instance, where, on average, students perform well below statewide norms, kids in charter schools should more quickly close their gaps than kids in traditional public schools.

Hypothetically.

The problem is they really haven’t. Not for 20 years, dating to the beginning of Michigan’s charter experiment.

CREDO also found that, for instance, 63% of charters statewide perform no better than traditional public schools in math. And in Detroit, nearly half all charters do no better than traditional public schools in reading.

Overall, about 84% of charter students perform below state averages in math; the number is 80% for reading. That tracks closely with the outcomes for traditional public schools.

The gains for charter students are also clustered, in many instances, in high-performing outliers. But because Michigan does not require charter operators to have proven track records before they open schools or do much to hold them accountable after their schools open, the number of underperforming charter schools far outweighs the high achievers.

In addition, the CREDO results need to be considered in the context of other data about charter schools.

The Free Press investigation of charter schools, for instance, revealed that even taking poverty into account, charter schools essentially perform the same as traditional public schools, and in some cases, a little worse.

If Detroit, which is still the lowest-performing urban district in the nation, is the DeVos model of “success,” then our nation’s education system is doomed.

Similarly, Michigan’s standing on the National Assessment of Educational Progress has dropped, in some cases dramatically since 2003, not long after Michigan committed to “choice” as its strategy for reform. EdTrust wrote a report warning that the state was on its way to the bottom:

Among the 2015 NAEP results highlighted in the report:

• Michigan ranked 41st in fourth-grade reading, down from 28th in 2003.

• The state ranked 42nd in fourth-grade math, down from 27 in 2003.

• It ranked 31st in eighth-grade reading, down from 27th in 2003.

• It ranked 38th in eight-grade math, down from 34th.

Given these dismal results, why would anyone listen to Betsy DeVos on the subject of education? It must be the tens of millions of dollars she has donated to Republicans, including 10 of the 12 who sit on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committeee (HELP), which will judge her fitness to serve as Secretary of Education). It can’t be results.

Now is the Time: Do the Next, Right Thing

We will make only one choice.

Throughout our lives, we do only one thing. Again and again, moment by moment, year after year. It is how we live our days, how we shape our lives.

Our choice is this: What is the next, right thing for us to do? Where, in this moment, will we place our time, our care, our attention? Do we remain as we are, do we move? do we speak or keep silent, attend to this person, or that task, or turn away, in this direction, or that?

Each new moment demands a fresh choice.

after every decision, there is yet another to be made. And another. Ours are not so often obviously dramatic choices. We are rarely called upon to know the time to change careers, the day to get married, the hour to leave the city of our birth. Most choices are small, quiet, intimate things that flow from us as a breath, as water exhaled from a mountain spring. Endless, simple, one by one thimbles of water tumble into the next, creating the smallest trickles playing this way and that. Still. Over time, with neither map nor plan – through surprising twists, curving around unforeseen obstacles-mere droplets of water will always invariably find their way down, down, through the valley, completing their pilgrimage at last to become one, an ancient and familiar melting, into the sea, from which it came.

At every point of resistance, any threat of change, our tiny stream makes a choice: To go right or left? Over or around? Or it may just stop, right where it is. Without moving, our stream becomes a shallow pool, creates a slowly growing fullness, waiting. Waiting for that singularly perfect moment when the only possible next thing is to spill itself out and over, stumbling and rushing everywhere along its way.

The stream knows nothing of what lies ahead. It is not conscious of planning for any possible future. It is simply following the path of least resistance, motivated by gravity. Still, how does the water “decide” to go right, or left, when approaching a boulder, a fallen tree? And yet, a choice is made. Inch by inch, the water does the next, right thing, perhaps encountering tiny rivulets or flowing creeks along the way. By the end of the journey, if we look back, we witness the gradual, evolving birth of what we now realize has, drop by drop, choice by choice, become a stream.

A stream is little more than an ongoing fidelity, a consecrated relationship. A never-ending conversation between water, gravity, earth, overcoming obstacles, in a relationship born over time, which gives birth to this astonishing miracle we then call, “stream.” This ancient, elemental rhythm between water and earth creates all the streams that saturate all the seas that cover all the world.

So it is with our lives. The only choice we ever make is one called out from us by a similarly vital inner gravity, an invisible thread that carries our life forward, until our life – this one wild and precious life, meets the world. In all its wonder and promise, in all its ferocity and confusion. Just as it is.

So. We must prepare. We will make choices. If fortune smiles upon us we will make good, honorable, strong choices. But every decision we make, no matter how small, shapes the ground of our being. Each choice helps form the foundation upon which we stand, and live, and act.

This is our field of battle: Here, who we are meets what is in the world. This essential, heroic relationship, this intimate communion between the quiet wisdom of our hearts, and the ways the world emerges, moment by moment, right before our eyes becomes our most reliable tool, our most potent weapon, our true north, a lifelong practice of deep and holy listening for that very next, right thing we will – make no mistake – absolutely, and sooner than we imagine, be required to choose.

Our lives hang in the balance. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all.

How Technologies are Helping to Improve Mental Health Care

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Justin T. Baker, MD, PhD

2017-01-18-1484761811-2100551-BakerHeadshot198Mar3016.jpgIn today’s world, everyone carries a smartphone. Why not capitalize on this and develop apps that will help improve health care–specifically mental health care? This is a question that many start-up companies and McLean Hospital are asking.

Ideally, technology should create a sensible balance in supporting and enhancing clinical care for patients while providing real-time behavioral and physiological data for doctors and researchers. This much-needed data will help lead us to breakthroughs in better understanding the biology of mental illness.

At McLean, we’ve been working with innovative startup companies that have developed smartphone applications and other devices to help individuals better manage their illnesses, and we’ve offered these tools to some of our outpatient populations. Though there has been some mixed feedback, most patients are enthusiastic about the use of these apps, as individuals often want to actively participate in their own care. Our young patients who are technically savvy see it as a natural connection to have an app that allows them to better track their progress and connect with their treatment providers.

This trend towards technology in treatment holds great promise for the younger population. Approximately 20 percent of teenagers ages 13 to 18 in the United States experience severe mental disorders each year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for those ages 15 to 24. Technological tools have the potential to become a lifesaving bridge between teens and young adults and the mental health field.

As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, we’re starting to see devices and software become more nuanced. Though there are some critical issues to resolve–privacy, security, legal liability, reimbursement, and the ethics of gathering data and delivery services through devices rather than humans–if we find solutions to these issues and make sure that technologies are tailored to real-world patients, such advancements can have a transformational impact in not only improving care but expanding access to care.

McLean is currently using technology to help improve care among different populations. Other forms of technology we hope to adopt in the next few years include apps that help us reduce repeat patient admissions by tracking patients’ progress after hospitalization and intervening when needed to help reduce relapse and promote recovery.

There is extremely exciting and promising work going on in the field and by continuing to integrate technology into healthcare, we are improving lives.

Their first chapter began at the University of Maryland in September 2011. As of December 2012, we have expanded our movement to 11 colleges and donated over 90,000 pounds of food, feeding over 72,000 meals to Americans. They were chosen by celebrity judge Kevin Bacon as the winner of UMD’s Do Good Challenge, and also recently won the ,000 grand prize in Ashoka’s Banking on Youth Competition. After finding that over 75% of college campuses across America have no food recovery program, they are on a mission to expand this program to other colleges. As they transition from volunteer leadership to a professional 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, their goal is donating 50 million pounds of food in the next five years.

Watch The Obamas’ Cute Playdate With The Kids Who Received Their Swing Set

After donating their daughters’ swing set, President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama got to see just how much happiness the gift brought its new owners.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Obamas visited the Jobs Have Priority Naylor Road Family Shelter, the shelter that received the swing set, in Washington, D.C. The president pushed kids on the swings, while the first lady showed them how to use the rope swing.

Watch the kids reacting to seeing the Obamas below.

The Obamas offered the swing set, called “Malia and Sasha’s Castle” and put up on the South Lawn of the White House in March 2009, to the Trump family, who declined. It will now be a fun spot for families at the Jobs Have Priority Shelter, which aims to “move homeless individuals from dependency to self-sufficiency by removing the barriers that prevent them from being successful.”

On its Facebook page, the team at the shelter wrote that it was “honored” the Obamas chose it as the owner of their beloved play set. The post also included the hashtag #ForeverThankful.

How To Recover From Blogger Burnout In 3 Easy Ways

What Happens When You Step Away

What happens when you’ve slowed down on social media to truly reflect where you’re heading with your business?

What happens when you lose the flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter anymore?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

Learning more about yourself and allowing your commitment to shine through regardless of where you think you should be in business are important steps to showing up and serving others through your business.

A New Urine Test Could Measure How Healthy Your Diet Is

How healthy is your diet? The most specific answer you could probably muster might be something like “pretty healthy” or “not really that healthy.”

But now, a new urine test provides a more specific and reliable answer to that question, according to a small new study.

The test detects and measures the levels of certain biological markers that are created when foods such as meat, fruit and vegetables are broken down by the body after a person eats them, the researchers found. [7 Foods You Can Overdose On]

These markers can more objectively indicate whether a person eats a healthy diet — for example, one that is rich in fruits and vegetables, said lead study author Isabel Garcia-Perez, a research associate in the Imperial College London Department of Medicine. The test can be run in 5 minutes, according to the study.

In the study, the researchers asked 19 people to follow four different diets that ranged from very healthy (high in fruits and vegetables) to quite unhealthy (with lots of high-fat foods and low in fruits and vegetables). Each person in the study followed each of these four diets: They stayed at a lab, on four separate occasions, for three days at a time, and during each stay, the researchers collected the people’s urine samples in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Then, the researchers analyzed the urine samples for the various chemical compounds that are produced when the body breaks down food. Some of these compounds indicate that a person has recently eaten a certain type of food, such as red meat, chicken, fish, or fruits or vegetables. Other compounds provide an even more detailed look at a person’s diet by indicating that he or she has recently consumed specific foods, such as grapes, citrus fruits or leafy green vegetables, according to the study, published today (Jan. 12) in the journal The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Based on the results of their tests, the researchers created a model profile of urine compounds that indicates that a person is eating a healthy diet that’s rich in fruits and vegetables. [Pee a Rainbow: Scientist Snaps Shot of Colorful Urine]

This model urine profile can be compared with any person’s urine profile, to provide an instant indicator of how healthy the person’s diet is, the researchers said.

In their study, the researchers also tested the accuracy of the new test by looking at urine samples and dietary information from 225 people in the U.K. and 66 people in Denmark from a previous study. The researchers were able to accurately predict these people’s diets based on just their urine samples, according to the findings.

The new test could be used in research that looks at people’s dietary habits, the researchers said. Typically, the information on people’s diets that is used in studies is self-reported. In contrast, the new test provides information that is more objective and accurate, the researchers said.

However, the work on the test is still in its initial stages, and it is not commercially available yet, Garcia-Perez said. The researchers are working on developing the test further, she told Live Science. Once the test is developed further, it could also be used one day in weight-loss programs to monitor whether people are following their diets, Garcia-Perez said.

John Kerry: It Was ‘Inappropriate’ For Donald Trump To Knock Germany’s Leader On Refugee Policy

WASHINGTON ― Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that President-elect Donald Trump had made a mistake by attacking German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s history of admitting refugees to her country.

“I thought, frankly, it was inappropriate for a president-elect of the United States to be stepping into the politics of other countries in a quite direct manner,” Kerry told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. “He’ll have to speak to that. As of Friday, he’s responsible for that relationship.”

Trump said in an interview with the Times of London and the German newspaper Bild that Merkel had made “one very catastrophic mistake, and that was taking all of these illegals,” referring to the Syrian refugees and other migrants the country took in. The president-elect has frequently derided Syrian refugees as a “Trojan horse” for terrorists ― and once officially proposed banning all Muslims from entering the U.S., but later said he would like to ban people from certain countries, mostly majority-Muslim ones.

Trump isn’t the president yet, which means the Obama administration is still in charge of foreign policy ― even when the president-elect makes it difficult. When Merkel responded to Trump, she stressed that he hadn’t taken office yet.

“I’m waiting for his inauguration, as is proper,” she said in Berlin, Politico reported. “Then we’ll work with him on all levels. He has just stated his positions, which have been known for quite some time. My positions are also known.”

Kerry said he thought Merkel “was extremely courageous” in her response to the refugee crisis and that the Obama administration “valued her leadership enormously.”

“I think we have to be very careful about suggesting that one of the strongest leaders in Europe and most of important players with respect to where we are heading made one mistake or another,” Kerry said of Trump’s comments. “I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to be commenting on that.”

Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Feeling Stifled? 4 Ways To Turn It Around

2017-01-10-1484065123-6370794-54728769_m.jpg

In life, we can’t always control what happens to us, but we can always choose our response to it.

It was apparent at an early age that I was gifted with an abundance of energy. During my first years of elementary school, my teachers enjoyed my creativity and enthusiasm. However, my third grade teacher found my gregarious nature to be a bit challenging–so she tried something different.

When my Mom and Dad came to the parent teacher conferences that fall, they walked around the classroom looking for my desk. “Where’s Mike’s desk?” my Dad asked. “Oh,” said the teacher, “I put his desk back there,” pointing to the back of the room.

My parents walked back to find that my desk had been placed behind a folding screen. As they looked at my space, they smiled at each other. I had decorated the whole inside of the screen with pictures of rainbows, smiling faces, and other colorful drawings. There was even a sign that read, Mike’s Place.

During the conference, they learned that my teacher’s plan to isolate my enthusiasm had backfired. Seeing what I created had prompted other kids to ask, “When do we get our turn in the back?”

My resilient creative spirit had decided to make the best of the situation. Instead of this event being an obstacle, it became an opportunity to create my own office.

As an adult, that experience still rings true for me today. So, taking cues from my 8-year-old self, here are a few ways to make lemonade from life lemons–to reframe potentially negative experiences into positive ones:

Think: It could be worse. It really could. In fact, many of the things we complain about aren’t really problems but rather first-world inconveniences. Issues like cars that don’t start; cold water instead of hot; and burned toast are simply irritations. Try visiting an impoverished part of the city or traveling to a third-world country to get a dose of humility and perspective. We have plenty to appreciate.

Try: Softening your stance.
Some of the best advice I ever received was to “Soften my stance.” Basically, this means staying determined but reconsidering our approach. There are many different ways to address any given situation, so sometimes if we step back, take a deep breath, and reconsider our choices before acting or speaking, we can create the momentum for a different result.

Ask: What have I learned? It is said, “Hindsight is 20/20,” what about foresight? If we can look backwards to learn from our past problems, then we can we look forward to knowing that we will create new solutions–although we may not yet know how. All of our life experiences have the potential to be life lessons. Paying attention to these lessons can bring us new knowledge and expand our creativity.

Remember: “What doesn’t kill you…” Recall the expression, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” as a poignant reminder that we are always growing and expanding in all ways. Each of our experiences–especially the difficult ones–have made us stronger and wiser. Think back to the biggest events of your life and appreciate how they’ve changed you and made you more resilient.

Now when life hands you lemons, remind yourself that you have the power to respond to the situation in many ways. You can step into any situation and have the confidence and assurance that things will eventually work out for the best. You can learn to make lemonade.

The Two Tribes

As we approach Inauguration day, I want to offer a deeper, broader context for the divisions we are facing as a nation.

The Two Tribes

In the beginning, when the first humans came across each other, it went two ways. Upon seeing someone different, the more fearful one said, “You’re different. Go away.” The other, upon seeing someone not like him, said, “You’re different. Come, teach me what I don’t know.” While our reasoning has grown more complicated throughout the centuries, it’s essentially the same. “Go away” or “Come, teach me.”

Since the beginning, the two tribes have had their philosophies. The “Go away” tribe has always believed that human beings, by their nature, are self-serving and untrustworthy, in need of control. The “Go away” tribe believes in stringent laws and constraints, both moral and legal, to ensure that people don’t run amuck. The “Come, teach me” tribe believes that human beings, by their nature, are kind and trustworthy. The “Come, teach me” tribe believes in empowering laws that cultivate freedom, to ensure that people actualize their web of gifts through relationship.

The truth is that we are born into both tribes and can move from one to the other, depending on the level of our fear. The times of genocide throughout history mark the extreme, malignant manifestation of the “Go away” tribe. Distorted by fear, it’s not enough just to say, “Go away.” For unbridled fear turns to anger, which normalized turns into prejudice and hate. Such deep, embedded fear dictates that we need to make sure that those who are different can’t return. And so, we exile them, jail them, hurt them, and in extremely ugly cases, persecute and kill them.

However, the times of enlightenment throughout history mark the extreme manifestation of the “Come, teach me” tribe, which through learning and wonder leads to eras of compassion and cooperation. Empowered by trust, curiosity turns into interdependence and a belief that we are more together than alone. When allowed to blossom, we realize that we need each other and our diversity of gifts to make life whole. This ethic is what gave rise to democracy in the first place. This is why America has grown so strong from welcoming immigrants for over two hundred years.

That we as a nation have moved through periods of isolationism and inclusion only shows how we as a people keep shifting between the two tribes. Our nation today has coagulated into these primary camps. For the moment, we seem to be heading into another period of isolationism and fear of those who are different.

I admit that I am of the “Come, teach me” tribe, at least until my fear overrides my better judgment. Though I always pray for our return to each other. And so, I believe it’s imperative that we educate our children to live according to the fundamental dynamic that all the spiritual traditions teach: that we are all parts of one indivisible whole, which love and suffering reveal. And while we come apart from time to time, like now, while we push each other away in our fear, the natural resting position of life on Earth is to join. So that we can release the life-force inherent in the biological, societal, and mystical fact that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Love, trust, courage, and the ability to listen are the agencies of heart that allow us to rejoin. These are the qualities that each soul has waiting within it like golden seeds to be watered by the strength of our kindness. This is the purpose of community: to water these seeds and to join and rejoin.

John Lewis Wouldn’t Invite Donald Trump To Visit Selma With Him

Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) has made it very clear that he is not a fan of President-elect Donald Trump ― so much so that he wouldn’t even invite Trump to visit Selma, Alabama, with him.

“I would not invite him to come,” Lewis said during a wide-ranging interview with “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

In 1965, Lewis, a civil rights icon whose work led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of that year, was badly beaten on Edmund Pettus Bridge during Bloody Sunday. He often visits the city with politicians from both parties, and has even been there with Vice President-elect Mike Pence. Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush went to Selma with Lewis and others to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in 2015.

Lewis said on Sunday that he would not try to stop a Trump visit and that maybe the president-elect would leave Selma better off than when he came.

“Well, by going to Selma, like President Bush, President Clinton, President Obama, maybe he would learn something,” Lewis said. “Maybe he would get religion.”

Lewis and Trump have been sparring with each other since last week. On Friday, the civil rights icon said Trump is not a “legitimate president,” based on reports of Russian interference in the 2016 election. He added that he will not attend Trump’s inauguration, making it the first one he’s missed since his election to Congress in 1986.

Trump responded to Lewis via Twitter, saying the civil rights legend is “all talk, talk, talk ― no action.”

Lewis told “Meet The Press” host Chuck Todd that it would be “almost impossible” for him to work with Trump since he does not see the president-elect’s win as legitimate.

Later in the interview, Lewis said he agrees with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who proposed establishing a special committee to investigate allegations of Russian interference in the election.

Todd asked what, if anything, Trump could do to get Lewis to work with him.

“You know, I’ve had an opportunity to meet with every president since President Kennedy, except President Nixon. I met with President Nixon when he was out of the White House. And it’s painful. It is hard. It is difficult to see our country come to where it is today,” Lewis said.

“There’s a whole body of people in America today that believe there was a conspiracy, a deliberate, systematic effort to destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton and place this person in the White House,” Lewis continued. “There were outside forces.”

Here’s to the Swimmers & the Spectators: A Lesson in Vulnerability.

I had just finished a set when she walked by, carrying the same hot pink swim bag I have, except she was three decades younger. I could tell by her stride, she was precocious, tenacious, an independent thinker and a fish in the water, just like I am.

She waved at me with her kickboard. I waved back with my paddle.

The girl and I were the only ones in the pool. The sun hadn’t risen above the building yet. It was too early, too cold and too quiet for criticism.

I heard him before I saw him, every three strokes as I turned my head into the pocket: “Streamline! Streamline! Nine strokes from the middle! One! Twoooo! Threeee!” He was creating anxious waves in the placid Sunday morning air. I didn’t care for his disruptive ways, but I wasn’t going to let him ruin my ritual.

I finished another set and put my paddles down. It was impossible not to notice him: sitting in a chair directly in front of her lane, paper coffee cup in one hand, iPhone in the other, his baseball hat tilted to one side (not on purpose), his glasses slightly slanted to the other side. Everything about him appeared askew, including his left ankle crossed over his right thigh, knee bouncing: a product of too much caffeine and repressed shame and anger channeled through vicarious parenting.

“I want to put on my fins for the next set, Dad.” She took a chug from her ladybug sippy cup.
“Fins are way too easy.”
“No they’re not!”
She exclaimed with confidence.
“Fine. Put on your fins then.” He continued to bark at her until I finished my last set.

I got out and dried myself off. The girl took a rest after removing her fins, panting and clinging to the wall like a barnacle trying to break free. We made eye contact.

“You’re doing awesome!” I waved again.
“Thanks. This is my dad. He’s my coach. I hate it!” She deflected the truth with humor.
“I don’t blame you.” I did the same, except we both knew we weren’t joking, he didn’t though, he laughed: “You should see me during tennis lessons!”
“I can only imagine,” I said snidely.
“You sure swim the distance. You do master swim?”
“No. I swim for sanity. Do you do master swim?”
“Ha. No, I don’t swim. I’m not in shape, I can hardly make a lap.”

I wanted to walk over and push his chair in the pool, with him in it.
“Maybe it would be helpful since you’re coaching her.”
He shrugged his fleece adorned shoulders: “I guess, but I’d have to get in shape first.”
“Or, you could just start swimming, that’ll get you in shape.”
“Eh, you’re probably right…”

When I first started writing publicly, I was deeply affected by the criticism of others about my work. Trolls, strangers, acquaintances, friends and some peripheral family members had many things to say, some good and some downright unsupportive and nasty. To counter the naysayers, my therapist offered me the words of Brené Brown, which I’ve never forgotten:

A lot of cheap seats in the arena are filled with people who never venture onto the floor. They just hurl mean-spirited criticisms and put-downs from a safe distance. The problem is, when we stop caring what people think and stop feeling hut by cruelty, we lose our ability to connect. But when we’re defined by what people think, we lose the courage to be vulnerable. Therefore, we need to be selective about the feedback we let into our lives. For me, if you’re not in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback. ~Brené Brown, Rising Strong

People who criticize others for doing what they love are terrified of vulnerability, because, they themselves are paralyzed by the thoughts of others. They can’t conceive of what it’s like to love something so much that you’ll get up on a cold Sunday morning to jump into the water, or wake at 5AM to pour your heart out, no matter what anyone has to say about it.

It’s easy to sit far enough away from the water where you can’t get splashed. The spectator perspective dons the illusion, that you can see it all: what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s good and what’s bad, how to do it better and faster. But, the truth is, you don’t know what it’s like or what it takes until you’ve typed all of the keys and done all of the laps. You just don’t know.

I am selective these days, about what I let in and what I don’t. I hear it all, I even feel it, but I only choose to trust the people who are in it, too. They tend to have the least amount of criticism, because, they’re too busy doing what they love; all they can usually muster is a wave and a thumbs up.

I wholeheartedly agree with Brené Brown. I’m in it with her, putting myself out there, in there. I’m in that arena, too, getting my ass kicked. There are many of us in here.

So, I write this for the little girl in lane 8 and all of my teammates, and to you, the spectators. We welcome you to join us in here, but if you’re not interested in getting your ass kicked, too, then we’re not interested in your feedback.

I packed up my swim gear and swung my hot pink bag over my shoulder. I walked in front of his chair and leaned into the lane:“You’re a great swimmer.” She believed me, I could tell. It takes one to know one.

This Local News Segment Shows The Obamacare Danger Ahead For Republicans

Popular resistance to the repeal of the Affordable Care Act has begun, with the first signal that Republicans could face major political repercussions coming from the large Denver suburb of Aurora, Colorado.

Congressman Mike Coffman, a Republican who represents the swing district there, planned a small event at a library to meet with constituents. He expected just a handful of people, but 150 individuals showed up. Most of them, according to local media reports, were present to plead with him not to go forward with an Obamacare repeal without a suitable replacement in place.

Coffman decided to let only four people into the room at a time, yielding images on social media that looked like this:

The local NBC 9 News report on the event was brutal for Coffman from start to finish, highlighting Berthie Ruoff, a breast cancer survivor who is worried she will be unable to buy insurance without the law’s protections.

“I’m going to potentially lose my health insurance. I’ve had a pre-existing condition, I’ve had breast cancer. What is going to happen to me?” she said with tears in her eyes.

With the help of local police, who put up caution tape near a side entrance, Coffman left the building minutes before the town hall meeting was scheduled to end.

“We were told at one point, everyone will get their time. And then he sneaks out six minutes early,” a woman at the meeting told NBC 9.

Coffman claimed in a statement to NBC 9 that he was limited by his reservation at the library.

“Unfortunately, we only reserved the room at the Aurora Central Library for 90 minutes, which is usually plenty of time to see everyone,” he said. “For those who were unable to see the congressman today, we apologize.”

Meanwhile, Coffman appears to be resolute in his commitment to repealing the landmark law. He penned an op-ed with the three other House Republicans from Colorado insisting that “full repeal” is the only way to solve the country’s health care problems. And the American Action Network, a conservative political action committee with ties to congressional GOP leadership, has announced it will spend $ 1.4 million on advertisements touting the Republicans’ plan to replace Obamacare in several Republican congressional districts, including Coffman’s.

The problem for Republicans is that their main objections to the ACA ― that deductibles and premiums are too high and networks are too narrow ― can really only be solved by a combination of reducing the growth of costs and providing further subsidies for coverage. Republicans in general have shown little willingness to spend more to help people pay for health care, but have instead argued that rolling back insurance regulations and unleashing the free market will do the trick. Without significant subsidies, though, the industry has no way of covering those with pre-existing conditions, which Republicans have promised any replacement will do.

President-elect Donald Trump has said that a replacement could come within hours of repeal, but as of yet, no replacement exists.

Many Republicans have also promised that people with pre-existing conditions, such as Berthie Ruoff, will still be able to purchase insurance once the law is overturned. But the ACA ended the past practice of discrimination based on medical history in part by enacting the individual mandate, which ensures that the insurance companies would get new customers to offset the cost of the sicker people it would have to cover. Republicans are dead set on repealing the individual mandate, which they view as government overreach.

The pushback in Aurora suggests Republicans may be in for a world of political pain as they push forward with repeal. It recalls a few other popular uprisings against Washington, all of them triggered by congressional efforts to make big changes to health care and entitlement programs. In the summer of 2009, hundreds of thousands of people swarmed town halls in opposition to Obamacare. In 2005, the nation loudly pushed back against GOP attempts to cut or privatize Social Security, contributing to the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006. In 1993, when President Bill Clinton tried to rewrite the rules for the health care system, the insurance industry was able to exploit popular fears of change and scuttle the effort. The failure contributed to the GOP takeover of Congress in 1994.

The Insanity of a New Cold War: A Top Russian Scholar Sounds the Alarm

In this week’s episode of KCRW’s “Scheer Intelligence,” host Robert Scheer is joined by Russian-born professor Sergei Plekhanov. Plekhanov teaches at York University in Toronto and has a wealth of knowledge about Russian culture and politics, which, he argues, are overlooked by Western media.

The conversation begins with a brief discussion of the history between the United States and Russia, particularly during the Cold War. Scheer then asks Plekhanov about U.S. attitudes toward Russia today.

Listen to the interview below:

In the eyes of some in the United States, “Russia has undermined the international order,” Plekhanov says. “So,” he continued, “Russia needs to be punished, Russia needs to be contained. That’s the view.”

Scheer brings up the recent political mayhem over allegations of Russian hacking, particularly the role of FBI Director James Comey and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Clapper makes it seem like we are entering another chapter of the Cold War, Scheer says, but “Putin is not, any longer, a Communist.”

Plekhanov delves into how Russia is “transitioning,” and argues that Putin “is concerned about the survivability of Russia.”

Western beliefs about Russia aren’t accurate, he continues. “Russians are informed,” he explains, refuting Western beliefs that Russians only get their daily news from KGB-run sources.

“Can you have both security and democracy?” Plekhanov muses. “Understandably enough, the Russians are more concerned about security.”

Scheer and Plekhanov discuss how Russia is advancing its infrastructure and economy, and how this will continue during the Trump administration. Plekhanov says:

“Somebody like Trump, who thinks like a businessman–I really think that there are more opportunities than dangers with regards to Russia. So we’re stuck in this obsolete policy of containment. … But in the meantime, we might actually benefit tremendously from being part of this larger network of economic ties and economic development that is growing in Eurasia.

“I’m sure some people will say, ‘Well, Sergei is just a propagandist for Putin,’ ” he concludes. “By the way, I’ve never voted for Putin as a Russian, and I’m not a Putin supporter. I’m an academic who’s trying to make sense of what’s happening in the world. And I’m appalled at the quality of reporting on Russia that dominates the media here in the West.”

The Year of Courage

2017-01-10-1484073658-7328710-Courage.jpg
Copyright: crazymedia / 123RF Stock Photo

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
―Anais Nin

Years ago I gave up New Year’s Resolutions, because they always fell apart for me by March! Now instead I choose a theme each year – something I want to ponder, practice, and live into.

2016 was the year of noticing. I practiced noticing all year and got better and better at it – noticing small things and large patterns, how beautiful aging faces really are, and what people leave unsaid.

I’ve named 2017 the year of courage.

As we grow older, courage sometimes shows up in ways that are different from how it showed up in our younger years. For example, it took courage for my friend Joy to decide to stop downhill skiing. An excellent skier, she has loved skiing. And she’s past 70 and notices her reflexes have slowed down. She felt vulnerable and less confident the last couple of times she skiied. So – does her decision not to ski shrink or expand her life? I asked Joy. Her response was interesting. She said that although she thought it would shrink it, she now feels it actually expanded it. A good friend of hers fell and broke a leg skiing last year. Recovery has been slow and painful. “I had the courage to stop before that was me,” she said. And she’s recently started cross-country skiing, which she’d never tried before. “It’s a whole new skill,” she told me. “And I’m loving learning something new.”

Maybe it’s also true that as we age, the courage we need is different – not physical daring-type courage, but emotional and relational. Think of the courage to keep learning, to acknowledge when we don’t know, to see the humanity in someone we disagree with, to forgive.

I can already think of many ways I’m hoping to have courage this year:

  • To say “yes” to opportunities, challenges, life
  • To say “no” when I don’t want to do something
  • Not to be so sure I’m right about things
  • To listen deeply to people who have different views of things
  • To take care of myself, including eating less sugar
  • To create and participate in things that are a lot of fun
  • To stretch myself – keep learning
  • To speak up in the face of prejudice and injustice
  • To speak openly of spiritual matters
  • To love people deeply and well

Anne Lamott calls me to find new depths of courage:

“If there is one door in the castle you have been told not to go through, you must.
Otherwise, you’ll just be rearranging furniture in rooms you’ve already been in.”

What would be a good theme for your 2017? My friend Donna named her year “Simplify.” Before choosing courage, I considered curiosity, generosity and love. Somehow this quote tipped me to courage: “Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit.” ―Baltasar Gracian

COACHING QUESTIONS

  1. Consider choosing a theme for 2017.
  2. What will your theme for the new year be?
  3. How might it make 2017 a better year?
  4. Have a meaningful, fulfilling New Year!

New Discovery Sheds Light On The Origins Of Complex Life

Before complex life evolved, 1.7 billion years ago, only single-celled bacteria and archaea existed. Bacteria and archaea ― microorganisms together known as prokaryotes ― represent two of the three basic branches of all life. The third branch is eukaryotes, organisms with more complex cells that comprise the higher forms of life, up to humans.

The origin of these complex eukaryotic cells is considered by scientists to be one of the major evolutionary leaps in the history of life on Earth, but how the complex cells evolved from the simple-celled microbes has been something of a mystery.

But a recently discovered class of microorganisms, deemed “marvel microbes” for their unique properties, sheds light on the evolutionary transition from simple to complex cells.

In a paper published this week in the journal Nature, an international team of microbiologists presented its discovery of a microbe that is more closely related to complex life than any other simple microorganism.

“Our new paper tells what our microbial ancestors might have looked like,” Dr. Thijs Ettema, a biologist at Uppsala University in Sweden and the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post. “We humans are eukaryotes, and our cells are big and complex. In contrast, the cells of bacteria and archaea are tiny and simple. The main question is how the big and complex cells of eukaryotes have evolved from the smaller and simpler prokaryotic cells.”

The findings build on previous work from famed American microbiologist Carl Woese, who showed that eukaryotes evolved from archaea. The two types of organisms shared a common ancestry, but how the eukaryotes evolved into complex life from small, simple cells was unknown.

The new study details the discovery of a new group of archaea, the Asgard archaea, which provide insight on how eukaryotes evolved. Asgard archaea microbes fall into one of four known lineages, named after Norse gods. They’re typically found in environments such as the sea floor, river sediments, lakes and hot springs. What’s unusual about Asgard archaea is that while they are prokaryotes, just like bacteria and archaea, they have several eukaryotic genes in their genome, which suggests we may have evolved from these microbes.

“[Asgard archaea] represent a sister group of eukaryotes in the tree of life,” Etterma said. “In addition to that, their genomes contain a lot of important eukaryotic genes. Altogether, the discovery of these Asgard archaea tells us that eukaryotes, and hence humans as well, share a common ancestry.”

These “microbial cousins,” as he puts it, already contained certain genes that later became important in the process of eukaryotic cells to become as complex as humans are today.

The fact that Asgard archaea share several genes with more complex life forms suggests that their cells may feature something similar to the structures that make eukaryotes complex, only more simplified. To be sure, scientists need to conduct further research, putting their cells under a microscope for the first time.

“These organisms are our closest microbial relatives, and we know next to nothing about them,” Ettema said in a statement. “Current methods allow us to take a first genetic sneak peek. It is really exciting!’’

Anti-Trump Protesters Stage Washington Civil Rights March

U.S. civil rights activists kicked off a week of protests ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration with a march in Washington on Saturday, vowing to keep fighting for equality and justice under the upcoming administration.

Chanting “no justice, no peace,” a few thousand protesters headed by the Rev. Al Sharpton marched along the National Mall toward the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, about two miles (3 km) from the steps of the U.S. Capitol, where Trump will be sworn in as president on Friday.

Pre-march speakers denounced Trump to protesters, who braved drizzle and temperatures just above freezing to show their support for minority rights and President Barack Obama’s signature healthcare law, which Trump has vowed to dismantle.

“We stand together, not as a people of hate, but as a people of hope,” said Charley Hames Jr., president of the Oakland, California, chapter of Sharpton’s National Action Network. “We believe this march is the first of many.”

Trump, a New York real estate developer, won with a populist platform that included promises to build a wall along the Mexican border and restrict immigration from Muslim countries. He also promised to crack down on companies moving jobs out of the United States.

Trump’s disparaging comments about immigrants and women and stance against Obama’s healthcare law have drawn the anger of many on the left, who plan a series of protests.

“He’s a clown,” said marcher Ken Coopwood Jr., 17, of Washington. “I think he’s not going to care about much, unless it’s personal.”

Civil rights groups including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Council of La Raza, as well as Democratic lawmakers had all said they would take part in Saturday’s march.

The march began hours after Trump blasted U.S. Representative John Lewis after the Georgia Democrat and civil rights campaigner said he did not see Trump as a legitimate president.

Lewis told NBC News in an interview for Sunday’s “Meet the Press” that he believed Russia’s alleged hacking aimed at helping Trump put his legitimacy into question.

Trump replied on Twitter on Saturday that Lewis should focus instead on his Atlanta district. “All talk, talk, talk – no action or results! Sad!,” he wrote.

About 30 groups, almost all of them anti-Trump, have gotten permits to protest before, during and after the inauguration. Thousands of demonstrators also have vowed to shut down the inauguration, including by closing off security checkpoints along the inaugural parade route.

Where is HOME?

A good friend of mine shared a question posed by guitarist, Chris Wood on her Facebook page:

“Bob Dylan described eloquently how his music has been the quest to get home. Now as much as ever feels like a good time to ask you; what feels like home to you? Are you there already or do you still have a way to go?”

On the same day, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released a new song called “Castle on the Hill”. The song retraces the singer’s youth, returning to his former home and recalling his memories en route.

I grew up in a small rural town called Penrith in Cumbria, England. It’s a tourist town situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. I return periodically but I’ve realised over the years how my fond memories are stored in music rather than the place itself.

I consider Penrith to be my home but every time I return I feel more distant, more disconnected. Maybe what I search for is my youth – to remember Penrith as I did back then and feel the way the town made me feel then – but lately it seems empty, soulless. The only way I can get that feeling back is by listening to music that reminds me of when it was my home. That works, then I miss it, then it feels like home again.

When my mind traces back through all the places I’ve lived, they each have songs associated with the memories. In that sense, each place feels like home. There’s a nostalgic pull to every dwelling for different reasons and different songs. For some, scents can also trigger memories of places they consider home.

But where is home? Is it the house or town you grew up in or the house or town where you raised your family? Maybe it’s the place you felt most loved or perhaps the place you gave most love to. How does our heart identify home?

For many, home is more than a memory. For refugees, home is their country; for the street children in Brazil and India, home is wherever they feel safest.

So are we all constantly striving to find home? Do creative people, like Bob Dylan, find sanctuary in their work?

I’ve spent hours pondering an answer to Chris Wood’s question and feel no definitive place as my home. The house where I live now, and watched my family grow, is my home but Penrith is my home town. Maybe I am still on that quest to go home, but I fear that home was a moment in time…

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what you consider home and why, so please comment below.

Sephora Is Selling An Eyeshadow Named ‘Druggie’. Seriously.

There are moments when it’s important to marshal as much evidence as possible to back up an argument. And then there are moments like this.

Sephora is selling a new shade of eyeshadow called “Druggie.

The company describes the shade as “metallic purple with violet shift,” and it is part of Urban Decay’s “Afterdark” eyeshadow palette. Now, we get that fashion is an art form, even in a globally commodified context, and far be it for us to stomp on creative expression.

But by the time you have finished reading this article, it’s likely that somebody in the United States will have died of an opioid overdose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 people, many of them young, are dying every week. Every 15 minutes, a new dead body is turning up in an emergency room, making orphans of children, breaking the hearts of parents and grandparents, the scourge of an entire generation.

Responding to complaints, Sephora has apologized but has not said it will drop the name. “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. Please DM us for more information,” the company tweeted Friday in reply to a protest.

When reached by The Huffington Post, Sephora had this to say: “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. We would never seek to do that. The shade was in a limited edition palette and was not planned to be re-ordered.”

HuffPost has reached out to Urban Decay and is awaiting comment.

Ryan Hampton, a recovery advocate for Facing Addiction told HuffPost that, while the apology is “a step in the right direction, Sephora clearly needs an education on substance use disorders. The recovery community is standing at the ready, and it’s our hope that their CEO not only pulls this product immediately but joins the national fight to face addiction.”

Still, Urban Decay’s ‘Druggie’ eyeshadow points out a big problem in the fashion and beauty industries, which have long histories of glamorizing addiction, even in the midst of the nation’s drug epidemic.

Hampton told HuffPost that Sephora said it would be meeting next week to decide how to handle the situation.

In the meantime, here’s a petition to help nudge them in the right direction.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Across The U.S., Police Contracts Shield Officers From Scrutiny

By Reade Levinson

San Antonio, Texas, Jan 13 (Reuters) – In late 2013, a San Antonio police officer stood accused of handcuffing a woman in the rear of his police car and then raping her. The same officer had remained on the force despite prior sexual misconduct complaints and other brushes with the law.

So early in 2014, backed by the city council, City Manager Sheryl Sculley proposed reforms to thepolice union contract in the Texas city. She wanted to eliminate a clause that erased prior misconduct complaints from cops’ records, increase citizen participation in the complaint process, and end officers’ ability to forfeit vacation time rather than serve suspensions.

The San Antonio Police Officers Association’s response: It targeted Sculley with a $ 1 million advertising campaign, according to estimates by the manager’s office. The union ran full-page newspaper ads and placed billboards downtown claiming crime rates rose because she refused to fill open police positions. Police backers broadcast ads highlighting Sculley’s six-figure salary and created a Facebook page, Remove City Manager Sheryl Sculley.

“They were really trying to intimidate,” said Sculley. “I knew it would be one of the hardest things I would work on here in San Antonio.”

Mike Helle, the officers’ association president, said Sculley pitched the changes simply to ride a wave of protest over police. The contract ensures fair discipline, he said, and if anyone was on the attack, it was the manager. “Her tone was immediately aggressive,” he said.

In the end, after two years of bitter negotiations, the sides agreed to a contract capping salaries and benefits at rates manageable for the city. But it did not include Sculley’s disciplinary changes. “The bottom line is that we could not change the contract,” she said.

The episode is a telling snapshot of the power police unions flex across the United States, using political might to cement contracts that often provide a shield of protection to officers accused of misdeeds and erect barriers to residents complaining of abuse.

From city to city, union contracts have become just as crucial in governing departments as policemanuals and city charters. Yet those contracts are coming under scrutiny amid civil rights protests over alleged police abuses, including shootings of unarmed black subjects.

Reuters, examining the fine print of 82 police union contracts in large cities across the country, found a pattern of protections afforded the men and women in blue:

A majority of the contracts call for departments to erase disciplinary records, some after just six months, making it difficult to fire officers with a history of abuses. In 18 cities, suspensions are erased in three years or less. In Anchorage, Alaska, suspensions, demotions and disciplinary transfers are removed after two years.

Nearly half of the contracts allow officers accused of misconduct to access the entire investigative file – including witness statements, GPS readouts, photos, videos and notes from the internal investigation – before being interrogated.

Twenty cities, including San Antonio, allow officers accused of misconduct to forfeit sick leave or holiday and vacation time rather than serve suspensions.

Eighteen cities require an officer’s written consent before the department publicly releases documents involving prior discipline or internal investigations.

Contracts in 17 cities set time limits for citizens to file complaints about police officers – some as short as 30 days. Nine cities restrict anonymous complaints from being investigated.

Police supporters say the contract rules are common-sense protections.

“Our job isn’t to keep bad officers in this profession. Our job is to make sure that due process is given to the officers,” said Rick Weisman, director of labor services at the National Fraternal Order of Police. “If the agency’s got a case, make your case.”

But many law-enforcement veterans think the protections go too far.

“The balance has dramatically shifted to the creation of barriers to actual accountability that don’t serve the public good,” said Jonathan Smith, former chief of special litigation in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Over the last 40 years, cities have bargained away the power to discipline police officers, often in closed negotiation meetings with local unions. Historically, contracts covered salary, pensions and healthcare. Discipline was brought to the negotiating table in the 1980s, when cash-strapped cities gave more management control to unions rather than increase salaries.

“During recessions [the city] would give the union management rights in lieu of money,” said Robert Olson, chief inspector of the Garda Síochána Inspectorate in Ireland and former chief ofpolice in Minneapolis. “And when that happens, that’s when trouble starts.”

“We’re not talking about just one union contract,” he added. “We’re talking about incremental changes in contracts over years that cumulatively, suddenly, there’s all of these hoops, which makes it far more difficult for chiefs to sustain discipline.”

THE CASE IN COLUMBUS

Joseph Hines was in his junior year at Ohio State University studying agribusiness. On August 29, 2012, Hines and his two best friends were out celebrating the first day of their junior year. They were sitting on a bench joking about fantasy basketball when two police officers on bicycles pulled up and asked Hines for his ID, according to internal police documents and interviews with witnesses.

Hines said he didn’t have his ID. The male officer grabbed his arm, and Hines jerked it back. Then the female officer took out her handcuffs, and the two tackled him to the pavement.

A police car dashcam recorded Hines’ shouts. “Stop! Stop! Please!”

“Shut the f―- up!” an officer screamed. “Shut up! Get down!”

“Please, stop!” Hines cried. “I can’t breathe, stop!”

He lost consciousness, and then awoke on the sidewalk, surrounded now by at least 15 officers, with one eye swollen shut. Hines was hospitalized for three days, diagnosed with facial contusions, a concussion, mild brain damage and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, according to medical records he provided to Reuters.

Hines was charged with six crimes, including resisting arrest and underage drinking. Police contended he was drinking in public – a can of Four Loko alcohol was found nearby. Hines says the can wasn’t his, and the charges for open container and public intoxication were dropped.

Ultimately, he pleaded guilty only to littering and paid a $ 100 fine. “I wasn’t charged with assault,” Hines said. “My face didn’t match up to my charges.”

Department records show a history of misconduct complaints against the two Columbus officersinvolved, Thomas DeWitt and Debra Paxton.

Prior to this incident, citizens filed 40 complaint allegations against DeWitt and 14 against Paxton. Those numbers should have “raised eyebrows and raised questions,” said Norm Stamper, former chief of the Seattle Police Department and author of a book outlining police reforms.

The details of many of those cases are missing because Columbus files are routinely destroyed every four years. “We shred them in various cycles,” said Jonathan Schirg, the management analyst in charge of records retention in the Columbus Division of Police. The retention schedule is approved by the Records Commission, Ohio Historical Society and Auditory of State.

Wes Phillips, the attorney for both officers, declined to comment.

The officers were never suspended in the Hines case. The department began an administrative investigation into their “response to resistance” – a new term used by the Columbus Division ofPolice to describe police use of force. The investigating sergeant was “unable to resolve” the allegations because Hines declined to be interviewed, as instructed by his attorney, records show.

Mike Miller, Hines’ attorney, said he would advise any client not to talk to police in the midst of a case. “The police are the ones that brought these charges against him,” he said.

After interviews with 15 officers and two paramedics, police brass determined the misconduct allegations were unfounded. That ruling came as a jury in September 2015 found DeWitt used excessive force and awarded Hines $ 30,000 in damages for his injuries. Hines appealed the award, which did not cover his attorney’s fees, and the case is pending at the Sixth Circuit Court.

Like many police departments, Columbus has a procedure in place to identify patterns of behavior and recommend counseling, called the Employee Action Review System.

The union contract prohibits complaints deemed by the department to be unfounded from factoring into discipline. In the department’s view, there is no just cause to discipline without a proven allegation, Columbus Division of Police Chief Kimberley Jacobs said in an email.

The review committee recommended Officer Paxton be monitored and given remedial training after 13 investigations in six months were opened into her use of mace, records show. In July 2014, she took a 30-minute course in handcuffing techniques.

Since the review, the department has investigated eight additional incidents involving Paxton’s use of mace and force.

Another Columbus case shows how officers can build up mounting complaints and stay on the force – until even more serious events occur.

Last September, Columbus officer Bryan Mason shot and killed 13-year-old Tyre King, who was carrying a BB gun. Mason had been the subject of more than 60 investigations, including 25 incidents in which citizens required medical attention, and was involved in two additional fatal shootings in 2009 and 2012, according to internal police documents obtained by Reuters.

Mason has been moved to an investigative assignment and is no longer on patrol, according to a spokesperson for the department. His lawyer, Phillips, declined to comment on specifics but said: “Columbus is a very well trained police force.”

Jason Pappas, president of the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police, said the union contract does not skew investigations or limit accountability. “If every officer started getting disciplined or moved because somebody started filing complaints, hell, the whole neighborhood would start filing complaints,” he said.

CASES CLOSED

In 15 cities reviewed by Reuters, few citizen complaints were sustained by police internal review boards. In Tacoma, Washington, for instance, just 10 percent of 215 complaint allegations filed against police were sustained between January 2015 and March 2016.

Assistant Chief Kathy McAlpine said complaints are often not sustained for lack of independent witnesses. “It is the complainant’s word versus the officer,” she said.

In Chicago, a Reuters analysis of 1,000 civilian complaints sent to Internal Affairs in 2016 shows just one resulted in disciplinary action.

One Chicago officer, Raymond Piwnicki – the subject of reports by The Invisible Institute, a Chicago journalistic organization focused on civil rights – accumulated at least 89 misconduct allegations in his 18-year career, files reviewed by Reuters show. Of those, four were sustained and one of the four, fighting with another officer, resulted in punishment, complaint records and internal investigative files show.

In one sustained case in 2005, Piwnicki exchanged words with a couple as they boarded an elevator, telling the man, “Shut up, you f―-ing coon, you f―-ing cluck, I do whatever the f―- I want to,” according to a report by the Department’s Office of Professional Standards. The argument began after Piwnicki pushed the wife out of the way so he and a friend could board first, the OPS investigation found. The report said Piwnicki attempted to punch the man.

Piwnicki denied wrongdoing in a statement to OPS, but the department sustained all six allegations against him.

“Piwnicki has clearly exhibited a pattern of using profane and derogatory language in his contact with citizens,” an investigator wrote. In 2013, Piwnicki was promoted to detective. He declined comment.

In many cities, prior disciplinary cases simply disappear from the record, thanks to the contract.

Honolulu’s contract specifies “derogatory” materials in an employee’s file – including disciplinary records – be destroyed after four years. Files may be “temporarily withheld from destruction” if officers are involved in pending litigation, said Sarah Yoro, a Honolulu Police spokeswoman. “Files are normally shredded or burned,” she said.

In Baton Rouge, complaints of sexual misconduct or harassment are removed from an officer’s record and destroyed after five years. The department did not respond to interview requests.

Destroying data that could signal wider problems can hurt the police department as well as the public, said Smith, the former DOJ official. Officers who become involved in shootings or other serious violations frequently have faced less serious allegations in the past. By limiting the use of past complaints, he said, union contracts can render institutions unable to correct their own behavior.

Glendale, Arizona, with a population of more than a quarter million residents, is among nine cities where the union contract restricts anonymous complaints from being investigated.

“We want the complainant to come in,” said Justin Harris, a Glendale police officer and union representative. “There’s a form, and it lets the taxpayer know that if you’re knowingly and intentionally making a false statement, you could be prosecuted.”

Glendale police defend their other contract protections. Among them: Officers under investigation get to see video footage that isn’t made available to citizens. Incidents involving police use of force can be emotional, and looking at video footage can help officers refresh their memory, policesay.

“That way they know all the facts, there’s no witch hunting,” Harris said.

By contrast, he said, “You don’t want to let a witness review footage of something they may or may not have seen, because if they review that footage, then they’re going to come back and just tell you what they just saw. So that’s not an independent statement.”

In eight cities, contracts allow officers to refuse to testify before civilian oversight boards. In Las Vegas, the union contract requires a court order to access an employee’s file.

Detective Steve Grammas, president of the Las Vegas Police Protective Association, said the policy is “consistent with public and private sector employment practices.”

Some contracts afford second chances when officers are found to have alcohol in their system.

In Chicago, officers who are breathalyzed on the job and register a blood-alcohol content of 0.021 through 0.039 – close to the 0.05 cutoff for a driving-while-intoxicated citation in Illinois – are sent home and tested again the next day. “If the return-to-duty test reveals an alcohol level of .00, the Officer may return to duty and shall not be subject to discipline based on the initial test result,” the contract states.

Toledo is equally forgiving. “Any on-duty officer who has under a .04 BAC shall not be subject to discipline but will be required to go home,” the contract says. “This officer may utilize any accumulated compensatory or vacation time to cover their absence.”

Officer Daniel Wagner, president of the Toledo Police Patrolman’s Association, said the language was recently added “to be proactive in addressing a common problem seen in policing nationwide” involving officers and alcohol. But, he said, the force has not had to put the provision into action.

UNIQUE BENEFITS, PUBLIC BARRIERS

In Milwaukee, officers can be paid during disciplinary suspensions – a benefit not bestowed on other city workers. “It is recognized that financial losses are not typically borne by the offending member alone, but by his or her family as well,” the police contract states.

Officers are also paid during lengthy internal affairs investigations. One Milwaukee police officer, Sonthana Rajaphoumi, was on paid suspension for more than five months after being charged in April 2016 with three felony counts of causing mental harm to a child and soliciting prostitution. He allegedly offered $ 200 for sex with a 16-year-old girl and tried to court another 15-year-old girl. He was fired in October.

Rajaphoumi’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment.

A department spokesperson said officers stay on payroll until found guilty by the court system or an internal investigation, processes that can take years.

Columbus’ contract mandates that complaints be submitted in writing within 60 days of an incident. Beyond that, officers typically are not required to participate in the investigation, and their name doesn’t appear on the complaint. At least 25 allegations of misconduct, or nearly 5 percent of all complaints, were not investigated in Columbus due to the 60-day clause, a 2015 report said.

“It’s very difficult for a supervisor to investigate outside of 60 days,” said Jennifer Knight, commander of the Columbus Internal Affairs Bureau.

Like most union contracts, the Columbus agreement allows officers access to all investigative materials. If new evidence is discovered, officers can pause an interview, step out with their lawyer and review the material.

Complainants are not given the same access in the city, where a string of police-involved shootings has sparked citizen marches.

THE CASE IN SAN ANTONIO

In San Antonio, the case that helped spur the city manager to action involved officer Jackie Neal, arrested in November 2013 on charges he raped a woman in the rear seat of his police vehicle. Later that night, released from jail, Neal returned to the home where the woman was staying and was arrested again.

Three months earlier, the police chief found that Neal, supervisor of the department’s youth program, had had sex with a teenage girl participating in the program.

The chief suspended him for three days, but Neal never lost a dime in pay or a day off patrol: The union contract allowed him to serve the suspension using vacation days.

Helle, the union president, said he too wanted Neal off the force, viewing him at an outlier. “I told the chief, you need to watch this guy,” he said. Helle has a daughter, and he said Neal’s actions deeply troubled him.

Neal declined to comment.

Neal had two prior complaints of sexual misconduct, court documents show. A woman alleged he put his hands inside her panties, lifted up her shirt and felt her breasts during a routine traffic stop in November 2006. Neal was accused of digitally penetrating another woman in February 2007. Neither complaint was sustained by the department.

Police Chief William McManus declined interview requests. In a deposition in the civil case against Neal, McManus said he “had a stern conversation” with Neal after the sexual encounter with the teenager in the police youth program and felt confident allowing him to continue performing his duties unsupervised.

McManus said he did not see a connection between the teen sex incident and Neal’s prior complaints. “These incidents, to me, were not – not sexually related, but they were what I considered to be a very, very aggressive officer in trying to find drugs,” he said.

The officer had other brushes with the law. In February 2007, Neal’s stepdaughter called policeafter he allegedly punched a door and began throwing clothes and a suitcase. Two months later, Neal’s wife, Debbie, called 911 saying he was threatening to kill himself with a gun.

“He rarely raised his voice, but when he got mad it was scary,” said Debbie Neal, who divorced Neal in 2009 but defended him in court. “I’d never seen him like that.”

In November 2013, after the alleged rape in his police car, Neal pleaded no contest to improper sexual activity with a person in custody. He was fined $ 5,000 and sentenced to 14 months behind bars. As part of the plea, he agreed to surrender his officer certification.

Neal’s sentence was shortened by five months through a state program allowing credit for work and education.

In April 2015, San Antonio approved a $ 500,000 settlement with the victim.

Yet such cases are not enough to spur change. The city manager, Sculley, said the police union wouldn’t budge on her demand that it cede control over discipline, and city council leaders urged her to yield in order to settle a new contract.

“There is so much that still needs to be changed in the contract,” Sculley said. “I lost the political support of the council to continue to press on that issue.”

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

21 Beautiful Parenting Quotes From Barack And Michelle Obama

During their eight years in the White House, President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have shared powerful words about citizenship, community, health, history, religion, relationships and so much more.

But some of their best quotes have been about their most important job ― being parents to Malia and Sasha. As the United States prepares to bid farewell to our current POTUS and FLOTUS, we remember some of their standout quotes about parenting:

“For many of us, our fathers show us by the example they set the kind of people they want us to become. Whether biological, foster, or adoptive, they teach us through the encouragement they give, the questions they answer, the limits they set, and the strength they show in the face of difficulty and hardship.” ― Barack Obama, 2012

“With every word we utter, with every action we take, we know our kids are watching us. We as parents are their most important role models.” ― Michelle Obama, 2016

“Above all, children need our unconditional love — whether they succeed or make mistakes; when life is easy and when life is tough.” ― Barack Obama, 2011

“I love our daughters more than anything in the world ― more than life itself. And while that may not be the first thing that some folks want to hear from an Ivy-league-educated lawyer, it is truly who I am. So for me, being Mom-in-Chief is, and always will be, job number one.” ― Michelle Obama, 2015

“What I’ve realized is that life doesn’t count for much unless you’re willing to do your small part to leave our children — all of our children — a better world. Any fool can have a child. That doesn’t make you a father. It’s the courage to raise a child that makes you a father.” ― Barack Obama, 2008

“When a father puts in long hours at work, he’s praised for being dedicated and ambitious. But when a mother stays late at the office, she’s sometimes accused of being selfish, neglecting her kids.” ― Michelle Obama, 2016

“Every father bears a fundamental obligation to do right by their children.” Barack Obama, 2012

“It’s about leaving something better for our kids. That’s how we’ve always moved this country forward, by all of us coming together on behalf of our children, folks who volunteer to coach that team, to teach that Sunday school class, because they know it takes a village.” ― Michelle Obama, 2016

“It’s a wonderful thing if you are married and living in a home with your children, but don’t just sit in the house and watch ‘SportsCenter’ all weekend long. That’s why so many children are growing up in front of the television. As fathers and parents, we’ve got to spend more time with them, and help them with their homework, and replace the video game or the remote control with a book once in awhile. ― Barack Obama, 2008

“In the end, that’s what being a parent is all about — those precious moments with our children that fill us with pride and excitement for their future, the chances we have to set an example or offer a piece of advice, the opportunities to just be there and show them that we love them.” ― Barack Obama, 2011

“Our life before moving to Washington was filled with simple joys … Saturdays at soccer games, Sundays at grandma’s house … and a date night for Barack and me was either dinner or a movie, because as an exhausted mom, I couldn’t stay awake for both.” ― Michelle Obama, 2012

“I’m inspired by the love people have for their children. And I’m inspired by my own children, how full they make my heart. They make me want to work to make the world a little bit better. And they make me want to be a better man.” ― Barack Obama, 2008

“As fathers, we need to be involved in our children’s lives not just when it’s convenient or easy, and not just when they’re doing well — but when it’s difficult and thankless, and they’re struggling. That is when they need us most.” Barack Obama, 2009

“When I get up and work out, I’m working out just as much for my girls as I am for me, because I want them to see a mother who loves them dearly, who invests in them, but who also invests in herself. It’s just as much about letting them know as young women that it is okay to put yourself a little higher on your priority list.” ― Michelle Obama, 2012

“[P]ass along the value of empathy to our children. Not sympathy, but empathy ― the ability to stand in somebody else’s shoes; to look at the world through their eyes. Sometimes it’s so easy to get caught up in ‘us,’ that we forget about our obligations to one another. There’s a culture in our society that says remembering these obligations is somehow soft ― that we can’t show weakness, and so therefore we can’t show kindness. But our young boys and girls see that. They see when you are ignoring or mistreating your wife. They see when you are inconsiderate at home; or when you are distant; or when you are thinking only of yourself. And so it’s no surprise when we see that behavior in our schools or on our streets. That’s why we pass on the values of empathy and kindness to our children by living them. We need to show our kids that you’re not strong by putting other people down – you’re strong by lifting them up. That’s our responsibility as fathers.” ― Barack Obama, 2008

“It wasn’t so long ago that I was a working mom myself. And I know that sometimes, much as we all hate to admit it, it’s just easier to park the kids in front of the TV for a few hours, so we can pay the bills or do the laundry or just have some peace and quiet for a change.” ― Michelle Obama, 2011

“To Malia and Sasha and their friends, discrimination in any form against anyone doesn’t make sense. As president, and as a dad, that makes me proud.” Barack Obama, 2015

“So the next time we battle with our kids over those vegetables, or they refuse to join us for a walk to the park, the next time we struggle to change our schools or communities, we need to remind ourselves that parents everywhere are going through exactly the same thing. We have to remember that we’re all in this together. ” ― Michelle Obama, 2011

“All of us can encourage our children to turn off the video games and pick up a book. All of us can pack a healthy lunch for our son, or go outside and play ball with our daughter. And all of us can teach our children the difference between right and wrong, and show them through our own example the value in treating one another as we wish to be treated.” ― Barack Obama, 2011

“Michelle and I know that our first job, our first responsibility, is instilling a sense of learning, a sense of a love of learning in our kids. And so there are no shortcuts there; we have to do that job. And we can’t just blame teachers and schools if we’re not instilling that commitment, that dedication to learning, in our kids.” ― Barack Obama, 2011

“Malia and Sasha … Of all that I’ve done in my life, I’m most proud to be your dad.” ― Barack Obama, 2017

Boost Metabolism to Lose Weight

Regrettably, many people don’t understand the concept of metabolism and metabolic change. This, equally regrettably, as it is hardly their fault. There is so much information floating around out there, much of it over the ‘net or through a “friend of a friend who has a personal trainer”, that there’s bound to be some confusion and conflicting messages. Furthermore, many people (quite understandably) mistake their own weight gain and loss episodes as a matter of metabolic change. Sometimes this is true, and sometimes it isn’t. For example, as we will discuss in this book, there are scientific ways to increase the rate of metabolic change, and thus enable the body to burn more calories. Eating certain foods more frequently is one way to do this. Whereas eating the right foods is a real, proven weight loss method through increased metabolic change.

This Man Is Writing Ridiculously Hilarious Gay Porn About ‘Domald Tromp’

Author Chuck Tingle is at it again with his hilarious gay erotica that regularly makes light of the current social and political climate.

Tingle previously made waves with works like Pounded By The Gay Color-Changing Dress in response to #TheDress that broke the internet and Pounded By The Pound: Turned Gay By The Socioeconomic Implications of Britain Leaving The European Union in the aftermath of Brexit.

For his latest book, Tingle features a character that might seem more than vaguely familiar.

Behold: Domald Tromp Pounded In The Butt By The Handsome Russian T-Rex Who Also Peed On His Butt And Then Blackmailed Him With The Videos Of His Butt Getting Peed On.

In an email using highly unorthodox language and grammar, Tingle, who is 45 years old and lives in Billings, Montana, told The Huffington Post: “It is important to remember [the book] is about DOMALD TROMP… This is a notorious real estate man from a timeline very close to this one but he is a different scoundrel.”

The author, who told The Huffington Post he’s a “retired doctor of holistic massage” and who has 108 self-published books for sale on Amazon, says that the intent of all of his books is to “prove love.” He adds, “Every moment is so important even this one right now I would like us all to seize that and do something powerful with it.”

Tingle says he’s not worried about legal action from the notoriously litigious president-elect. “I do not write stories about Donald Trump, I write about DOMS TROMP or DONS TRUMP, who do not exist on this timeline,” he says. The author, who says his sexual orientation is “bud on bud,” also noted that, “I am very careful about my privacy as a doctor. I do not even upload my own books — they are uploaded by son’s online friend, so it would be hard to track me as [Chuck Tingle] — maybe like [Banksy].”

Tingle has written about a figure resembling the president-elect before in President Domald Loch Ness Tromp Pounds America’s Butt and we’re guessing he has more up he sleeve. Good thing, too. We need it now more than ever.
