NOTE: If your puppy destroys a Puppy Kong in a short period of time, it is probably too small. We recommend upsizing to a larger Puppy Kong. Not for unsupervised play. Precautions: Puppy Kong should not be given to puppies before they are weaned. If you have a multiple dog home, take extra care to keep large dogs away from smaller dogs’ toys.

Trump, Clinton: Racial Stalemate Or Unfair Fight

2016-08-27-1472317428-4602998-ObamaPhiladelphia2008.jpg

(Barack Obama, speaking of race, in Philadelphia, March 18, 2008)

In the midst of his first campaign for president, Barack Obama was forced to explain his long association with a pastor spotlighted for racially incendiary remarks from the pulpit of an African American church in Chicago.

“The anger is real,” Obama said then, speaking not only of the “memories of humiliation and doubt and fear” that the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s generation raised amid racial segregation still bear. He addressed “a similar anger” among white Americans who’ve worked hard yet “feel their dreams slipping away” only to see “an African American is getting an advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed…

“Opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense,” candidate Obama said in Philadelphia, in March 2008, with words that still apply near the close of his second term. “This is where we are right now. It’s a racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years. Contrary to the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naïve as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy – particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own.”

The president, his public job approval riding above 50 percent in his final year, will return to Philadelphia in September, this time campaigning for his intra-party rival in that 2008 campaign, Hillary Clinton, immersed now in countervailing accusations of bigotry and racism in a contest with Republican Donald Trump.

“From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia,” Clinton said in a multi-faceted assault on Trump’s lack of character or qualification for the nation’s highest office delivered this week in Reno. “He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties,” she said of “a man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the Internet.”

And with the hiring of campaign CEO Stephen Bannon, publisher of the breitbart.com site favored by the “Alt-Right” – which the Wall Street Journal describes as a mostly online movement that “rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity” – Clinton suggested that “the de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump campaign represents a landmark achievement for the Alt-Right. A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party.”

“It’s the oldest play in the Democratic playbook,” Trump complained in his own attempt at a prebuttal in Manchester, N.H., before Clinton’s address in Nevada. “When Democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument: ‘You’re racist, you’re racist, you’re racist.’ It’s a tired disgusting argument.”

For a couple of weeks now, in an attempt to convince moderate swing voters that he is not a racist, Trump has made an odd appeal to African American voters who tend to vote 9-1 Democratic in presidential contests: “What the Hell have you got to lose?” It’s Clinton, he contends, who views black Americans simply as votes to be won, and he argues that for generations “millions of African-American and Hispanic-American citizens… have been betrayed by Democratic policies.”

Yet this war of words is not merely another manifestation of the “racial stalemate we’ve been stuck in for years,” as Obama put it. Some contend that the reporting of the week’s cross-fire between the candidates – which continues on Twitter and will loom large in the Sunday morning talk shows – is actually purveying a “false equivalency.” The idea here is that Clinton actually possesses far more ammunition in her case against Trump than he holds in his claim that she’s “a bigot.”

And it’s no coincidence that Trump is launching his first appeal to minorities at a juncture in which Clinton has gained a double-digit lead in some national polls.

“I think Trump is fairly desperate at this point and to a certain extent has painted himself into a corner,” says Carl Tobias, professor of law at the University of Richmond. “His outreach to African Americans seems to ring hollow, and once Obama is out there talking, that is sure to help Clinton in a lot of ways, certainly with that constituency.”

In a contest dominated by two of the most unpopular nominees in the history of modern opinion polling, there may be little gain for either in a debate on racism.

“I think everybody all the way around is going to hold their noses and vote, which is unfortunate,” Tobias says. “I think people almost stop listening at this point. I don’t know where the high ground is, but nobody seems to be on it.”

Trump arrived at this fight with a history of questionable acts and remarks. In November 2014, the Twitter aficionado tweeted this about the president: “Sadly, because president Obama has done such a poor job as president, you won’t see another black president for generations!” Asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl at the time what he meant by that, Trump said: “He has set a very poor standard. I think that he has set a very low bar and I think it’s a shame for the African American people… And by the way, he has done nothing for African Americans.”

Before that, Trump was among the highest-profile and most vocal proponents of the rumor that Obama is not a naturally born American citizen. Clinton running mate Tim Kaine, campaigning on the campus of historically black Florida A&M University the day after the Trump-Clinton exchange over racism, said: “Donald Trump was a main guy behind the scurrilous, and I would say bigoted, notion that President Obama wasn’t even born in this country.”

The actual accusation of racism reached its highest volume in the campaign underway after Trump accused the federal judge handling a lawsuit alleging fraud at Trump University of bias because he’s “a Mexican” and Trump wants to build a border wall against illegal immigration. It was the Republican Party’s own House Speaker Paul Ryan who delivered the strongest rebuke of Trump’s remark about Judge Gonzalo Curiel, a Mexican-American born in Indiana who has fought Mexican drug cartels as a prosecutor. Ryan said: “Claiming a person can’t do their job is sort of the like the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

Trump also has seized upon some stray Clinton comments to make his case for bigotry. “Hillary Clinton needs to address the racist undertones of her 2008 campaign,” he tweeted to his 11 million followers on Friday, offering a video montage of news clippings. In one, Clinton is pictured on an old episode of NBC News’ “Meet the Press” delivering a speech in which she said: “Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act.” In that clip, it’s the late host Tim Russert who suggests to Clinton: “It’s as if you are minimizing, ‘I have a dream.’ It’s a nice sentiment, but it took a white president to get blacks to the mountaintop.” The comment goes unanswered by Clinton.

It was during her contest against Obama in the 2008 Democratic primaries that Clinton suggested that Obama is an eloquent speaker lacking a record of action and it’s proven political leaders who’ve brought about real change. “I would point to the fact that that Dr. King’s dream began to be realized when President Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done,” she said. “That dream became a reality, the power of that dream became real in people’s lives because we had a president who said we are going to do it and actually got it accomplished.”

Obama was forced to deny that his campaign was circulating the remark to rally black voters. “Senator Clinton made an unfortunate remark, an ill-advised remark, about King and Lyndon Johnson. I didn’t make the statement,” Obama told reporters. “I haven’t remarked on it, and she, I think, offended some folks who felt that somehow diminished King’s role in bringing about the Civil Rights Act. She is free to explain that, but the notion that somehow this is our doing is ludicrous.”

Trump is playing another remark attributed third-hand and without direct quotation to Bill Clinton. Two years after that 2008 campaign, in their book Game Change, John Heilemann and Mark Halperin reported about the former president attempting to convince Sen. Ted Kennedy to support Hillary Clinton. “Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.” In the years since, the unattributed comment has been repeated in news accounts as an alleged direct quote.

Then there is the business of the “super predators,” which Trump is replaying online. “How quickly people forget that Crooked Hillary called African-American youth SUPER PREDATORS’ – has she apologized?” Trump tweeted this week. In the 1990s, after President Clinton won passage of the Violent Crime Control Act, the first lady warned in a 1996 speech of “the kinds of kids that are called ‘super predators…’ no conscience, no empathy, we can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel.” In this year’s Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders took issue with the remark: “It was a racist term,” he said in their final debate, “and everybody knew it was a racist term.” Clinton later allowed: “I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today.”

“The Clinton’s are the real predators,” Trump has tweeted.

For her part, Clinton claims Trump has demeaned the African American community with his portrayal of black neighborhoods as “war zones.”

“He doesn’t see the success of black leaders in every field… the vibrancy of black-owned businesses… or the strength of the black church,” she said in Reno. “He doesn’t see the excellence of historically black colleges and universities or the pride of black parents watching their children thrive…And he certainly doesn’t have any solutions to take on the reality of systemic racism and create more equity and opportunity in communities of color.”

She has reached far back into the billionaire’s own business career to portray a record of racism. “When Trump was getting his start in business, he was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent apartments to black and Latino tenants,” she said. “Their applications would be marked with a “C” – ”C” for “colored” – and then rejected.”

The New York Times reports that the legacy of discrimination in Trump housing developments started with the developer’s father. In the 1960s, as Civil Rights legislation was advancing in Washington, the Times reports: “Over the next decade, as Donald Trump assumed an increasingly prominent role in the business, the company’s practice of turning away potential black tenants was painstakingly documented by activists and organizations that viewed equal housing as the next frontier in the civil rights struggle. The Justice Department undertook its own investigation and, in 1973, sued Trump Management for discriminating against blacks. Both Fred Trump, the company’s chairman, and Donald Trump, its president, were named as defendants. “Absolutely ridiculous,” the son said.

“When it was over,” The Times reports today, “Mr. Trump declared victory, emphasizing that the consent decree he ultimately signed did not include an admission of guilt.” But the paper’s investigation – ”drawing on decades-old files from the New York City Commission on Human Rights, internal Justice Department records, court documents and interviews with tenants, civil rights activists and prosecutors – uncovered a long history of racial bias at his family’s properties, in New York and beyond.”

“It takes a lot of nerve to ask people he’s ignored and mistreated for decades, ‘What do you have to lose?'” Clinton said this week. “The answer is everything!”

Clinton went on to enumerate the support Trump has attracted from white nationalists such as David Duke, whose backing Trump took some time to disavow. She spoke of Trump’s plans for a religious test for Muslims entering the United States – a requirement to disavow Sharia law. “Under Donald Trump, America would distinguish itself as the only country in the world to impose a religious test at the border,” she said. “Come to think of it, there actually may be one place that does that. It’s the so-called Islamic State.”

And finally, Clinton says, Trump’s campaign is being run by the publisher of a platform, Breitbart, which the Southern Poverty Law Center describes as embracing “ideas on the extremist fringe of the conservative right. Racist ideas. Race-baiting ideas. Anti-Muslim and anti-Immigrant ideas – all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the ‘Alt-Right.'”

“There’s an old Mexican proverb that says, ‘Tell me with whom you walk, and I will tell you who you are,” Clinton said. “We know who Trump is. A few words on a teleprompter won’t change that. He says he wants to ‘make America great again,’ but his real message remains ‘Make America hate again.”‘

Obama, who plans to campaign for Clinton in Philadelphia on Sept. 13, went there in March 2008 to disavow the comments of a pastor he’d known for years – while standing by the man himself and offering a social context for his sentiments.

This time, Obama plans to speak of Clinton’s ideas for improving the economy. But his words from 2008 still resonate today.

“Race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now,” he said then. “We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.”

Ironically, Obama in 2008 took a turn at describing the very electorate to whom Trump has appealed in his own campaign for president this year:

“Most working- and middle-class white Americans don’t feel that they have been particularly privileged by their race,” Obama said then. “Their experience is the immigrant experience – as far as they’re concerned, no one handed them anything. They built it from scratch. They’ve worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pensions dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and they feel their dreams slipping away…

“Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze – a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many,” Obama said in Philadelphia. “And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns – this too widens the racial divide and blocks the path to understanding.”

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Here’s What Parents Of Kids With Life-Threatening Allergies Think Of The EpiPen Price Increases

Jennifer DiMercurio’s 7-year-old son, Liam, relies on the EpiPen, an auto injector used to treat anaphylactic shock, to save his life in the case of a severe allergic reaction. The device delivers a dose of epinephrine that’s worth about $ 1. But over the past nine years, Mylan, the pharmaceutical company which makes the EpiPen, has increased the price of the patented injecting device from $ 100 to $ 600.

That increase put the DiMercurios in a bind. In January 2015, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job that didn’t include health insurance. The family turned to the private market, where they found a plan that would cover Liam and Jennifer, who had developed a Latex allergy ― but it had a hefty deductible. So on two occasions, after using up their stash to save each others’ lives, the family had to borrow funds from relatives to replace their EpiPens.

This summer, DiMercurio’s husband started a new job ― one that came with good health insurance. But the family couldn’t afford to buy the year’s EpiPens until the new insurance kicked in.

So for four months, they had to rely on expired models.

“I was scared to take my son out, especially as summer was coming ― even at the grocery store I’d be more worried and more on alert because I’ll be afraid,” DiMercurio said. “Especially having to use them myself I’ve seen now how important it is to use it quickly and how fast it happens, and you don’t know if your pen is going to work because it’s expired.”

Presidential candidates, politicians and the press have spent the past week slamming Mylan for the price increases. Since no rival generic products have Food and Drug Administration approval, Mylan has an almost complete monopoly. Mylan’s CEO Heather Bresch, who is the daughter of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), announced Thursday that the company would not cut the price of the injectors, but would increase the maximum it would offer to families in its copay assistance program from $ 100 to $ 300.

Parents of children with life-threatening allergies are still worried.

“So many of us are wondering if we’re going to be able to pay our mortgage if we pay for the pens,” DiMercurio said. “It’s bad enough when kids’ lives are lost just because they didn’t use an EpiPen quickly enough, but to not have it for a financial reason is despicable. It’s all we have and Mylan monopolized the market.”

FINANCIAL SACRIFICE

Aleasa Word, a working single mom in Atlanta, started saving last September to buy enough EpiPens for her two kids with food allergies to make it through the school year. The packs expire, so they need to be replaced each year, even if they aren’t used. Even with her insurance, a two-pack of EpiPens (they’re only sold in sets of two) costs her about $ 600, and she needs four packs to cover both her children ― one for each of them to carry, and one for each of them to have at school.

That comes out to a total of $ 2,400.

“I am willing to sacrifice whatever I need to sacrifice to get my children their medication,” Word said. “EpiPen is not optional in my house. I can’t not have it.”

Joy Velozo, a mother from Massachusetts, said she worries about the impact the price increase has on families that can no longer afford them. Her son, who will be 12 at the end of the month, is allergic to all nuts, eggs and shellfish. He has been home-schooled since last year in part because his local school would not guarantee that he would not be exposed to allergens in the upper classes, where students switch desks and classrooms throughout the day.

“I can’t imagine having to pay full price to have four sets of EpiPens to know he was covered in every situation,” she said.

Julianne DeNicola’s 7-year-old son, Joseph, died after he came into contact with pizza oil that had touched cheese ― enough to set off his extreme dairy allergy. Although his father administered an EpiPen shortly after his reaction, Joseph didn’t get the drug fast enough.

“This isn’t just an over-the-counter product,” DeNicola said. “This is Russian Roulette. You can’t put a price tag on life.”

DeNicola said she has talked to other parents who say they have been forced to choose between a mortgage payment, putting aside money for college tuition, or buying a new set of EpiPens.

RISING RISKS

Other parents told HuffPost they’d heard of families splitting packs ― one EpiPen for home, one to carry ― as the cost of EpiPens has risen. This is dangerous. EpiPens are sold in packs of two in case someone needs more than one dose or the first EpiPen fails to deploy due to user error.

The possibility that more families could end up splitting the EpiPen packs terrifies Georgina Cornago Cipriano. She became an food allergy activist after her 14-year-old son, Giovanni, accidentally ingested something with peanuts and died.

“It’s becoming a luxury to be able to have an EpiPen. There are people that have multiple children with food allergies ― how can you afford them?” Cipriano asked. “You have to have more than one set. And you have to have two everywhere you go ― you never know if the first one could malfunction. You don’t know if the first one is going to be enough.”

When asked about families splitting the packs, DiMercurio said that she once had to use two of the EpiPens at the same time on her own son to get his reaction under control. But she’s had to rely on expired pens herself, so she understands the inclination to cut corners for cost.

THE NECESSITY FOR ACCESS

In September 2013, Josephine Espinosa’s 13-year-old son Cameron was bitten by a swarm of fire ants during a football huddle in Corpus Christi, Texas. He’d had no previous allergy issues ― much like 25 percent of children who suffer their first allergic reaction in school ― but the mix of ant bites and adrenaline caused a severe allergic reaction that killed him.

The school did not have an EpiPen on hand, which Josephine believes could have saved his life.

“Once I found out an EpiPen could have saved my son, I knew I had to do something so that other parents don’t have to go through what we go through every day,” Espinosa said.

Last summer, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) signed Senate Bill 66, known as the Cameron Espinosa Act, into law, which requires public and charter schools in Texas to stock EpiPens and train staff on how to use them. Last school year was the first the law went into effect.

“It does give me a little peace of mind that [this is the law in Texas],” Espinosa said. “This is a nightmare, every day is a struggle. No parent should have to go through that.”

Eleven states in the country require all schools to carry EpiPens. The law in Texas does not apply to private schools.

Many emergency vehicles do not carry EpiPens or epinephrine on board. And many basic emergency medical technicians do not have access or may not be allowed to administer anything other than the patient’s own EpiPen, according to Food Allergy Research & Education, a nonprofit that advocates for the 15 million Americans who suffer from food allergies.

THE FEAR NEVER GOES AWAY

Parents of children with food allergies wonder every day if they’re going to get a phone call saying their child is having a life-threatening reaction, Velozo said.

The parents of those who have lost a child “are like the salespeople for EpiPens,” DeNicola said. “We’re the advocates on why they need to have it.”

“We walk on land mines every single day,” said Word, who organizes Love Remembers Day, an annual commemoration for those who have lost a loved one to food-induced anaphylaxis.

“I hate to get the phone call, I hate to get the emails,” she said. “And I don’t want to have a conversation on Love Remembers Day, and it’s because someone couldn’t afford their EpiPen.”

Shanghai in the 1980’s. A German man drowns his sorrows in the Seaman’s Mission bar and chats to Jim and Carmen. The day after tomorrow they will take the Trans-Siberian Express train from Beijing to Berlin. They are excited, but their new German friend has some words of warning for them. Their food, books and other valuables will be confiscated by the over-zealous border guards who board the train at various points along the way through the wilderness of Mongolian and Siberia. It is almost impossible to avoid. Jim however, takes this as a challenge and devises an ingenious method of deception. On the train, other passengers can be heard remonstrating with the guards, but to no avail. Two Americans are arrested and removed from the train. Miraculously though, Jim’s scheme works. The result, however is a matter of personal humiliation for Jim in front of his girlfriend.

Trump’s Heart Of Darkness

On August 17th, Donald Trump once again shook up his campaign. While there were early indications that Trump would “soften” his image, these were refuted by the August 19th release of his first general election campaign ad “Two Americas: Immigration”. This TV ad stems from the same darkness that fueled Trump’s acceptance speech: bigotry and hate.

Trump’s ad packs four lies into 30 seconds. It begins with a familiar Trump assertion: “In Hillary Clinton’s American the system stays rigged against Americans.” (It goes on to proclaim that immigrants are gaming the system.) Politifact notes that Trump has often claimed “the US election system is rigged.” It rates these claims totally false (“Pants on Fire”). More specifically, The Dallas Morning News reported that immigration has “slowed sharply” and illegal immigration “is near record lows.”

Trump’s next assertion is that “Syrian refugees flood in.” According to the New York Times the US plans to accept 10,000 Syrian refugees this year but as of the end of April had only take 1726. While Donald Trump asserts, “there is no system to vet Syrian refugees,” Politifact states this is another Trump lie; the process takes one to two years. Most of those accepted have been women and children.

The ad follows with a three-part assertion: “Illegal immigrants convicted of committing crimes get to stay, collecting Social Security benefits, skipping the line.” Huffington Post acknowledges that “Some people convicted of crimes considered minor are able to avoid deportation, and others stay because their home countries won’t take them back.” However, the number of these cases pales in comparison to the deportations – 460,000 in fiscal 2015.

The most controversial part of the Trump ad is the assertion that illegal immigrants get to collect social security benefits. The Washington Post gives this claim “four Pinocchio’s” for extreme falsehood. Most undocumented immigrants pay into Social Security but receive no benefits.

The reference that Trump gives for his “illegal immigrants get to collect social security benefits” assertion is an April paper by The Center for Immigration Studies a right-wing anti-immigration organization. MSNBC commentator Rachel Maddow reported:

The Center for Immigration Studies, for example, will distribute essays from Holocaust deniers every now and again… They keep finding themselves digesting and sending around work by white nationalists… You slip back into that really fast when you’re circulating arguments like, “the native ethnic stock that founded and built the U.S. is systematically being replaced through massive third world immigration.”

That’s right. In his first ad, Trump cites a racist organization.

The ad’s fourth assertion is “[Under Hillary Clinton] our border [would be] open.” In her web site Clinton calls for a continuation of the Obama border-security, “Hillary will focus resources on detaining and deporting those individuals who pose a violent threat to public safety, and ensure refugees who seek asylum in the U.S. have a fair chance to tell their stories.” (Unlike Trump, Clinton is for “comprehensive immigration reform.”) Factcheck.org says the Trump ad, “misleads the viewer.”

In her August 25th Reno speech, Hillary Clinton addressed Trump’s hateful rhetoric. “Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. He is taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over the Republican Party.” “This is not Republicanism as we have know it. These are race-baiting ideas, anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant ideas, anti-woman — all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the ‘Alt-Right.'” “We need good debates. But we need to do it in a respectful way, not finger pointing and blaming and stirring up this bigotry and prejudice.”

Hillary Clinton observed that Trump’s real campaign slogan is, “Make America hate again.”

30 Simple Habits That Promote Happiness and Mental Strength

What have you tried for 30 days that changed everything? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Mike Leary, Psychotherapist in private practice, on Quora:

Mental happiness in ninety days with 30 habits everyone should practice

This is what you are fighting to create change in your life–the Newtonian three laws of motion. The whole universe wants to keep you traveling in the way you have been.

First law: Inertia

Something will continue to stay the same unless it's pushed, and when it is, it will keep going that way unless something else changes it again. Therefore an object at rest will remain sitting there until influenced by a destabilizing force. Then it will keep going in that new direction, traveling at the same speed in that particular direction unless it is acted upon by a new and unbalancing force. So if you are set in your ways, you'll keep doing the same thing unless something influences you enough to the point where you can't keep the same mindset.

Second Law: Impact

When something is pushed, it depends on how powerful that push is and then it will go in the direction it was pushed. Where it goes is related to which direction and how hard it was hit. So when someone tells you something powerful, the tendency is to go in that direction.

Third law: Reaction

For every action that's made, there is an equal action that pushes in the opposite direction and with the same amount of force. So when someone pushes you, you want to push back. When someone pulls you, you want to pull back. We naturally fight destabilizing forces, even if they are good for us.

It takes time to turn your life in a new direction. I used to have a toy gyroscope in my office. I'd spin it, hand it to a patient, and then have them try to change the direction. They could feel the resistance. The whole universe is fighting that change. That momentum is going in one direction. But if you stay with it, it resets in the new position and then will resist any further new changes. You have to impact it with enough energy that the momentum overcomes the resistance. It's the same with you. If you do a new behavior, you'll pick up some inertia and it will eventually normalize into a habit, which then takes minimal energy.

30 days of consistent behavior is known to have an impact. Now the truth is, I'm more in favor of ninety days rather than thirty. It generally takes six weeks to effectively learn a new habit. I've had much more long-term success with the extra two weeks. All of these changes imply some sort of risk, especially if you aren't already doing them. They will threaten your status quo inside and out. The laws of motion will be experienced as you experiment. Here is a list of ones I have, and/or I've had patients do over the years, in no particular order:

1. I Choose.

To bring home how every motion you do is your choice, start saying it. "I choose to get up", "I choose to go to the door", "I choose to open it", "I choose to walk out", "I choose to close it". Etc. As stupid as that sounds, it brings it home how much we truly are deciding everything we do.

Benefit: No one makes you do anything. They especially cannot make you miserable nor happy but they sure can influence you. You choose what you do, what you emote and what you believe. You can choose to be happy where your at instead of waiting for it to someday, maybe show up.

2. Stop being negative/start being positive.

You are what you think. This is a projective test. Is the glass half full or empty? Your choice. Look for the positive payoff in every situation. Somebody is getting a positive payoff in every event. You can choose to get one too. Task yourself with it. Many people use the simple rubber band on wrist to snap as a reminder- "I can change my mind!" Then you start seeing gratitude rather than defeat.

Benefit: It's a huge thing to realize you control your own attitude and it isn't really linked to other people's beliefs. Positive thinking gives you more energy and clear-headedness to do things.

3. Project happy.

People read you. Your face tells them your energy level and your relationship with life. Just smiling helps your attitude show through. Say hello to everyone. Ask how other people lives are going. Meet people, especially strangers. Show them you are curious about their journey so far and how it impacts on them. What has made a difference in their life? What have they discovered through their suffering and decisions? People like to be around others who are interested in them. It makes people feel you like them and they belong.

Benefit: Other people react positively to you and give you back positive too. They are more likely willing to help you. When you listen intently to their story, people feel safe. They'll risk taking you down to the protected emotions of level three deep inside themselves. That creates intimacy and a bond of trust. It's empowering.

4. Eat right / bless the food.

All diets work for somebody. Just pick one and follow it. Quit eating "junk" food. It's formulated to trigger cravings. They aren't in it to provide health; it's a business designed to use people for profit. Don't eat until full, you don't need it. You only need enough energy to get to the next service station, which is typically four to six hours away. Carrying security-fuel around in case you might run out is a distortion – a false belief. It's hard on every system in your body but especially suspension and plumbing.

In addition, if you become aware that a plant or animal gave its life so you could experience yours tomorrow, be grateful. Say a prayer/meditation/slogan of gratefulness every meal. Everything you eat becomes you.

Benefit: Without health, there is nothing. Eating properly allows your body to tune itself naturally. All those years of evolution work with the tools you give them. It boosts energy, allows a better attitude, gives more motivation, combats disease, and basically you get to live longer. By blessing your ingestion of other life forms, you will feel much more aware of your own body and appreciate the circle of life.

5. Exercise.

This is your physical health. These bodies are on loan; they all get factory recalls. Everything in life either grows or deteriorates. You take care of it and it can last a hundred years. That means you need to move the energy through it regularly to keep it tuned up. Stagnating energy becomes putrid. Do some load-bearing exercise. Learning to move energy through your system aerobically supercharges and fine tunes all the body's systems. My friend, a federal judge who was sharp as a tack, worked on the bench when he was over a hundred and still took the stairs.

Benefit: Long and active life with the health to do things. You will feel better and think more clearly. For many people it's a moving meditation so they can integrate mentally while their body is in a routine dynamic. You get to feel alive by touching it.

6. Sleep.

I have so many patients with sleep issues. Not sleeping enough exacerbates their life issues. They can't seem to turn off the critical harangue or the anxious problem solver in their mind. So many are consuming large quantities of drugs or alcohol in order to poison themselves enough so that they don't hear it and can pass out. That doesn't produce REM sleep.

Benefit: Learning how to shift your mind out of work mode and choosing to get off the clock is crucial for good health. Emotions then are not hypersensitive to any slight during your daytime shift where they are corrupting your life. You get to be relaxed and feel clear-headed and in control of yourself. Also your body repairs itself mentally and physically when REM sleep is functioning.

7. Hygiene.

Clean your teeth and your body, and wear deodorant, flush the toilet, and wash your hands. It is amazing how many people didn't learn proper hygienic habits. Even more how many don't wash after using the toilet. But there are people who have run others out of places with their BO or bad breath.

Benefit: Your hygiene doesn't become a matter of conversation, especially behind your back. But also, your body will thank you. You don't create an environment where bacteria are setting up housekeeping on you.

8. Electronic blackout.

Get bored. Choose a set number of hours for electronics. TV / videos / games / cell phones all consume our lives. We all have a limited amount of time on earth. Are you getting your life's worth? Those things are made by other people, not you. Entertainment junkies are just hedonistic consumers. There is no pride that comes from them.

Benefit: Being bored is seemingly crucial for coming up with new ideas. Most people then figure out some other typically creative way to spend their time. They also have something to show for it and convert it into pride. That then links to one's life having value.

9. Write or journal.

Reflecting on what I have experienced allows me to better understand camera two (the other's perspective) and camera three (the objective perspective). The words on paper hold still and say the same thing over and over unless changed. Seeing them in print often helps sort what happened and can help the person get a wisdom credit.

Writing for just five minutes will make a difference. The 5 Minute Journal.

Benefit: Gives better feedback to make improvements in future decisions. It leaves a legacy of one's life and allows you to see the changes that have taken place. I often have women patients write a journal as they go through the self-help book 'Women as Winners." That way when they finish and we go over it together, they themselves can see their own growth. They can wise up faster by doubling the perspectives for the same event.

10. Read and educate yourself.

Books condense time, give us information, and plant the seeds of wisdom. We learn things we never would have known. We can have vicarious experiences, which allow us to have more experiences than we would have in our own restricted lives.

Benefit: Books can change you … I was working at Boeing in CNC maintenance when I started reading Will Durant's Story of Philosophy. It influenced my life and set me on a whole different trajectory.

11. Enjoy your job.

Liking your job and having a good attitude will generally mean it will go well. Say out loud I am a [job descriptor] and I [feeling] it! I've had patients go out in the country and pretend they are a lion on the Serengeti and roar until they ran out of breath.

Benefit: You get stronger. Time goes by quicker. By being happier, you'll be both more productive and successful. Believing in who you are will help you identify if the job is fulfilling or not. It will give you confidence and self-esteem.

12. Have a compelling future.

If you don't know where you're going, how will you know if you get there?

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.

"I don't much care where-" said Alice.

"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Chapter 6).

Benefit: Imagining a future that is bright (visualized) drives a passion to create. It gives focus and direction to ones life. It provides a sense of purpose and meaning for staying alive.

13. Delay gratification.

Resist the temptation for immediate rewards and wait for a later, better one. It's one of the most effective personal traits of successful people. Understanding how delaying quick payoffs allows for awareness and maturation.

Benefit: Better health, finances, education, and success in general. Being better educated tends to earn people higher incomes. Delayers are less likely to have a drug or alcohol addiction or to be incarcerated.

14. Housekeeping.

Clean your house. Take out the trash and empty it. Organize your storage and make your bed. Your surroundings typically reflect your inner self. Sloppy house equals sloppy life. The number of patients I see whose day goes poorly when they don't make their beds has been an eye-opener. Something about sloughing off that decision did something to them. I've lived in group homes where not taking out the trash was reflected in their approach to life.

Benefit: A smooth and hassle-free environment. Discipline starts at the crack of dawn with the first choice of the day and sets the style and attitude for the rest of it. Clean and organized lifestyle translates into a clean and organized mind.

15. Record keeping.

Files of your life. Pay stubs, receipts, warranties, birth certificates, medical records, insurance forms, marriage license, and a blizzard of papers. Have a place for them so you touch them once when they come home and once to get them to their holding area. Then only once more when you deal with it and then file it in a known marked storage area.

Benefit: No wasted time and certainly no frustration when trying to locate it later; it's right where you put it. You get to be aware of what your life is really doing by keeping track of it. Paper trails allow for course corrections before calamities.

16. Discipline.

Discipline is a personal orientation toward a way of life where one tries to be on time and live in a systematic way. It's one of the factors people judge you by. The beginning of discipline is always scheduling. Listing out what is expected will be done each day as a guide. I've had people start in the morning by making their beds.

Benefit: Earn the virtues of being focused, staying healthy, and basically avoiding problems. These people have self-control, get things done, and are likely to be happy.

17. Paying bills.

Everybody owes. Everybody pays bills. Set yours up so you pay your bills off and on time. All those debts keep you from being honest about what it takes. The banks are in it for THEIR profit, not yours. And pay your taxes without griping. It's the privilege of living where you do. They are not a surprise unless you were not on top of your spending habits. Whining keeps you stuck in fairyland. I have known so many people who, when they got a break or windfall, instead of paying off their debts, used it to buy things they had their eye on, which many times created even more debt.

Benefit: Not compounding debt. It's freeing up money to have it work for you instead of you working for others. Feelings of control instead of anxiety. Actually owning rather than just paying someone else.

18. Save money.

Learn finances. Educate yourself on how money makes money. You can't have it work for you if you keep giving it away. Learn what amortization scales are, how stocks work, why you are charged percentages. How debt accumulates. Watch Oprah on how to get rich on a poor man's salary. How to become Rich!!! on Oprah.

Benefit: Debt-free and savings for a worry-free future. Produces the freedom to choose what you want in your life.

19. Have a hobby.

Be creative; make things that didn't exist before. Figure out the puzzles and bring them to life. Music, art, cooking, writing, gardening, dancing, sewing, woodworking, electronics, and on and on with wonderful things.

Benefit: It creates pride (I did it myself). Hobbies allow you to get off the clock and clear your mind. They can provide a sense of purpose and focus. They also allow you to connect with like-minded people.

20. Help a charity.

Give back to society. None of us got here by ourselves. It's appreciating those who are less fortunate by alleviating or reducing someone else's misery.

Benefit: Giving evokes gratitude. It creates compassion, humility, and joy. Research found that providing money to someone else lifted the giver's happiness more than spending it on themselves, and the giving itself has been shown to increase health benefits in people with chronic illness. In addition, your generosity is likely to be rewarded by others down the line. And it can spur a ripple effect of generosity throughout a community by being contagious.

21. Immerse yourself in society.

Meet people. Belong to the society in which you find yourself. Affiliation as a primary emotion is critical for both our mental and physical health. The pain of social rejection follows us like a cloud for years if not lifetimes. Most all of the public mass shootings seem to be from people who did not feel accepted by society.

Benefit: Promotes cooperation and social connection. A cohesive society in which people help each other is healthier than ones that are fragmented. Researchers provided evidence that social ties and increased contact with family and friends are associated with a lower risk of disease and even death.

22. Cultivate friends.

Find friends. Go out to lunch with them. Call up people you haven't talked with for years and visit. Investigate a club or join a church. Friends are essential for your health. According to scientific research, loneliness and isolation can reduce your life span more than obesity. Many of us need friends to validate our attributes. We need to know we are desirable.

Benefit: Spending time with friends adds years to your life. Research has shown it boosts your immune system while lowering blood pressure, which in turn decreases the probability of stroke. Having interactions with people we care about can even reduce pain, especially if they kiss our boo-boos.

23. Create Intimacy.

This is our desire to be loved unconditionally. To risk sharing your deepest darkest secrets and dreams with another person can feel therapeutic, especially when you finally find someone you trust enough to do it with. We all need to feel desirable, that somebody else wants us.

Benefit: People with partners feel accepted and appreciated with a sense of belonging and being cared about. They get more done while experiencing less stress and strain than those who must go it alone. This promotes a kind of honesty for the self and others. People get a spring in their step, have a zest for life, and are happy.

24. Commitment.

We talk of committing to another person. That's important but not the real commitment. The real commitment is to our own integrity. Commit to honesty and quit deceiving. Say the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. So many of us were taught to fudge what really happened. It creates isolation. People live in their heads.

Benefit: Your integrity strengthens every dynamic you face as a human. Purpose, relationships, success, accomplishments, spirituality, integration, and character grows dramatically.

25. Be thoughtful.

Do one small thing for someone. Help the existence of someone else. As Thoreau said, "Most people live lives of quiet desperation." Be especially kind to those less fortunate. We all need to be seen by others to experience belonging. That's part of the grief of homelessness; they turn into invisible people. They don't belong anymore and so the loss can take them quickly to despair.

Benefit: You get to experience joy, the spiritual side of happiness. Giving positive energy away so another person can be happy feeds yours. Thoughtfulness changes our mindset and creates new neuro-pathways. We belong by helping them belong.

26. Count your blessings.

Just write down three things from the past 24 hours that you're grateful for — friends, family, events, the fact that you're alive, anything. Gratitude generally comes from turning a loss into a benefit. It's looking at it and realizing that to grow, we have to let go of something. Getting stuck in our losses feeds misery and prevents maturation and growth.

Benefit: We see gratitude as a virtue. Real spirituality tends to give rise to grateful behavior. Gratitude is strongly correlated with optimism, which makes us nicer, more trusting, more social, and more appreciative.

27. Attend some kind of challenging growth group.

AA, EA, OA, grief group, consciousness raising, or some kind of support group that provides a time where you get to tell your story and you listen to others. People can unburden themselves in a supportive and generally loving atmosphere. Isolation is one of the big problems in society, especially with social media now. People hide behind a blizzard of words.

Benefit: Debriefing has a stunningly positive affect on people. All that isolation in one's head suddenly disappears when people truly are able to be honest and allow others to see them. They discover they are less alone and they can inspire other group members. The others can offer a different perspective on your problems. It releases some of the pent-up stress by clarifying and getting under what the true issues are. Sponsors can help you to not keep fooling yourself.

28. Spiritual guide.

Find a Shaman, Priest, Mullah, Cleric, Rabbi, Sage, or spiritual mentor. Someone who gives guidance in life's puzzles of being. A person who uses compassion, not rules; joy, not anger; kindness, not criticism; and faith, not certainty. They consider personal growth and fulfillment as a central goal. They help you discover your place in the universe. Spirituality can be considered to be a path toward self-actualization.

Benefit: They teach you how to center and savor life experiences. They encourage people to be optimistic and positive. They tend to demonstrate graciousness and compassion. They allow positive relationships, creating high self-esteem.

29. Safe house.

It's the sanctuary of the heart. Imagine a place that is peaceful and secure with nature's beauty and your dream house on it. Put yourself there and explore it. Then go fetch your ghost child, take them there, and make sure they're safe. Have a room set up where the child can explore and play and be a kid with no criticism. Go visit and make sure they're never alone or scared again. You can tell at what age people are emotionally stuck by the level of ridiculousness, whether it's anger or sneaking around.

Benefit: Produces a sanctum for the inner child where it is safe and secure. Then it doesn't act out in your adult life.

30. Meditate or practice mindfulness.

Pay attention; Buddha consciousness is about waking up and paying attention to what's real. Evaluate each day. Make it interactive. Instead of blanking out or praying to a deity, interact with one. Visualize it happening. Do this for five minutes when you first get up and five minutes just before you drop off to sleep.

Benefit: You will start changing your own mental dynamics, feeling more integrated and empowered. Blood pressure goes down. Some people alter their physical dynamics by using imagination. Whatever we imagine is true, our bodies act as if it's true.

. . .

So all these are aspects of people who got their lives together. You don't do them all at once. In my forty years of being a professional therapist, especially in addictions, I've never had a success with making a change and quitting nicotine at the same time. It's too hard. I've gotten people off heroin, cocaine, meth, marijuana, alcohol, and overeating but not if they've tried to quit smoking at the same time. Pick your battles.

Pick one to commit to and start. Get your routine established and practice every day. Post them so you can see your progress. You don't have to complete each one before starting on another, but don't overload yourself.

Each of these have nuances that get discovered along the way. Every person has to customize the particular events to their specific learning style and willingness to work the program. Some will be more powerful than others, but all have caused relief for certain aspects of dysfunctional life styles. One thing is for sure: if you start doing them, you'll be a happier person. And from there your life will have depth and meaning.

Obama Gave Chance The Rapper This Career Advice

President Barack Obama gave hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper a bit of career advice during a recent White House event.

In an August interview with GQ magazine, the artist said he joined other celebrities like DJ Khaled, Alicia Keys and Nicki Minaj at the White House in April to discuss the My Brother’s Keeper Initiative and criminal justice reform.

“At the end [of the meeting], everybody takes a group photo, and he’s signing stuff. And he keeps pushing me to the back, and I’m like, ‘I don’t understand why he won’t sign my shit.’ And he makes me wait till the end, and then he brings me up to his office, and we had a really good conversation about what I was working on. He told me I needed to start selling my music,” Chance says.

“He’s a good man. Even if he wasn’t president, if his ass worked at, like, Red Lobster, he’d be just a good man working at Red Lobster,” the Chicago rapper added.

Chance’s third mixtape, “Coloring Book”, was released exclusively on Apple Music this spring and according to him it’s in heavy rotation at the Obama’s residency.

“Oh yeah. They’re bumping ‘Coloring Book’ hard up there. If you go up there, you’ll probably hear ‘Coloring Book.’ This is not a joke at all,” the artist said.

“Malia listens to ‘Coloring Book,’” he added, referencing the president’s oldest daughter. “And I send them stuff sometimes. I haven’t seen Malia since I was a kid. I think [Malia and Sasha] were both in school the day that I went up there recently, but Barack was talking about it. Or, uh, President Obama was talking about it.”

One of Chance’s tracks, “Acid Rain,” is featured on the president’s Spotify summer playlists.

On Tuesday, the 23-year-old rapper took to Twitter to clarify that he will not be at ESPN’s town hall about race relations after a rumor was started that he would be in attendance.

In a series of tweets, Chance wrote about “the responsibility of all media outlets to correctly label all killings by 1st responders as what they are: Murders.”

An Alert, Well-Hydrated Artist in No Acute Distress–Episode Twenty-Six: Why?

A serial about two artists with incurable neurological disease sharing fear, frustration and friendship as they push to complete the most rewarding creative work of their careers.
2016-08-24-1472051006-4926355-EPisode26.jpg
Read Episode Twenty-Five: Chasing Empathy. Or, start at the beginning: An Illness’s Introduction. Find all episodes here.

When trying to make a diagnosis, a doctor is presented with the outcome of a story – the patient’s condition. She or he must bushwhack backward through that patient’s health history, focusing on elements that might be relevant in order to most expediently arrive at the “what” of an illness and a treatment plan. The “why” of it is a critical, but not urgent, piece of the narrative that is chased down by scientists or the curious patient.

It’s impossible for me to think about my friends’ and my own illnesses without wondering what details of our personal histories might point to causes. And, aside from the particulars of each case, I see our diseases as part of a larger narrative about the health of our generation. Or, more precisely, the ill health of our generation. My robust father, who died at 91, two months before my Parkinson’s diagnosis, often commented on the difficulty of growing old and watching friends die. I understood the pain he must have felt, watching the lights go out around him as the shadow of his own inevitable death moved closer. My equally vigorous father-in-law said to me, “You have Parkinson’s and here I am, 88 years old, with nothing ailing me.” He shook his head because it didn’t seem fair to him and because my disease makes him sad. It makes me sad, too. But my sadness has an edge to it because too many of my generation have been stricken with serious illnesses. My friends and family have dealt with five different kinds of cancer, heart disease, stroke, neurological disease, a rare blood disorder, diabetes, fibromyalgia, lupus, psoriatic arthritis and a host of other debilitating autoimmune diseases, all long before the age of 60.

Yet, journalists continue to optimistically present evidence of our longevity: “The median age of cancer death is 72. We live long enough for it to get us.” And, “Cancer mortality is decreasing.” Statements about cancer’s biologic inevitability seem especially heartless considering that many cancer patients won’t live nearly long enough to experience “inevitable.” Similarly misleading is the spin that’s often put on Parkinson’s disease: the reason it seems like more people have Parkinson’s is that we’re better at diagnosing it. My primary care doctor doesn’t buy this. She’s concerned about the increasing number of patients she sees with PD, many of them under 50. “Parkinson’s has clearly been on the rise,” she says.

As we boomers age, TV ads depicting retired folks wallowing in freedom, adventure (and Viagra), seem less and less relevant. Most of us are spending a lot of our free time caring for not only elderly parents, but also our very ill friends or ourselves. Can we bear to ponder why? Maybe not so much. Occasionally when I sing this solemn note, someone will exhale an exasperated, “I know!” But often, people will give me that, “Well hello, sunshine!” look.

Along with rejoicing in our greater longevity, people of my generation often wax nostalgic about the freedoms we had as kids that our own, “overprotected” kids haven’t enjoyed. Indeed, my childhood on the coast of Maine was full of delicious risk-taking. Before I was even ten, my friends and I would skate unsupervised on thin ice (literally), get caught in powerful tidal currents in sailboats, and lose our way in the woods. There were incidents and accidents galore, but they were considered part of life’s big adventure. Even the story my parents often recounted about my running down the hill when I was two and launching myself off our dock into the cove always elicited light-hearted laughter. “That’s why we called her ‘fleet-foot,'” my mother would say. (My grandfather, dressed in a wool tweed suit, had been in the yard and ran down the hill and jumped in to retrieve me.)

We were awash in freedom. Freedom to run wild through our neighborhoods or ride alone on a public bus, to row a boat without a lifejacket, to bike without a helmet, to wrestle and sprawl, unbelted, in the back of the cigarette smoke-choked family station wagon. Freedom to eat Twinkies, Velveeta, Fruit Loops, a smorgasbord of canned and frozen foods miraculously preserved by new chemicals. And that yummy school paste! Blissfully unaware of pollution, we were allowed to wade into anything liquid, bake ourselves jerky-brown on the beach and chase the DDT truck as it spread its cool fog through our fields. We were the aerosol generation; anything that could be sprayed would be sprayed: hair products, deodorant, mosquito repellant, paint…The inexpendable air and endless ocean could surely carry away our insults. The earth’s generous crops fed us well, thanks to powerful pesticides developed after World War Two. Compared to the era of our parents’ childhoods – wedged between two world wars and chastened by The Great Depression – ours was a lucky time to be a kid.

But then a few good earth stewards crashed our reckless party. In 1962, Rachel Carson, in her book The Silent Spring, laid out the impact on the earth and its creatures of widespread use of DDT and other chemicals, kicking off the environmental movement that would lead to the ban, ten years later, of DDT for agricultural use. In 1964, the U.S. Surgeon General released its first report on the dangers of cigarette smoking. (Fun fact: research shows that smokers are less at risk for Parkinson’s.) President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, which wrote and enforced measures passed by Congress designed to protect the environment from human activity. But enforcement came too late for those of us who’d grown up with “better living through chemistry.”

Rarely, members of my Parkinson’s Facebook group will discuss possible causes of their PD. Some point to prolonged exposure to certain chemicals and many others mention the well water they grew up drinking, their proximity to land where pesticides like DDT were used, or their family’s own liberal use of insecticides. Research has shown that drinking well water located within 1/3 mile from crops treated with these chemicals is associated with a 66% – 90% increased risk of PD, and the brains of PD patients have been found to contain higher levels of them than brains from control subjects. Since the ban of DDT, two herbicides, Agent Orange, a defoliant used during the Vietnam War, and paraquat have been tied to Parkinson’s.

One of my most troubling discoveries soon after my diagnosis was that at least some of the organic fruits and vegetables I’d been buying for my family for many years were likely to have been treated with an insecticide shown to cause Parkinson’s in animal models. Because Rotenone is derived from the roots and seeds of tropical plants, it was considered “natural” and has been used ubiquitously in organic farming as well as in flea powder and lice treatment for humans. In 2004, following up on research linking it to PD, the EPA ordered a study to test inhalation neurotoxicity. Rather than submitting to the study, the makers of Rotenone opted to discontinue its use in food growing; in the U.S., it is now used only for piscicide (fish kill). But because the EPA has not banned Rotenone, organic produce treated with it in other countries can be imported by the U.S. and labeled organic.

Scientists know that environmental toxins alone – pesticides, solvents (like those used in dry cleaning), certain metals and tainted well water – can’t be blamed for Parkinson’s disease. Most people who’ve had even long-term exposure to pesticides won’t develop the disease. Rather, a combination of nature and nurture makes a person susceptible to PD, a case in which “genetics loads the gun and environment pulls the trigger.” Parkinson’s is heritable; people who have a family member with the disease have a 4%-10% higher risk of developing it themselves if they carry at least one of several gene mutations associated with PD. LRRK2 is the most common mutation known to cause familial PD and occurs in 1-2% of all people with Parkinson’s. Some with PD carry variants of the gene ABCB1, which restrict ABCB1’s role in helping the brain to flush out toxicants. Studies have demonstrated that the relationship between exposure to pesticides like DDT and Parkinson’s disease is 3.5 times stronger in those carrying the ABCB1 gene variants than in non-carriers.

For the approximately 90% of people with Parkinson’s who, like me, don’t have the gene variants associated with PD, scientists believe there have been more than one cause for neuronal death in our brain’s substantia nigra. For example, in a literal case of adding insult to injury, the risk of Parkinson’s doubles when someone exposed to certain pesticides has previously sustained even a moderate head injury. A blow to the head interrupts the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain, allowing toxins to chronically seep in and destroy dopaminergic neurons. Head trauma also produces an increase in alpha-synuclein, a protein that can become pathogenic and clumps in the brains of people with PD (alpha synuclien plays a major role in PD and will be discussed in a future episode.) Add to the mix LRRK2 or other gene mutations implicated in Parkinson’s, and the risk is even higher.

Before learning about the one-two punch etiology of PD, I had hypothesized that the monstrous mosquito population in Maine and the prophylactic spraying of insecticides, including our family favorite, OFF!, were to blame for my PD. But then I discovered what might be another clue. At the recommendation of a friend, I went to see an osteopath for a nerve irritation in my lumbar spine. After gently manipulating my skeleton from my knees to my skull, the osteopath said, “I’m going to easily get a handle on the problem in your back, but what really concerns me is your head. Have you been in a bad accident?”

I was taken aback. I told him about two serious car accidents I’d been in as an adult, neither of which had caused me harm enough to be seen by a doctor.

“Anything else? A bad fall?” he persisted.

I thought about this. “Well,” I said. “I did fall eighteen feet from a tree when I was about ten.”

“Aha!” he said. “How badly were you hurt? Did you hit your head?”

I pictured the messy grove of sumac trees that grew on the steep, dirt slope next to our house in Maine. My parents had planted them to hide the neighbors’ new concrete ranch house, across the cove. They were tall and spindly, their trunks no more than three or four inches across, their narrow branches brittle. I was a monkey, forever pushing my luck, scrambling from limb to limb. One day when I was high in the trees, the limb I was sitting on broke. The fall was long enough – eighteen feet, we measured later – that I remember reaching out for branches I passed, hoping to interrupt my descent. I landed on my side, winded and stunned. My mother, who was enjoying iced tea in a lawn chair right next to the sumacs, heard the crack and the thud. I don’t remember anything about the time after the fall – my sister thinks she remembers I was knocked out for a bit – but I must have seen a doctor because I recall having to wear some kind of neck collar for a couple of weeks.

The osteopath explained to me that the head and spine are designed for constant movement; in a healthy adult, there’s an inherent rhythmic motion of the cranial bones that changes the shape of the dura mater, a membrane that encloses the brain and spinal cord. He felt that my cranium, and therefore my dura mater, had been immobilized – a condition he would typically find in a patient who’d experienced serious head trauma. My cranial rigidity, combined with hypercontracted spinal muscles caused by long hours at the computer and aggravated by Parkinson’s, he said, could be restricting the flow of blood, lymph and cerebral spinal fluids. By mobilizing my cranial sutures and applying gentle pressure to surrounding tissue, he felt he could release restrictions and restore more normal function.

The osteopath stopped short of suggesting that his finding could be a clue to my PD, and I had read nothing in the Parkinson’s literature that implicated a restricted flow of fluids to and from the brain in the development of the disease. And, because I understood that osteopathy stands to the side of the medical establishment, I didn’t share the osteopath’s ideas with my other doctors. But the connection made a lot of sense to me: my brain cells have been dying at an abnormal rate; couldn’t this be at least in part because they’ve been insufficiently supported by my body’s circulation system? I thought about Hadley, too: could her pulmonary stenosis at birth and her lifetime of extremely low blood pressure have impaired the bloodstream’s transport of oxygen and other nutrients to her brain cells, making them vulnerable to toxicants like the epoxy resin she used while sculpting?

Last year, a year after my first visit to the osteopath, a major discovery was made that strongly supports the idea that an impaired flow of fluids could be a contributing factor to my PD: a network of lymph vessels in the membrane surrounding the brain and spinal cord that connects the brain to the body’s immune system. Until this finding, scientists believed the human body had been thoroughly mapped and that the brain’s and body’s immune systems were separate. It was assumed that the blood-brain barrier largely protected the brain from the full assault of pathogens on the body as well as the immune response they triggered. The discovery that the central nervous system and immune system are connected not only provides new clues about neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) that are known to have an immune component, but also suggests that immune cells also might play a role in Parkinson’s. In PD, incorrectly formed alpha-synuclein proteins collect in the brain and become pathogenic, driving neuronal death. Since the recently identified lymphatic vessels are responsible for clearing away dead cells and other waste, scientists hypothesize that in Parkinson’s, a malfunction in the vessels makes them unable to properly dispose of the neurotoxic proteins.

In 2014, it was discovered that chronic activation of the immune system is the cause of many symptoms of neurodegenerative disease. Initially, our immune system gears up to protect our body from infections, toxins and injury, but if activation is prolonged, it can cause a heightened inflammatory response. In PD, this means that overactive immune cells in the brain attack dopamine neurons that help control the body’s movements. Learning this was an aha! moment for me: In Epsiode Six, I discussed how my integrative medicine doctor had explained my illness in my early 40’s as being caused by an overactive immune system, a diagnosis my primary care physician at the time had a good chuckle over. Looking at the research, it seems more and more likely that he was on target and that the immune activation could have hastened the onset of Parkinson’s. Now, the unearthing of vessels connecting the central nervous system to the immune system will shed light on exactly how the body’s immune response impacts the brain. This carries enormous implications for the future of PD treatments. In the meantime, I will probably continue to have the osteopath work on relieving the tissue and cranial restrictions he’s found, in an effort to ameliorate the lousy janitorial job being done by my newly discovered lymph vessels.

All of us begin life relentlessly asking why? why? why? To be human is to want to know. When I first joined our Parkinson’s Facebook group, I had a powerful desire to pursue the”why” of our shared disease. I imagined collecting data from all our members through an exhaustive survey that would ask about everything: health history, injuries, environment, work habits, emotional life – you name it. We had a ready-made young onset PD study group, I figured; all we had to do was harvest the information. But I soon realized that people who are sick generally are more inclined to look not backward, but forward, at developments that will bring new therapies, or even a cure, while staying as well as they can. I needn’t have worried that our data would go uncollected, though. Since my diagnosis, numerous scientific entities have begun administering online surveys that will inform PD research; I participate in two that are ongoing with the genetics company 23andMe and the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

A patient with a progressive neurological disease who asks “why?” is not likely to significantly change the course of her illness. But as we learn more about new factors that might contribute to the development of neurological conditions, we patients can broaden our approach to living with disease, and healthy people can take more preventative steps. Already, most of us have done what we can to avoid toxins and unhealthful environments. Now that we know that a stressed immune system creates excess inflammation that in turn can precipitate neuronal death, perhaps we will think twice about living a life of multitasking and more seriously pursue activities like sleep, meditation and yoga, which are known to calm the nervous system and relieve the immune system of its hypervigilance. Now that we know our precious brain, once considered “immunologically privileged,” is connected directly to the body’s immune system, perhaps we will be more vigilant about keeping our bodies healthy and treating anxiety and depression, which affect our immunity. The growing publicity about the potentially dire, delayed consequences of head trauma might make us more willing to don a helmet when skiing or riding a bike and less eager to encourage our children to play contact sports. With so many of us struggling with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s – in the U.S. alone, 5.4 million and over 1 million, respectively – it’s time to consider that we didn’t simply get dealt a bad hand (pun intended) and wind up with a devastating, mysterious brain disease.

Our bodies, our brains: they are our houses for life. When they start to fall apart, we don’t get to rip them down and start over. But if we ask enough questions, we can get to know them and care for them, room by messy room.

Birth Control Options for Women Over 40

Many women believe, once they pass 40, that they are no longer fertile. In fact, a woman can get pregnant, intentionally or not, into her late 40s and beyond. And pregnancy after age 40 may carry greater risks. For this reason, contraception until menopause is important for women who are at risk for pregnancy and don’t want to be pregnant.

Because of misconceptions about the health risks of different birth control methods, some health care providers discourage perimenopausal women (those transitioning toward menopause) in their 40s and 50s from using contraceptive methods, such as birth control pills, that they previously relied on in their 20s and 30s. The truth is that a healthy, nonsmoking woman can safely use almost any contraceptive method, including the pill, all the way through menopause.

Many contraceptive methods are available, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main thing to consider (after health issues for women choosing certain contraceptives) is what method you are most motivated to use. By choosing a method that appeals to you, you will be more likely to use it correctly and stick with it.

Forgettable Contraception

When I talk with patients about contraception, I begin by discussing the methods that are most effective, safest, and easiest to use. These are called LARC, for long-acting reversible contraception, or HERC, for highly effective reversible contraception. I also like the term “forgettable contraception” because once you start one of these methods, you can typically forget about it for three or more years.

LARC includes contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs). These are two of the safest birth control methods available. They not only have the lowest failure rates, but are also extremely easy to use, can be used by almost all women, and women tend to like and stick with them. For women in their 40s and 50s, who are often busy with careers, childrearing, and care of elderly parents, IUDs and implants fit well into their busy lifestyles. Moreover, these methods are safe for most women all the way through menopause.

Implants and IUDs are completely reversible and do not require surgical procedures. Because they lack estrogen, they can be used by women who smoke or have a history of blood clots, migraines, or high blood pressure. However, women who have had breast cancer within the past five years should not use methods that contain progestin.

Implants. Placed just beneath the skin of the inner upper arm, an implant is a small, flexible, synthetic rod, about the size of a matchstick. Lasting three years, it releases a small amount of progestin (a synthetic version of the female hormone progesterone) continuously into the bloodstream, like a slow-release capsule. This stops eggs from leaving the ovaries (ovulation), thereby preventing pregnancy.

IUDs. An IUD is a small T-shaped device placed inside the uterus. There, the IUD creates a sterile inflammatory reaction that works like a spermicide to prevent sperm from reaching the egg. Medication in the IUD enhances this contraceptive effect.

There are four types of IUD available in the United States. Three of these release a low dose of the hormone progestin; the progestin dose is low enough that it does not block ovulation, but rather works locally on the uterus and cervix to prevent fertilization. The hormone IUDs are approved for 3 or 5 years of use, depending on the model. Hormone-releasing IUDs decrease menstrual blood flow and cramps, which can be a benefit to perimenopausal women experiencing heavy periods. The other IUD available in the U.S.is a non-hormone IUD containing copper; this IUD lasts 10 years.

Other Hormonal Methods

Other hormonal birth control methods include injections, pills, patches, and vaginal rings, all of which prevent ovulation and are highly effective if used correctly. However, these methods require more attention on the part of the user, and thus are more prone to error.

Injection. Commonly known by the brand name Depo-Provera®, the depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injection is a progestin given every three months. Women using DMPA may experience a decrease in bone mineral density (a measure of fracture risk), which may be a concern for women approaching menopause. However, there is no strong evidence that women using DMPA have more fractures than women who use other contraceptive methods. For this reason, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that the advantages of DMPA outweigh the risks in healthy women even over age 45. Because DMPA contains no estrogen, women who smoke or with health conditions such as a history of blood clots, migraines, or high blood pressure may safely use it.

The pill, patch, and ring. These methods are all just different ways of delivering the hormones estrogen and progestin into the bloodstream, either through the gastrointestinal tract, skin, or vaginal mucosa, respectively. The ring has to be changed monthly, the patch weekly, and the pill taken daily. They are essentially equivalent in terms of health risks. A healthy, nonsmoking woman can safely use these birth control methods all the way through menopause. According to the CDC, however, the risks may outweigh the benefits if you are a smoker or have a medical condition for which estrogen use is contraindicated, such as cardiovascular disease, migraines, or high blood pressure (even if it is well controlled). And any hormone-based method is contraindicated in a woman who has had breast cancer within the last five years.

Barrier Methods

A barrier method can be effective, but takes a high degree of user motivation and, in the case of condoms, male involvement. Condoms are great for preventing sexually transmitted diseases. Many women in their late 40s are in longer-term, committed relationships and don’t want to use a method that requires interrupting the sex act. Other barrier methods include diaphragms and cervical caps, but these are rarely used anymore.

Sterilization

A surgical procedure to permanently prevent pregnancy is an excellent option for women who are certain their family life is complete and need to avoid unintended pregnancy for many more years. But women near menopause must weigh the benefits of sterilization–freedom from worrying about unintended pregnancies and not needing to use other contraceptive methods–against the risks, though minor, of undergoing surgery. Women who need birth control for only a few more years might prefer to use something like an IUD or implant instead.

Additional Health Benefits

Beyond contraception, some birth control methods offer additional health benefits for many women in this age group. For instance, because they contain estrogen, pills, patches, and rings can treat hot flashes, as well as control irregular bleeding. Estrogen can also help increase bone mineral density. And any method that contains progestin lowers the risk of uterine cancer.

It is important for older women who are still at risk for unintended pregnancy to understand that birth control methods they might have thought risky may actually be safe, effective, and beneficial to their overall health. Women will find the best form of birth control to be the one they are motivated to use, whether it is one that requires attention like the pill or patch, or a “set it and forget it” method like an IUD. Choosing the birth control method that suits them best can help perimenopausal women enjoy a healthy, worry-free sex life.

This Election Is More Normal Than It Seems

It has become almost a cliche to note that this election is unlike any other in American history. There has never been a candidate quite like Donald Trump who has broken all the rules of modern campaigning, has offended virtually every religious, racial and ethnic group, as well as women and LGBT people, and who has, in a field where enormous egos are common, perhaps even essential, taken narcissism to a level never before seen in American politics. The historic importance of this campaign is not just due to the bizarre and erratic behavior of the Republican candidate, but also to the Democratic nominee being the first woman ever nominated for President by a major party. Hillary Clinton is poised to become the first woman president in our history. This is a very big deal. However, in some part because of her gender, Clinton, who has run a reasonably smart and disciplined campaign, has remained extremely unpopular. It is only Donald Trump’s historically high negatives that have prevented Hillary Clinton from being the least popular major party nominee in recent history.

Despite all this, one of the most significant, and underreported, aspects of this campaign is how similar it is to most recent presidential elections. While being a woman makes Hillary Clinton different than all of the other candidates the Democratic Party has ever nominated, and her experience makes her more qualified than many recent Democratic nominees, on the issues she fits firmly in the mainstream of her party and does not stand out much from recent previous nominees like Barack Obama, Al Gore, John Kerry or Bill Clinton. She combines a liberal outlook on social issues, and centrist position on many economic issues and positions on foreign policy that reflect bipartisan establishment views. There is nothing very unusual about the Democratic Party nominating a candidate like that.

To suggest that Donald Trump has a cohesive vision or set of policies would be too generous to the real estate and branding dilettante, so it is not so easy to place him in the context of recent Republican nominees or of the GOP more generally. Nonetheless, regardless of the proposals and policies that seem to emerge unexamined and unformed from his mouth, Trump is moving towards a platform that continues the longstanding GOP policy of one-sided class warfare on behalf of the rich, and a resistance to making the US a more equal society for women, non-whites, non-Christians and LGBT people. The Trump campaign has also added a nasty dollop of anti-Semitism to this stew of intolerance that is unusual for today’s GOP.

Most tellingly, the campaign strategies and possible winning coalitions for each of the candidates is almost the same as in every presidential election this century. Clinton is trying to hold together a Democratic coalition of African Americans, Latinos, liberal whites, many of whom are either LGBT or Jewish, and just enough working class white to win. Much has been made of how Donald Trump has been unable to grow his support beyond his party’s white straight Christian base, but to deny that for most of the last twenty or more years the Republican Party has been struggling to win voters who do not fit all of those three categories, is to deny political reality. There have been exceptions, such as George W. Bush’s strong showing among Latinos in 2000, but these have been differences of degree, not of kind. Similarly, this year Clinton has been doing better than most recent Democratic presidential candidates among college educated white women, but will still lose the white vote badly.

Although Trump’s poorly thought out campaign has put states like Georgia in play for the Democratic nominee, the electoral map also will look a lot like it has in recent presidential elections. Trump will sweep most of the south and the heavily white plains states, while Clinton will win most of the mid-Atlantic, northeastern and west coast states. The same states like Colorado, Missouri, Iowa, New Hampshire, Ohio and Florida that have been swing states every year since 2000 will decide the election this year as well.

The desire to portray Donald Trump’s campaign as more of an outlier than it actually is partially grows out of a legitimate bewilderment on the part of the media and others both at Trump’s behavior and at how well he has been doing in this election. However, it is also misleading and understates not the degree of racial polarization in this election, but the degree of racial polarization that has characterized American political life, and partisan politics, for decades now. Trump is a racist who has placed intolerance and bigotry at the center of his campaign in a way that is unique in modern times, but he would not have been able to succeed in this endeavor if the Republican Party had been a more pluralist and diverse institution for the last few decades. Moreover, the similarities between this and previous elections, while perhaps not consistent with more interesting election year narratives, demonstrate the enduring strength of our two party system and how difficult it is, even for a candidate like Trump, to disrupt it.

Why The Humane Society President Changed His Mind About Working With Michael Vick

When NFL star Michael Vick pled guilty to running a dog fighting ring on his property in 2007, he sparked instant and intense outage across the country. Vick’s violence against pit bulls ― he also admitted to killing six to eight dogs by hanging or drowning ― infuriated animal lovers, and one activist who was particularly disgusted was Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle.

As Pacelle told Oprah during an interview for OWN’s “SuperSoul Sunday,” he and the Humane Society were very vocal in their condemnation of Vick’s horrifying acts.

“We demanded his prosecution because what he did to the animals was barbaric. It was despicable,” Pacelle says.

Vick ended up suspended from the NFL and served 19 months in prison. Then, the disgraced athlete reached out to the very people who had written him off the moment his cruelty surfaced publicly.

“One of his people called me just before he was getting out of prison, and they said, ‘Michael would like to work with the Humane Society of the United States on its anti-dog-fighting work,’” Pacelle recalls.

Pacelle, who figured the request was little more than a PR move, said no and hung up the phone. “I thought, ‘OK, this guy wants to do a makeover. He wants to use me for that,’” he says.

But then, Pacelle began to reflect on himself and his mission.

“I said, ‘What am I about at the Humane Society?’ I mean, am I not about changing people for the better? That people who are doing the wrong thing start to move and do the right thing?” he says. “That’s what I do. I’m not just talking to people who are ‘of the faith.’ If I’m doing that, that’s just an echo chamber.”

Pacelle reconsidered Vick’s proposal not just for this reason, but for another powerful benefit as well.

“I also thought, ‘What if Michael Vick put boots on the ground, sort of talking to these kids in communities where they’re getting pit bulls for the wrong reasons … and told them about the evils of dog fighting?’” Pacelle says. “From a campaigner’s perspective, that’s going to allow me to reach tens of thousands of kids that I would not have an audience with.”

Ultimately, Pacelle adds, he hoped that working with Vick would also send a signal to society that would make people become more conscious of their own behaviors regarding animals, whether that’s through their fashion choices or eating habits.

“I’m sending a signal that we’re all sinners when it comes to animals,” he says.

“SuperSoul Sunday” airs Sundays at 11 a.m. ET on OWN.

Another insight from Pacelle:

Humane Society president explains how animals are “our equals in their capacity to suffer”

Want Your Teen To Have A Healthy Weight? Science Says Shut Up

Experts agree that talking about the need to diet and lose weight is one of the most unhealthy, counterproductive things a parent can do for a teen who is struggling with weight issues.

Now, new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics formally endorse those findings. In order to prevent obesity and eating disorders, parents should focus less on diets and the scale and emphasize family togetherness and exercise for fitness, not weight loss.

Obesity in adolescents has quadrupled in the past 30 years; in 2012, 21 percent of young people aged 12 to 19 were obese. Teens who are obese are more likely to have bone or joint problems, as well as sleep apnea. They’re also more likely to develop prediabetes, which can lead to Type 2 diabetes. On top of that, teens who are obese are more likely to grow up to become obese adults who will face heightened risks for diseases including cancer and stroke.

In the midst of this obesity epidemic, eating disorders in children and teens have become a major medical problem. In 2012, eating disorders caused more than 90 percent of all hospitalizations for children aged 10 to 17 years old, according to data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). The AAP report was compiled, in part, over growing concern about the unhealthy way teens are trying to lose weight.

Here are six takeaways from the report, published in the journal Pediatrics. These recommendations are for both doctors and parents, and they apply to all teens — not just those with weight problems.

What not to do:

Never encourage dieting.

Dieting packs a double whammy because it’s a risk factor for both obesity and eating disorders. Girls who weren’t obese but dieted in the ninth grade were three times were likely to be overweight by 12th grade, compared to girls who didn’t diet. And young people who severely reduced their caloric intake and skipped meals were 18 times more likely to develop an eating disorder than those who didn’t diet. Even just moderate dieting increased a teen’s risk of developing an eating disorder fivefold

”A 3-year-old may not be worried if she’s a bit overweight, whereas an adolescent may try unhealthy weight-loss methods like fasting or diet pills and end up in a vicious circle of more weight gain,” explained lead author Dr. Neville Golden, a pediatrics professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, in a statement.

Don’t comment on your child’s weight, or even your weight.

What you say matters; teens who talk about weight with their parents are also more likely to diet, binge eat and have unhealthy weight control behaviors, but this risk lessens if the subject matter is about healthy eating behaviors.

No matter how well-intentioned or seemingly benign you think your comments are, studies show that comments parents make about either their own weight or their child’s weight is linked to a child’s risk of being overweight and developing an eating disorder.

It’s important to note here that a teen doesn’t have to look excessively thin for a parent to be concerned that they might have an eating disorder, said Golden.

“This is a dangerous category of patient, because they’re often missed by physicians,” he said. “At some point, these patients may have had a real need to lose weight, but things got out of control.”

Never tease teens about their weight.

This seems obvious, but bears repeating since a significant minority of overweight teens say they’ve experienced weight-related teasing from friends or family members. Cruel taunts about weight increase a child’s risk of both being overweight and developing eating disorders, and the pain can last into adulthood.

Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, a researcher who focuses on teen health and nutrition, previously told HuffPost that parents should make their homes a sanctuary where kids feel safe from weight-related teasing.

“Our children need to know that they can tell us what happened without receiving advice on how to lose weight,” she said.

What to do instead:

Eat together.

While eating meals together as a family has not been shown to reduce obesity rates, it does improve the nutritional content of a child’s diet and it allows parents to model healthy eating behaviors in front of their children, the report said. One study found that families who eat meals together seven or more times per week eat more fruits and vegetables compared to families who never eat together, and for the kids, this increased intake of fruits and veggies persisted into young adulthood. Another study found that eating family dinners most days during the previous years seemed to protect kids from binge eating, dieting and purging behaviors

Focus on a balanced diet and exercise ― not weight loss.

Encourage healthy body image by encouraging kids to eat healthfully and exercise for fitness ― not for weight loss. Teens who have these positive influences are more likely to report being happy with their bodies and less likely to say they had weight-related concerns. Kids who are dissatisfied with their bodies, on the other hand, are more likely to develop eating disorders, diet and have lower levels of physical activity.

Create a healthy home environment.

While it may seem from the AAP recommendations that a parent is more hemmed in about what they should or shouldn’t say to encourage a healthy lifestyle in children, the truth is that what a parent does says volumes about the best way to approach eating, exercise and body image.

The report says that parents can create a healthy food environment at home by buying and serving fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and water, while keeping artificial sweeteners, sugar-sweetened drinks and refined carbs away. Parents can also encourage physical activity by keeping TVs out of children’s bedrooms. Indeed, health interventions for both obesity and eating disorders are most effective when the whole family is involved in the treatment — not just the child who needs help.

Does Cooking Matter?

Does Cooking Matter?

What do we actually cook? And how do we make decisions about what to cook and eat when surrounded by overwhelming messages in the media? Here writer and social researcher Rebecca Huntley attempts to answer these questions, and to show that the ‘cooking’ that’s presented in food media (like MasterChef) is less valuable than ‘food wisdom’: understanding how to prepare food on a daily basis.

Trump and Clinton Could Do More to Ease Electorate’s Fears about Nuclear Weapons

2016-08-22-1471883144-6883676-The_explosion_of_the_hydrogen_bomb_Ivy_Mike1.jpg

We have a lot to fear from a Donald Trump presidency. Like whether he can be trusted with the nuclear codes. As the New York Times pointed out recently, it is not totally clear where Trump stands on using nuclear weapons. In one interview, he said they’d be a last resort. In another, he hinted that he’d consider using them in a first strike against the Islamic State and wouldn’t rule out using them in Europe.

One thing is clear: Trump has very little understanding of the issue. He has both allegedly and publicly questioned why, since we have them, we cannot use them. He could not answer a simple question about how he would prioritize America’s nuclear arsenal as President.

Members of his own party are concerned. Fifty Republican national security professionals argued in a letter that Trump’s unwillingness or inability to separate “truth from falsehood,” lack of “self-control,” impetuousness, and “erratic behavior” are “dangerous qualities in an individual who aspires to be President and Commander-in-Chief, with command of the U.S. nuclear arsenal.” Sitting Republican Senators have stayed mum about their trust in his fitness to handle U.S nuclear weapons.

A recent YouGov/HuffingtonPost poll finds that it isn’t just former government officials or his opponents who are asking questions. The public doesn’t trust Trump to handle nuclear weapons. That being said, the same poll finds that while Americans trust Hillary Clinton with nuclear weapons more than they do Trump, most still don’t trust her with them either. This begs the question: what, if anything, would increase the public’s confidence on this matter?

An LA Times story highlights that, thanks to their worries about Trump, Americans have woken up to the reality of the U.S. nuclear arsenal in way they haven’t since the end of the Cold War. His candidacy has shed light on the fact that the President has sole authority to launch nuclear weapons, with almost nothing standing in his way.

Both candidates could make one simple pledge that would be a first step in easing the public’s fear: a pledge of no-first-use.

More than two decades after the end of the Cold War, the United States still explicitly reserves the right to use a nuclear weapon first on another country. Of course, it is the only country to have done so.

In the Cold War, the United States believed it needed to threaten use of nuclear weapons to counterbalance the threat of attack by a massive Soviet conventional force. That threat is long gone and there is no reasonable scenario in which Russian conventional military steps would require a U.S. nuclear response. Even during the Cold War, the logic of first-use was questionable. China has long had a policy of no-first-use even though its adversaries have had conventional military superiority.

In today’s landscape, it is perfectly logical for the United States to declare a policy of no-first-use. The United States does not benefit from leaving open the possibility of first-use. If there is any value in nuclear weapons, this is it: they deter an attack by other countries with nuclear weapons. A no-first-use pledge does nothing to change this calculation.

Moreover, taking first-use off the table has several benefits. It would lower the risk of use by accident, miscalculation, or escalation. It may also challenge other nuclear weapons-possessing states to make this pledge, lowering the risk even further. It would also allow the United States to get rid of “first strike” weapons — such as a new nuclear-armed cruise missile – saving taxpayers tens of billions of dollars. A recent op-ed by General James Cartwright and Bruce Blair argues that the policy would allow the U.S. to get rid of our land-based ballistic missiles – saving $ 100 billion in the process.

The masses have been reawakened to the threats that stem from nuclear weapons. Little did they know, many of our dangerous policies haven’t changed much in several decades. Both Clinton and Trump should make a common-sense policy pledge of no-first-use of nuclear weapons. Not only would it lower the risk of nuclear use, it might also gain some of the public’s trust.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Will We Ever Really Know Ourselves?

When the ancient Greeks first uttered the dictum “Know thyself,” they had another choice. They could have said “Know lots of other things.” In one direction the investigation goes inward; in the opposite direction the investigation goes outward. “Know thyself” stands for something that, as far as we know, only human beings possess: self-awareness. “Know lots of other things” also points to a unique human capacity: curiosity about the outside world. I think it’s unarguable that the investigation of the outside world, as pursued by science, has gotten much, much further than self-awareness. Scientists have probed Nature in every dimension, while self-awareness hasn’t even stopped humanity from the impulse to destroy itself.

The gap between “Know thyself” and “Know Lots of other things” was sharply drawn by a current post from the back-page editor of Scientific American, Michael Shermer.  Reading his piece, “At the Boundary of Knowledge,” one comes away with a sense that science is totally triumphant. Not only has science achieved huge successes in acquiring facts and data that led to the overwhelming dominance of technology in the world. It has done something much more difficult. Quoting a recent book, The Big Picture, by Sean Carroll, a physicist from the California Institute of Technology, Shermer claims that now we can be almost certain about how all knowledge is attained. “All of the things you’ve ever seen or experienced in your life — objects, plants, animals, people — are made of a small number of particles, interacting with one another through a small number of forces.”

From this position, which we can call hardline materialism, Shermer reaches the following conclusion: “Once you understand the fundamental laws of nature, you can scale up to planets and people and even assess the probability that God, the soul, the afterlife and ESP exist, which Carroll concludes is very low.” I haven’t read Prof. Carroll’s book, but you can see Shermer, and many of his readers, dusting off their hands with a satisfied sense of “Well, that’s that.” If they are right, science has eliminated the need for “Know thyself” simply by swallowing up the whole issue of self-awareness and packing it away with particles and forces, having scaled up to planets and peoples, God and the soul.

Or there is another possibility, eloquently expressed by great pioneers of quantum physics around a century ago. Max Planck, who named the quantum, wrote, “All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the matrix of all matter.” Werner Heisenberg doubled down on that assertion: “The atoms or elementary particles themselves are not real; they form a world of potentialities or possibilities rather than one of things or facts.”

These insights about the mind as a primary force in Nature sound either strange, absurd, imaginary, or metaphysical to anyone pursuing the “Know lots of other things” project that gave rise to science. But they make perfect sense to the “Know thyself” project. It’s obvious on the face of it that no matter how finely you break a piano down into molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, the facts you gain say nothing about how music is composed, nor can you get there by dissecting Mozart’s brain, which is nothing but a conglomerate of ordinary molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles, also.

In fact, there are scientists who understand the distinction and are trying to resolve it. A growing cadre of investigators has opened the door to a once-forbidden subject, consciousness.  The gist of Shermer’s article is to debunk the existence of paranormal phenomena, a very large category into which he tosses God, the soul, witchcraft, and all manner of superstitions. But such attacks from the stance of scientific atheism are premature. Until we understand how consciousness comes about, both normal and paranormal events are equally mysterious. Two observers, one claiming to see angels, the other to see nebulae and galaxies, derive their experience from totally unknown processes by which the dark, silent, mushy environment of the brain, using completely ordinary electrochemical activity, produces a three-dimensional world.

Maintaining that physics disproves, or reduces to the vanishing point, the very possibility of paranormal phenomena, Shermer’s once-over-lightly of “the horizon where the known meets the unknown” misses the main chance. Instead of beating the dead horse of scientific atheism Shermer should have considered a far more amazing current trend.

I mean the trend that places so-called supernatural phenomena on the same playing field as natural events. Consciousness is the field of all experience including the knowing of experience. This is the only irrefutable fact anyone has to work with. The inside scoop in physics and biology is that a crisis of knowledge has developed when attempting to account for the fundamental definitions of time, space, matter, energy, and life. In a cosmos ruled by dark matter and energy, where no empirical evidence exists about the origin of time, where the multiverse is pure conjecture and no one has the slightest idea how the constants that emerged from the Big Bang created the perfect scenario for life on Earth, Shermer’s brand of stubborn physicalism is not just wheezy — it’s not true to the current situation in science.

It’s time for Shermer to go back to the future and read these seminal physicists like Planck, Heisenberg, and Schrödinger, so that instead of relying upon a primitive belief that all phenomena come down to the interaction of particles, he gets into the game when it’s finally becoming interesting. “Know thyself” may be at a low point compared to ancient Greece, but it’s getting ready for a comeback that promises to change everything.

Rudy Giuliani Claims Online Videos Show Hillary Clinton Is Mentally Ill

Donald Trump campaign adviser and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani asserted that online videos exist that raise serious questions about Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s mental health.

In an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” Giuliani blamed the news media for failing to give attention to supposedly valid questions about Clinton’s psychological fitness.

Asked to explain Clinton’s lead over Trump in the polls, Giuliani argued that she has “an entire media empire” devoted to attacking Trump and ignoring her own foibles.

The media, he claimed, “fails to point out several signs of illness by her. All you’ve got to do is go online.”

Pressed for evidence of this illness by host Shannon Bream, Giuliani doubled down on unnamed internet sources.

“Go online and put down ‘Hillary Clinton illness,’ take a look at the videos for yourself,” he insisted.

In fact, there is no evidence to suggest that Clinton is psychologically unhealthy. Fake medical records circulating online claim a concussion Clinton sustained in December 2012 resulted in lasting brain damage. Clinton’s physician, Lisa Bardack, reaffirmed in an Aug. 16 note that Clinton is in “excellent health.”

Clinton campaign press secretary Brian Fallon responded to Giuliani on Twitter with a reference to Giuliani’s battle with prostate cancer that led him to drop out of the New York Senate race against Clinton in 2000.

Of course, absence of proof notwithstanding, Giuliani was only amplifying a similar smear Trump made on the campaign trail. The GOP nominee questioned Clinton’s “mental and physical stamina” in a speech on Monday.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Angels and Molecules

The other day my wife, Ana, and I went out for a few hours. When we came back, we parked the car, entered through the downstairs garage door, came up to the first floor and into the living room. Where we saw our intrepid dog Ben, standing on the back of the living room couch, gazing out the window. Waiting.

To explain: Ana is the center of Ben’s universe, the sun around which all his planets revolve. She is his oxygen, his A to Z, his why the universe exists. He was waiting for her.

But Ben has gone deaf. He had somehow missed seeing the car’s approach, and hadn’t heard it come down the drive, or the motorized grind of the garage door opening, or our footsteps up the stairs. As far as he knew, we were still gone.

2016-08-19-1471640868-7835203-Ben2.jpg

Moments after I snapped this picture, I clapped, loud enough for him to hear, and he turned his head and saw Ana — and his little dog face broke into an ecstatic OMG, why didn’t someone tell me?! and all was right with the world.

It made me think of Beethoven.

Late in life, Beethoven was attending the premier of his ninth (and final) symphony. “Attending” is perhaps not the right word. Although he was by this time deaf as a board, he strongly felt he should be on hand to guide the musicians along in this huge and enormously challenging composition, so he stood right up there on stage, by the conductor, and gestured like crazy throughout the performance, doing his utmost to shape the right tempi and dynamics and phrasing — even though he could not hear a note.

After the last chord was sounded, the composer stood on the stage, breathing heavily, facing the orchestra. The audience, who had never heard anything like this before (nor, for that matter, had anyone on the planet), erupted into raucous, deafening applause.

The composer was oblivious. He had no idea anyone was even clapping. The mezzo-soprano soloist had to approach him (with tears in her eyes, and can you blame her?) and tug on his arm to get him to turn around and see the thunderous response his music has evoked.

This got me thinking:

What if we’re all like Ben and Beethoven?

What if we are surrounded by all the applause, but just don’t hear it? If the center of our universe, the thing we love most, has already arrived and is standing there watching us, but we just don’t know it yet?

I remember as a teenager, taking a walk one morning in my neighborhood, going blocks and blocks in my quiet suburban town, a Sunday, hardly anyone about. I’d been reading about physics and metaphysics and different thinkers’ understandings of how reality was assembled. I remember stopping, standing, and gazing out along a path down to a field.

It suddenly hit me that I was surrounded by billions, trillions, quadrillions of molecules, atoms, particles, all buzzing and humming and soaring in orbits around each other, vibrating like mad. I was a musician and student of acoustics, and I knew this basic fact of life: vibration makes noise. I was standing in the midst of the most colossal symphony imaginable. I just couldn’t hear it.

Although for those few moments, it felt as if I almost did.

There is an ancient tradition in Bali which holds that a gamelan orchestra, that most mesmerizing of human musical ensembles, doesn’t “make” its music. No, say the Balinese, that rippling stream of rhythm and melody is already happening, already going on, all around us, all the time. The job of the gamelan musicians is not to create the music, but simply to catch it, like a crystal set picking up radio waves and stepping them down to audible form.

What if we are surrounded by symphonies?

What if our ancestors, departed parents, and all those loved ones who have shuffled off before us are in fact standing right beside us, beaming with pleasure at our antics, cheering us on?

What if throngs of angels are stomping and hooting and laughing and shouting, exuberant as a sold-out Bruce Springsteen auditorium just to be there watching us, applauding our every mundane move like a chorus of thunderclaps?

You know, I think they may be.

You can almost hear them, can’t you?

These Underwater Yoga Photos Prove The Practice Is Truly Magical

Looking for a reason to hit the yoga mat today? Take a gander at these stunning photos.

The surreal images, which were snapped by photographer Elena Kalis, feature yoga instructor Britta Jade as she masterfully executes yoga poses under water. They’re a truly majestic display of how yoga can be both athletic and a work of art.

The photos are an inspirational reminder that the practice can be one of the best ways to move your body. Research shows yoga can reduce stress and lower your risk for heart disease. It also can improve your sleep and boost your brain function. Not to mention the fact that yoga can be an excellent form of strength training, which can help maintain a healthy weight.

While not everyone can exactly run off to the crystal shores of a remote island to nail these moves, there are some added perks to taking your yoga practice to the water. Studies suggest being near the ocean can make you calmer and more creative. The sea also puts your brain in a more meditative state.

If you’ve been slacking on a yoga routine (or hesitant to try one at all), take a look at the pictures below. Then check out these healthy reasons to prioritize the practice for additional motivation.

Nirvana: achieved.

Corey Lewandowski Doesn’t Seem To Get That John Kerry Lost The 2004 Election

After the chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign resigned on Friday, former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski tried to insist Trump’s bid for the White House was going just fine.

Lewandowski, who was fired by Trump in June, drew a puzzling parallel to make his point, arguing that in 2004, John Kerry was also making staff changes as the election approached.

“This campaign is not the first campaign to make staff changes. If you look at John Kerry’s campaign, when he was running, he was making changes as late as Labor Day, and don’t forget we’re still in August,” Lewandowski said on CNN, where he is a paid commentator.

The remark prompted host Kate Bolduan to point out the obvious: Kerry lost the race for the White House in 2004 to George W. Bush.

Nonetheless, Lewandowski insisted that last-minute changes could still be good.

“Well, I understand, but the change in 2004 that John Kerry made helped him actually do significantly better than what he was doing,” he said.

Lewandowski, who reportedly clashed with Paul Manafort, Trump’s since-departed campaign chairman, when the two worked together, said it was clear Trump was unhappy with the direction in which Manafort was leading the campaign. The new campaign leadership, Lewandowski said, would allow Trump to be more “authentic.”

“Sometimes you have to bring different perspectives in. Sometimes, you have to change things, particularly, in a campaign that, in the last three or four weeks has missed, in my opinion, opportunities to go after Hillary Clinton for the failures of her campaign and to point out those failures. I don’t think they’ve done a good job on that,” he said.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Crazy Busy? How Much Would You Pay For An Hour Of Calm?

“What I wouldn’t give for a moment of peace and calm.” This was the thought I had a few days ago on a particularly hectic day running errands, running my business, and parenting my four-and-a-half month old. Work and life pressures are intense for all of us today, and we have become a culture that is “addicted to busy.”

As you reflect on your life for a moment, how much would you pay to avoid feeling embarrassed at work, or to avoid feeling guilty for missing your daughter’s recital for an out-of-town business meeting? How much is that hour of calm worth to you? The value of experiencing positive emotions and avoiding negative ones was recently explored in a study where researchers created a value-based ranking of emotions using a willingness to pay approach.

Your balance of positive and negative emotions is an important influence on your subjective well-being – the way you think and feel about life. But is it better for well-being to pursue positive emotions or avoid negative ones? According to a series of studies across cultures, the results are mixed. One study of college students across 40 countries showed that positive emotions were a stronger influence on well-being than negative emotions. In some cultures, each negative event had nearly twice the impact on well-being as each positive event. Other studies show that positive and negative emotions had roughly the same impact on well-being.

More interestingly, researchers wondered what people would do to achieve their most desired emotions – would they be willing to spend time, effort and even money to pursue or avoid those emotions? To answer that question, researchers developed a value-based ranking of different emotions by having people assign hypothetical values to them. Study participants (in two separate studies across two different cultures) were asked to state the amount they would pay to experience a range of positive emotions and avoid certain negative emotions. They allocated a value after being asked the following question: “Think of a specific time in your life you were very ______ (insert the emotion). How much would you be willing to pay to re-create (or avoid) this feeling for one hour?”

Here is how the research subjects spent their dollars*:

** $ 44.30 to experience calm

** $ 79.07 to experience happiness

** $ 92.81 to avoid sadness

** $ 99.82 to avoid embarrassment

** $ 106.27 to avoid regret

Only one emotion was more valuable than avoiding regret, and that was love. Love was worth $ 113.56 to these folks. While human beings may spend a lot of time and energy (and hypothetical dollars) avoiding negative emotions, it appears that bottom line, we just want to feel loved. Love was also the most valuable emotion cited in the first study as well.

I think it would be interesting to extend these studies beyond cultural comparisons to look at differences among generations and even life stages. When I was a young lawyer, I could have cared less about calm because I was driven to work lots of hours and make my mark. Today, I would pay much more. I would guess that no matter how old you are, you would pay a great deal to avoid regret.

So, how would you allocate your emotional dollars?

The Secret To Becoming Unbearably Attractive

This post was originally published on Techealthiest as part of Healthy Narcissism Month.

People obsess way too much about the physical changes needed to become more attractive to others.

I’m not saying that eating right and exercising aren’t important. It’s just that there are other minor changes that can be made to drastically increase your desirability and your chances of finding love.

If you want to attract someone who is only going to focus on your looks as the primary reason for being with you, then ignore my advice.

But if you’re seeking someone who has his or her head on straight and values what really matters in life over time (essentially qualities of the ultimate life partner), then check this out. In fact, for people who naturally follow the formula below, there’s nothing secret about it. They will instantly recognize your attractive qualities and gravitate toward you. The rest is up to you…

Here’s a HIP Formula for Amplifying Attractiveness, which will skyrocket how desirable you’ll appear to others:

Humility (maintaining a nonjudgmental attitude) + Integrity (being your word) + Passion (sharing your commitment to doing what you love) = a magnetic force that pulls people toward you.

1) H is for Humility.

The positive correlation between humility and physical attraction has been grossly underemphasized. There’s nothing more impressive, enthralling and comforting than someone who makes you feel valued and accepted. Be that person who seems to understand what really matters in life. Make people feel heard and listened to with such fine attention that they don’t know what to do with themselves. Show how powerful you are by disarming people when you demonstrate how you avoid judging people. Let them here you say, “Who am I to judge?

The most nonjudgmental people are also the most desirable if you can see beyond superficial appearances.

Avoid boasting about your accomplishments, the celebrities you’ve met or the great job perks you have (unless you’re sharing your passion for your job). One great way to show humility is to allow the focus of the conversation to remain on the other person even when there are perfect opportunities to brag, but don’t seem like you’re dodging questions about yourself. Let a potential partner slowly discover your greatness.

2) I is for Integrity.

Integrity is something that tends to draw immense admiration from others. It makes you memorable and reliable in an attractive way. Integrity will make you stand out as a star among untrustworthy people, especially in a digital age of ghosting and flakiness as the norm. Be your word to people and they will respect you and want more of you. When you make a commitment to getting together, don’t cancel your plans. If you point out a value, moral, or personality characteristic that you believe in, then be a living example of someone who strives to be what you say matters most to you.

3) P is for Passion.

Most importantly, in the spirit of making yourself wildly sexy to others, exude passion for what you enjoy doing. Passion makes you seem powerful, ambitious and exciting to be around. When people get a sense of how pumped you are about the things you love to do, it pulls them toward you. If you’re not passionate about work, then share your passion for your hobbies and interests. If you don’t have hobbies and interests that get you excited about, then commit to searching for your passions through trial and error and don’t be afraid to talk about the hunt.

People who undervalue these three character traits as a way to increase their desirability are likely to overvalue physical attractiveness and money.

What if you’re reading this and thinking to yourself that these qualities don’t turn you on so much?

That’s totally fine, but know that you probably don’t realize the behind-the-scenes impact that the expression of these traits has on your desirability.

I’ll also add that people who consciously value these traits in a romantic partner are most likely happier people than those who haven’t really thought about H or I or P.

Essentially, the HIP Formula is a tasty recipe for raising your baseline level of happiness.

In truth, this formula is much more effective for attracting a long-term partner as opposed to someone to date casually.

By the way, I’m a strong believer in the fake-it-till-you-make-it approach as long as you understand going into it that your commitment to displaying these qualities doesn’t end when you’ve achieved the desired results. It’s life-long.

Take pride in this commitment. It feels so fulfilling to experience yourself as successfully avoiding judgment, keeping your word or exuding passion

Mark my words… over time you’ll reap the mental health benefits of using them as guiding philosophy, and, in the process, you’ll seem super attractive to people even when you yourself don’t feel like a model of sexiness, which is probably quite often for most of us.

Good luck and please do share your thoughts and experiences.
